Azure Stack updates and how it enables intelligence at the edge
Today, more than ever before, it is essential that our colleagues, customers, and partners be able to react quickly and confidently to rapidly changing circumstances. The ability to ingest, analyze, and act on incoming information requires that an organization have a robust, scalable technology infrastructure. Such an infrastructure is not limited to one place or one platform. Modernized, and cloud-native applications can span across on-premises, multi-cloud, and edge environments.
Azure Stack IaaS - part ten
This blog is co-authored by Andrew Westgarth, Senior Program Manager, Azure Stack Journey to PaaS One of the best things about running your VMs in Azure or Azure Stack is you can begin to modernize around your virtual machines (VMs) by taking advantage of the services provided by the cloud. Platform as a Service (PaaS) is the term often applied to the capabilities that are available to your application to use without the burden of building and maintaining these capabilities yourself.
Virtual machine memory allocation and placement on Azure Stack
Customers have been using Azure Stack in a number of different ways. We continue to see Azure Stack used in connected and disconnected scenarios, as a platform for building applications to deploy both on-premises as well as in Azure. Many customers want to just migrate existing applications over to Azure Stack as a starting point for their hybrid or edge journey.

Azure Stack IaaS - part nine
This blog was co-authored by Aparna Vishwanathan, Senior Program Manager, Azure Stack and Tiberiu Radu, Senior Program Manager, Azure Stack. Build on the success of others Before we built Azure Stack, our program manager team called a lot of customers who were struggling to create a private cloud out of their virtualization infrastructure.
Azure Stack IaaS - part eight
If you do it often, automate it In the virtualization days, before cloud and self-service, it took a while to get all the approvals, credentials, virtual LANs (VLANs), logical unit numbers (LUNs), etc. It took so long, that the actual creation part was easy. When cloud came along with self-service, not only was it easier to create a virtual machine (VM) without relying on others, but it changed our thinking about whether VMs were precious or disposable.
Azure Stack IaaS - part seven
It takes a team Most apps get delivered by a team. When your team delivers the app through virtual machine (VMs), it is important to coordinate efforts. Born in the cloud to serve teams from all over the world, Azure and Azure Stack have some handy capabilities to help you coordinate VM operations across your team. Identity and single sign-on The easiest identity to remember is the one you use every day to sign in to your corporate network and check your email.
Azure Stack IaaS - part six
Pay for what you use In the virtualization days I used to pad all my requests for virtual machines (VM) to get the largest size possible. Since decisions and requests took time, I would ask for more than I required just so I wouldn’t have delays if I needed more capacity. This resulted in a lot of waste and a term I heard often–VM sprawl. The behavior is different with Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) VMs in the cloud.
Azure Stack IaaS - part five
Self-service is core to Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). Back in the virtualization days, you had to wait for someone to create a VLAN for you, carve out a LUN, and find space on a host. If Microsoft Azure ran that way, we would have needed to hire more and more admins as our cloud business grew. Do it yourself A different approach was required, which is why IaaS is important.
NEW TUTORIAL: Deploy apps to Azure and Azure Stack

Automatically deploy your app to global Azure for user acceptance testing.
Azure Stack IaaS - part three
This blog post was co-authored by David Armour Principal PM Manager, Azure Stack and Tiberiu Radu, Senior Program Manager, Azure Stack. Foundation of Azure Stack IaaS Remember back in the virtualization days when you had to pick a host for your virtual machine? Some of my business units could tell by the naming convention the make and manufacturer of the hardware. Using this knowledge, they’d fill up the better gear first, leaving the teams that didn’t know better with the oldest hosts.
Azure Stack laaS - part two
This blog post was co-authored by David Armour, Principal Program Manager, Azure Stack. Start with what you already have Every organization has a unique journey to the cloud. This journey is based on the organization’s history, business specifics, culture, and maybe most importantly, their starting point.
Azure Stack IaaS - part one
This blog post was co-authored by Daniel Savage, Principal Program Manager, Azure Stack and Tiberiu Radu, Senior Program Manager, Azure Stack. Azure Stack at its core is an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform When we discuss Azure Stack with our customers, they see the value in Azure Stack providing cloud-native capabilities to their datacenters.
The year in review: Hybrid applications for developers
As 2018 comes to an end, I look at the technology landscape. I look at the kinds of hybrid scenarios our customers are developing. For example, we see Airbus transforming aerospace with Microsoft Azure Stack and I realize that this year has been amazing for developers that design, develop, and maintain cloud-based apps. Azure Stack has improved support for DevOps practices. You can use Kubernetes containers. You can use API Profiles with Azure Resource Manager and the code of your choice.
A hybrid approach to Kubernetes
We’re excited to see everyone at Kubecon this week! We’ve been working with our customers to understand how they’re thinking about Kubernetes and what we can do to make it easier for them. Azure Stack unleashes new hybrid capabilities for developing applications. You design, develop, and maintain your applications just like you do with Azure and you can deploy to any of the Azure clouds. Your application’s location becomes a configuration parameter rather than a design constraint.
What you need to know when writing hybrid applications
As of today, Azure is present in 54 regions, several sovereign clouds, as well as in our customers’ data centers through Azure Stack. Consistency is a fundamental pillar of Azure, no matter which region you are deploying your application to, the way you write your scripts and templates is the same. Consistency is great because it allows you to reuse knowledge and artifacts.

This capability further enhances security and simplifies network integration for Azure Stack. We are proud to share that Extension Host will be enabled by the next Azure Stack update, 1811.
Microsoft and Intel donate Azure Hardware, AI Services to Advance Intelligent Edge Research at Carnegie Mellon University
Edge computing is one of the greatest trends that is not only transforming the cloud market, but creating new opportunities for business and society. At its core, edge computing is about harnessing compute on a device, closest to where insights need to be realized – on a connected car, a piece of machinery, or a remote oil field, for example – so these insights come without delay and with a high-degree of accuracy.
Developing hybrid applications with Azure Stack
More and more we hear from our customers that building hybrid applications is necessary for their business. While Microsoft Azure continues to be the platform of choice for building applications, Azure Stack and Azure together enable building hybrid applications. The consistent experience across both makes it easy.
The importance of Azure Stack for DevOps
This blog post was co-authored by Steve Buchanan, Cloud & Datacenter MVP. DevOps focuses on aligning culture, people, processes, and technology. It is sometimes thought that the technology part does not play a critical role in DevOps. This is wrong! Tools and technology help facilitate DevOps methodology and processes. Having the wrong tools and technology when trying to roll out DevOps can make it a challenge and can even become a blocker.
