Abstract Indirect Drive Inertial Confinement Fusion Experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have achieved a burning plasma state with neutron yields exceeding 170 kJ, roughly 3 times the prior record and a necessary stage for igniting plasmas. The results are achieved despite multiple sources of degradations that lead to high variability in performance.
Abstract The gravitational pressure in many astrophysical objects exceeds one gigabar (one billion atmospheres)1,2,3, creating extreme conditions where the distance between nuclei approaches the size of the K shell. This close proximity modifies these tightly bound states and, above a certain pressure, drives them into a delocalized state4. Both processes substantially affect the equation of state and radiation transport and, therefore, the structure and evolution of these objects.
IV. SIMULATED RADIOGRAPHY SIGNAL Synthetic radiography images (see Fig. 7 and the appendix for more details) show a clear limb feature at the boundary of the central hydrogen and the beryllium layer. Applying mass conservation, this feature will be used as constraint for the density of the encapsulated hydrogen at smaller radii as the total initial fuel mass can be accurately characterized.
COVID-19 has impacted many institutions and organizations around the world, disrupting the progress of research. Through this difficult time APS and the Physical Review editorial office are fully equipped and actively working to support researchers by continuing to carry out all editorial and peer-review functions and publish research in the journals as well as minimizing disruption to journal access.
