Efficacy and safety of etrasimod in alopecia areata: A multicentre, randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, Phase 2 study
Why was the study undertaken? Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by nonscarring hair loss of the scalp, face, and/or body. While treatments are available for severe AA, there remains a need for additional therapies for patients with less extensive and moderate disease. Etrasimod, an oral, selective sphingosine 1-phosphate 1, 4 and 5 receptor modulator, is in development for immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, including AA. What does this study add?
Fundamental constants from photon-photon scattering in three-beam collisions
Direct measurement of the elastic scattering of real photons on an electromagnetic field would allow the fundamental low-energy constants of quantum electrodynamics to be experimentally determined. We show that scenarios involving the collision of three laser beams have several advantages over conventional two-beam scenarios.
Feasibility of measuring nonanalytic QED coupling from pair creation in strong fields
In the quasistatic regimes of nonlinear Breit-Wheeler and trident pair creation, the rates can exhibit a nonanalytic dependency on the fundamental coupling of quantum electrodynamics, in a form similar to Schwinger vacuum pair creation. To reach this tunneling regime requires satisfying competing requirements: a high-intensity but low quantum strong-field parameter with sufficient pair creation to be observed.
Locally monochromatic two-step nonlinear trident process in a plane wave
Abstract In many-cycle plane waves at intermediate intensities, the nonlinear trident process can be well approximated by the two sequential steps of nonlinear Compton scattering of a polarized real photon followed by its transformation into an electron-positron pair via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair creation. We investigate this two-step process in the intermediate intensity regime by employing the locally monochromatic approximation for each step and numerically evaluating resulting expressions.
Generation of Nonclassical Motional States of a Trapped Atom
We report the creation of thermal, Fock, coherent, and squeezed states of motion of a harmonically bound 9Be+ ion. The last three states are coherently prepared from an ion which has been initially laser cooled to the zero point of motion. The ion is trapped in the regime where the coupling between its motional and internal states, due to applied (classical) radiation, can be described by a Jaynes-Cummings-type interaction.
Demonstration of a Fundamental Quantum Logic Gate
We demonstrate the operation of a two-bit "controlled-NOT" quantum logic gate, which, in conjunction with simple single-bit operations, forms a universal quantum logic gate for quantum computation. The two quantum bits are stored in the internal and external degrees of freedom of a single trapped atom, which is first laser cooled to the zero-point energy. Decoherence effects are identified for the operation, and the possibility of extending the system to more qubits appears promising.
