Celebrating the Shared Evolution of the Safe Drinking Water Act and Partnership Programs
While water professionals celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in 2024, this year also marks the Partnership for Safe Water's 29-year milestone of supporting advances in water utility optimization. Although the Partnership was established 21 years after SDWA, their histories are inextricably linked.
Congratulations to the Partnership for Safe Water!
The June 2020 meeting of AWWA's Board of Directors opened a little differently this year with the reading of a proclamation in recognition of a special milestone: the 25th anniversary of the Partnership for Safe Water. The proclamation recognized the hundreds of water treatment plants and distribution systems that participate in the Partnership's optimization programs, serving a combined population of more than 100 million across North America—and now the globe.

Staff Engagement is Key to Optimization
Optimization is a team effort, requiring buy-in and commitment from staff at all levels of an organization. Water and wastewater utilities are most effective in their optimization efforts when employees are provided the opportunity to collaborate, share ideas, and be empowered to achieve excellence.
Improve Performance with Membrane Filtration Self‐Assessment
Water treatment plants using membrane filtration treatment have new guidance available for process assessment and optimization using the Partnership for Safe Water approach. By evaluating direct and indirect integrity testing data, the membrane filtration self-assessment process helps utilities optimize performance.

Distribution System Optimization Starts with Data
Although producing safe drinking water at treatment plants is highly regulated, only a limited but increasing number of regulations directly apply to distribution systems. The regulations exist to ensure delivery of safe water to consumers, providing an additional layer of public health protection after water leaves the water treatment plant. AWWA Standard G200-09, Distribution Systems Operation and Management, is a good reference for distribution system regulations and best practices.
