Fishing Report - March 14, 2024
G’day all, hope everyone is well. Unfortunately, I’m starting on a negative. It’s disappointing to see negative posts on social media in regards to the Murray River here in Barham with comments like it’s dangerously low and that all the fish have died in recent flood events. Yes, the river is in recovery mode and it will recover if it’s managed correctly. What happened during the floods that effects fish and fishing? We had a bla
Fishing Report - February 29, 2024
G’day all, the river here has finally started to clean up and is looking pretty good at the moment, so dust off your favourite lures and give them a run. The local fishing comp was held on the weekend and was again a big success; there were 21 cod over 55cm measured, and the biggest was 79.5cm, which was caught on a lure. There were also 12 yellow bellies caught over 30cm, and the biggest was 49.5. The year is flying along and before we know it the water will start to cool
Fishing Report - February 15, 2024
G’day all, it’s been an interesting couple of weeks since the last report, with some quality fish being caught around the area. I’ll start with Lake Meran, which has been producing unbelievable amounts of redfin, some regularly going over the 40cm mark with some anglers bagging 50 plus fish in a couple of hours, with most fish going over 35cm. Successful methods I have used have been trawling small lures until a schoo

Lions Club Bingo - November 16, 2023
What a good roll up, 30 bingo players in total. All had a great night. With 30 players, we can make the size of the prizes better; it’s good for everybody. Neither the wildcard or game 20 jackpots went off, making them next week – wildcard $1,000 in 51 calls, and game 20 $120 in 55 calls. The game 30 jackpot of $80 was won by Joyce Craig. Roster for November 22: R. Arthur, T. Barker, B. Rash.
Fishing Report - November 16, 2023
G’day all, I’ve had quite a few outings since the last report, all chasing redfin at Lake Meran and Lake Charm. Meran has been producing some really nice redfin 40cm plus on various lures like small StumpJumpers or similar. Soft plastics and rubber vibes like fish trap lures have also been really popular. Trawling in around 3m of water until you bump into a school has been workin
Tornado survivor shares story
Contributed by Barry Stewart As the storm approached Wingo, I told my daughter and friend to take cover in their basement. Then, as it advanced onto Mayfield, I told my girlfriend to go to her basement. Now, as the storm tore through Mayfield, I casually began my safety preparation. I took my pet, Buddy, to the walk-in closet in the far back corner of my house. Buddy laid on the little bed attached to the wall, as I studied how to install the Channel 6 weather app on my phone.

Foil Plant Science Research Farm in Starkville, Miss., from June to November 2019 and from May to November 2020. Ten plugs (5 inches by 5 inches, 25 square inches apiece) were planted in each plot.
Agassiz athletes help Team BC capture gold medals
Local athletes and coaches were involved with three of the gold medal-winning soccer teams at the 2017 North American Indigenous Games. Team BC captured four gold medals in soccer at Toronto's 2017 North American Indigenous Games, July 16 to 23 – and local athletes and coaches were involved with three of the teams. The U-19 boys team included Mackenzie Peters, Dredan Naistus and Thomas Andrew – all of Seabird Island First Nation – and Keigan Charlie of Sts'ailes First Nation.
Summer Smash makes big impression
A truck rounds the last turn at Summer Smash last Saturday during the first day of the annual event at the Hope Sports Bowl. (Greg Laychak photo) A truck rounds the last turn at Summer Smash on Saturday during the first day of the annual event at the Hope Sports Bowl. Bad news must have happened somewhere else last weekend, because Hope's two-day motorsports event was a smashing success. Spokesman for the Hope Motorsports Group, Scott Medlock, said on Tuesday, "It was a fantastic weekend.
Slo-pitch making a return in Hope
Apart from occasional weekend and Brigade Days tournaments, the ball diamonds at Sixth Avenue hadn't seen much action since about 2010, when I last reported on a local slo-pitch league. That changed this spring, under the persuasion of George Campbell, president of the new Hope Slo-Pitch League. "The season started on April 10," said Campbell, Tuesday. "We started out with ten teams but it eventually turned out to be eight. We've got one driving from Boston Bar, the Yahoos.
Mustangs muscle through the mud
Hope Mustang Jessica Dupas thwarts an Enderby attack, while teammate Zoe Kamp prepares for the flying mud in last Friday’s tournament action at HSS. With two more teams than in their first-ever home tournament last year, the Hope Secondary School Mustang girls had more variety to work against, in their quest for a top-tier finish in their 11-team tournament on the April 8 weekend.
‘Don’t eat the green snow’
Hope’s Nordiques outlasted the Wasted Knights of Abbotsford in the championship match of the 16-team St. Patrick’s Day tournament, the final event of the hockey season. If you noticed a pile of green snow in the Hope Arena’s ice dump before St. Patrick’s Day: no, the Zamboni driver didn’t mow down a field of shamrocks. It was simply a big experiment that went wrong. “Bigly wrong,” as Donald Trump might say.
Arrowsmith sets new stair-climb records
Hope volunteer firefighter Rebecca Arrowsmith receives her awards for fastest female and highest fundraiser at the BC Lung Association’s Climb the Wall event at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel in Vancouver. Presenting the awards were Marcel Syens (centre) from MSA – The Safety Company and Dan Eklund from the Vancouver Fire Department.
Girls finish eighth in the Fraser Valley, but they’ll be back
Hope Mustang Maritza Botha drives to the basket, versus Surrey Christian on Feb. 23 at Abbotsford Christian School. Surrey Christian, went on to win 57-31, eliminating Hope Secondary School from the tournament. The senior Mustang girls now know what they’ll be up against next basketball season, after getting bumped out of the Fraser Valley single-A championships Feb. 23. “The last time Hope Secondary was in the Fraser Valleys was 2015, which was one-and-out,” said head coach Jeff Kuhn.
Dancing the night away, at minus 15
Hope Venturer Jacob Medlock strains against the bungee rope, to place his marker far down the track. He ended up one step short of the eventual winner at the annual RoVent winter camp in Manning Park, Feb. 10-13. It’s a bad sign when you’re planning to go winter camping and the highways are closed due to snow. But, despite schools being closed for four out of five days before the B.C. Family Day weekend, Hope’s Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers commissioner, Crystal Medlock was feeling hopeful.
Lungs of fire, so others can breathe easier
Hope volunteer firefighter Rebecca Arrowsmith (shown with District of Hope fire chief, Tom DeSorcy) will be attempting to beat her record of 10 minutes and 37 seconds for 48 flights of stairs — in full gear — at the annual Stairclimb for Clean Air event in Vancouver Feb. 26. Perhaps when she’s 90 years old and struggling to step up to a sidewalk, Rebecca Arrowsmith will grin and recall the times she raced up 48 flights of stairs in 10 minutes — in full firefighter’s gear.
Frozen Kawkawa Lake becomes winter activity central
Hope Minor Hockey Association Wildcat Josiah Tiessen chases after the puck on Kawkawa Lake. Hundreds visited the lake during the cold spell for various activities. Kawkawa Lake has been making quite a name for itself, starting with the Jan. 1 polar bear swim, where a small crowd of crazies had to break through fresh ice to take their plunge. Temperatures took a deeper dip after that, making the ice more stable than it has been in perhaps 20 years.
Barry's Best: sports reporter's six favourite stories, and why.
I’ve been writing and shooting as a freelancer for The Standard since the early 1980s — almost as many years as I worked as a teacher at Silver Creek and Coquihalla Elementary schools. When I leaf through old copies of the paper, I’m reminded of the local history I’ve helped record and of the people and programs I’ve given a voice to. I didn’t think I could keep it going, when we moved to Chilliwack in 2004 — but then-editor Simone Rolph wouldn’t let me quit without giving it a try.
Breathtaking scenery for polar bear swim on Kawkawa Lake
Where people swam on Sunday, they skated on Thursday. The big freeze was on its way on New Year’s Eve but Hope’s polar bear swim organizer, Brian McKinney thought the swim would still be okay. “When I went there the night before, there was a light slush,” said McKinney last Monday. “I even threw snowballs through it. Last year, there had only been a light skim of ice at the dock.” Things changed by Sunday, Jan. 1, morning and what still looked like slush had turned solid.
Swim meet returns to Hope in 2017
Nine-year-old Violette Freimark polishes her form at the RiverMonsters’ winter fit practice. Eight young swimmers are staying in tune through the off-season, under the direction of winter coach, Mike Freimark. The club will host a swim meet in the summer of 2017, making it the first meet since 2005 at the Dan Sharrers Aquatic Centre.
Annual rite of passage in local streams
A lone kokanee salmon plies the waters along Stephens Road, last Friday. The annual spawning run has passed its peak but a few kokanee can still be spotted in the streams on the east side of Kawkawa Lake. Keep an eye out for coho salmon, which will be in local streams this winter. Your nose knows when it’s salmon spawning season. Even before you get to the creek and see the splashing and the spent carcasses, you — and the bears — know that the time has come to check out the annual runs. On Nov.
Shoot-out win caps successful tournament
While goalkeeper Ben Gladue (centre) scrambles to get back in the net, defender Jacob Chisholm tries to thwart a Golden shot, in Friday’s tournament action at Hope Secondary. Golden finished fifth out of nine teams, while Hope finished seventh. He picked the worst-ever October for Hope Secondary’s first-ever boys’ soccer tournament — but coach Jeremy Smith came up with a miracle last weekend.
Pushing up awareness of front line crews’ PTSD
Jesse James (left) and Barry Stewart have been taking part in the 22 Push Ups for 22 Days challenge, to raise awareness and funding for military veterans and first responders suffering from PTSD. They assume the ready position on the banks of the Vedder River, Tuesday. Dogwood Valley resident Jesse James may be more cautious with his compliments in the future. A recent comment to a friend got James involved in a daily exercise challenge that is working its way across the country this fall.
Schoolteacher chosen as Umpire of the Year
Hope resident Aaron Poulin poses with his daughter Lily at July’s Women’s World Softball Championship in Surrey. Poulin has been chosen from a group of seven nominees, as Canada’s Home Run Sports Umpire of the Year. When Canada is known for having some of the best softball umpires in the world, it’s a big deal to be chosen as Canada’s “Umpire of the Year.” Hope resident and school teacher, Aaron Poulin got the call on Oct.
