Basem Hamid’s Biography

Basem Hamid, a distinguished neurologist and pain medicine specialist, started his medical journey at Damascus University, where he obtained his M.D. His early education culminated as a high school valedictorian in Damascus, Syria, before he embarked on an esteemed medical career in 1995. His quest for advanced knowledge led him to the United States for further training.

In 1996, he initiated his postgraduate training with an internship at Mount Sinai University Services in New York City. This was followed by a comprehensive internal medicine and neurology residency at West Virginia University from 1997 to 2001. His exemplary performance there earned him the role of Chief Resident in the Department of Neurology, where he oversaw the training of new residents.

Driven by a passion for addressing complex pain issues, he specialized in pain medicine through a fellowship at the University of Iowa's Department of Anesthesia in 2002, completed in 2003. This specialization equipped him with profound expertise in managing chronic pain conditions, cancer-related pain, and neuropathic pain.

Basem Hamid MD’s professional journey included pivotal roles, such as Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he significantly enhanced their pain management program from 2003 to 2006. He then furthered his career at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, taking up roles that improved the quality of life for patients experiencing severe pain.

In 2008, he founded the Innova Pain Center in Houston, Texas, assuming the role of Director. Here, he spearheaded innovative pain management treatments, significantly impacting patients grappling with persistent pain conditions.

His notable research contributions include leading a multicenter study on Nasalfent for breakthrough cancer pain and exploring pregabalin's role in preemptive analgesia for acute herpes zoster. These efforts have advanced pain management techniques and have been supported by prestigious grants from organizations like Medtronic and Kyphon Inc.

Dr. Hamid's commitment extends beyond his clinical duties. He has been recognized for his contributions to the community and medical education, receiving accolades such as the Kennedy Center Award for Volunteers and the Research Appreciation Award from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
