Panda Bear - Sinister Grift
With Panda Bear’s newest record Sinister Grift, Noah Lennox collaborated with Animal Collective bandmate Josh Dibb to produce his first solo project in five years. It’s an album striving to evoke a certain mood, with the opening side of the LP using warm instruments to remind you of the seaside and summer weather. The sunny vacation vibe is prevalent throughout the first half, with bouncy guitar chords that are playful and fun.
Sam Fender - People Watching
Sam Fender’s newest release People Watching sees the British musician soar to new heights. Ever since the release of his debut Hypersonic Missiles, Fender has been highlighted as one of the greatest talents to come out of the UK in the last decade. With Seventeen Going Under, he saw himself reach superstar levels in the country with the eponymous song going viral on TikTok.
Lambrini Girls - Who Let The Dogs Out
Lambrini Girls, the Brighton-based punk duo consisting of Phoebe Lunny and Lilly Macieira, deliver a debut album filled with whirlwind guitars and lyrics that highlight the injustices and power imbalances of modern-day society. In the context of mainstream UK punk bands, there will always be comparisons back to Idles, however, to compare Lambrini Girls in such a way would be reductive to their unique energy, story and aims.
Mount Eerie - Night Palace
Mount Eerie, real name being Phil Elverum, had taken a 5-year gap after the release of Lost Wisdom, Pt 2 and with any long time gap, there comes serious introspection and reevaluation of oneself and artistry and the 26-track epic Night Palace is no exception. There’s a lot to process and take in with the album. The runtime, just under 90 minutes, is intimidating and requires the listener to commit to the album fully in order to truly appreciate it.
Primal Scream - Come Ahead
Primal Scream’s first album since 2016 Come Ahead is an ambitious but ultimately unsatisfying project. The band’s 12th record features some of frontman Bobby Gillespie’s most personal and introspective songwriting yet and according to him, it was the first time the lyrics came before the music. This is arguably where the problem lies.
Orla Gartland - Everybody Needs A Hero
Everybody Needs A Hero is Orla’s Gartland’s newest release – a 12-track exploration into long-term love that showcases Orla’s progression as both a musician and a songwriter. The maturity of the writing truly draws the listener in. Orla sings about the issues (and pleasures) of young adult relationships with a self-awareness that shows her skill as a writer.
Hinds - VIVA HINDS
“Hi, how are you?” Thus opens VIVA HINDS, the fourth album from Spanish indie-rockers Hinds. VIVA HINDS comes after a period of hardship for co-founders Carlotta Cosials and Ana Perrote. Four years has passed since their Prettiest Curse, the longest gap taken between their albums, and in that time they have had to deal with being independent and splitting from their management as well as their bassist and drummer leaving in 2020.
