Floating volcanic rock is disrupting life in Papua New Guinea – and the problem will last a long time
People in parts of Papua New Guinea are facing an unusual problem. Floating volcanic rock is making boat travel difficult, blocking access to fishing grounds and disrupting daily life in coastal communities. The source of the pumice is the ongoing Titan Ridge eruption from an underwater volcano in the Bismarck Sea. Since May 9, the eruption has produced vast amounts of pumice – a lightweight, porous volcanic rock that floats on the ocean surface.

I found 256 things that made me happy this year - there’s one clear lesson for 2026
As an eldest daughter and chronic overthinker, I am not a happy person by design. I am constantly setting New Year's resolutions I can't possibly stick to, my to-do lists are long and unnticked, and I'm always on the hunt for the next gold star to tell me everything is ok. But this year, I decided to slow everything down. No New Year's resolutions, no goals to complete before Q1 ended - only a simple task of looking for the things that made me smile in my everyday.
I did Dry January once and this is the one reason why I will never do it again
The Dry January tips on TikTok and across social media meant I'd never thought about alcohol more. (Image: Newsquest) If you are considering trying your hand at Dry January in 2026, this is my plea for you to reconsider. I'm not a big drinker, but a couple of years ago, I challenged myself to go without booze for the month. The aim was to start my New Year on a fresh slate - leaning into my Resolution for the year of prioritising my health.
I tried Aldi's viral £144.99 Reformer Pilates machine and one thing blew me away
3 1/1 I have a confession - I booked my first Pilates class earlier this year, and I never went. So, when Aldi offered a review of their viral Reformer machine, I saw my chance to redeem myself. Becoming a Pilates girl - strong and toned- has been an unrealised dream on my 2025 vision board. There is something about the classes that has always intimidated me. I don't know if it's the jargon you're meant to know even before your first session that stops me.
Take a peak inside an LG smart cottage which was like walking into the future
From flying cars to robots that cater to our every need, you might (not so secretly) hope that the future resembles something like Marty McFly on a hoverboard. We won't know for sure for a while yet, but I'd take bets that it probably looks more like this smart cottage located on LG's Smart Park in Changwon, South Korea. In June, I took a plane (and not a DeLorean, I'm afraid) to South Korea on a press tour with the consumer and home electronics brand LG.

The curious and vibrant European city that you need to visit in 2026
Have you ever been to Bergen in Norway? (Image: Newsquest) When you touch down in Bergen - and before you even leave the airport’s car park – you’ll discover something incredibly curious. Spreading ridge migration enabled by plume-ridge de-anchoring - Nature Communications
Abstract It has long been recognised that spreading ridges are kept in place by competing subduction forces that drive plate motions. Asymmetric strain rates pull spreading ridges in the direction of the strongest slab pull force, which partially explains why spreading ridges can migrate vast distances. However, the interaction between mantle plumes and spreading ridges plays a relatively unknown role on the evolution of plate boundaries.
