When LA area gets rain, we can’t afford to waste it: Guest commentary
Over the past couple of days, drought-stricken Los Angeles received about an inch of rain. But because so much of the Los Angeles area is paved, more than 3.8 billion gallons of that fresh rainwater was flushed into the L.A. River and out to the Pacific Ocean, carrying pollution and toxins along the way. As Southern California faces a sixth year of severe drought, we can’t afford to waste this precious resource. The new climate reality demands that Los Angeles get water-smart — and fast.
NRDC Fights to Fix L.A. Stormwater Policy
Los Angeles loves its beaches. In the summer, you practically have to elbow your way through the mob of tourists, surfers, and families to get to the water. Can you imagine what life would be like if we were still applying the same food safety rules or medical standards from 30 years ago? Shockingly, this is exactly the case when it comes to water pollution standards for steam electric power plants.
Now or Never: It's Time for the State Board to Require Stormwater Capture and Help California Mitigate the Drought
Anyone who's driven outside Los Angeles has seen the effects this drought has had on our landscape: hillsides are brown, farm fields have been fallowed, and reservoirs are critically low. It's a stark reminder that the Golden State is, in fact, a drought state; and in the midst of the worst drought in more than 1,000 years, we need to be using every drop of water as wisely as possible.
