Real-time single-particle imaging of functional lungs reveals mosaic-like patterns of aerosol deposition in alveoli
Abstract Inhaled pathogens, pollutants and therapeutics interact with the dynamic architecture of the alveoli, yet how individual particles move and deposit at cellular resolution remains unclear. Here, utilizing the crystal ribcage platform, we track aerosol transport in ex vivo, actively ventilated lungs using real-time fluorescence imaging with single-particle resolution, capturing droplet trajectories, free-flight motion, impact orientation and deposition timescales within functional alveoli.
Crystal ribcage: a platform for probing real-time lung function at cellular resolution - Nature Methods
Abstract Understanding the dynamic pathogenesis and treatment response in pulmonary diseases requires probing the lung at cellular resolution in real time. Despite advances in intravital imaging, optical imaging of the lung during active respiration and circulation has remained challenging. Here, we introduce the crystal ribcage: a transparent ribcage that allows multiscale optical imaging of the functioning lung from whole-organ to single-cell level.
Modeling lung perfusion abnormalities to explain early COVID-19 hypoxemia
Abstract Early stages of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are associated with silent hypoxia and poor oxygenation despite relatively minor parenchymal involvement.
A Markov chain model of particle deposition in the lung
Abstract Particle deposition in the lung during inhalation is of interest to a wide range of biomedical sciences due to the noninvasive therapeutic route to deliver drugs to the lung and other organs via the blood stream. Before reaching the alveoli, particles must transverse the bifurcating network of airways.
Avalanches and power law behavior in aortic dissection propagation
Abstract Aortic dissection is a devastating cardiovascular disease known for its rapid propagation and high morbidity and mortality. The mechanisms underlying the propagation of aortic dissection are not well understood. Our study reports the discovery of avalanche-like failure of the aorta during dissection propagation that results from the local buildup of strain energy followed by a cascade failure of inhomogeneously distributed interlamellar collagen fibers.
A Synthetic Bioinspired Carbohydrate Polymer with Mucoadhesive Properties
Communication PDF PDF Share Abstract Mucoadhesive polymers are of significant interest to the pharmaceutical, medical device, and cosmetic industries. Polysaccharides possessing charged functional groups, such as chitosan, are known for mucoadhesive properties but suffer from poor chemical definition and solubility, while the chemical synthesis of polysaccharides is challenging with few reported examples of synthetic carbohydrate polymers with engineered‐in ionic functionality.

Day-to-day variability of inspiratory resistance: A sensitive and specific marker of asthma
AbstractRationale: It is known that day-to-day variability of lung function is increased in asthma but it is also increased in COPD (Timmins et al.
