Solar subsidies unfair to renters
As a longtime Chair of the California State Senate Energy Utilities and Commerce Committee, I have been a passionate advocate for policies that not only advance the state’s transition to 100-percent clean energy but do so in the most affordable and equitable manner for all Californians. One current policy that flies in the face of affordability and equity is the state’s rooftop solar subsidy program, Net Energy Metering.
Opinion: Why California is giving some families $500 a month for two years to spend as they please
Hueso represents California’s 40th District, which includes Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, National City and portions of San Diego and Imperial County. He lives in Logan Heights. In January, we honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for his life’s work and legacy as a champion of civil rights issues. Dr. King had many visions for moving us closer toward what he called a “Beloved Community,” where people of all identities and backgrounds are treated equally.
Opinion: Lithium in Imperial Valley could light California’s future
Hochschild is chair of the California Energy Commission and lives in Berkeley. Hueso is a state senator representing the 40th District, including Imperial County and the border region of San Diego County. He lives in Logan Heights. Paz is the executive director of Alianza Coachella Valley and chair of the Lithium Valley Commission. She lives in La Quinta.
California must stop taxing veterans on their military retirement income
Everyone wants to live in the Golden State and especially “Sunny” San Diego. From the warm coastal beaches, white snow-capped mountains, and grassy terrains filled with wildlife, our state attracts tourists and residents from all over the world and is among the top three most visited states in the nation. California is also a hub for military personnel. It proudly boasts having the highest number of active-duty personnel in the nation and a whopping 32 military bases.
It’s time for a four-year university in Chula Vista
Since 1986, Chula Vista has envisioned a state-of-the-art university to serve its students in the South Bay. Chula Vista, or “beautiful view” sits on one of the most beautiful areas in the county of San Diego—between the San Diego Bay and our vast mountain foothills. Our community has steadily grown, increasing to nearly 300,000 residents mostly due to the expansion to the east. Our city boasts an innovative transit system, thriving businesses and restaurants, and a rich cultural history.
Jerry Brown should sign SB 649 to provide small cell technology
Gov. Jerry Brown can bring the wireless revolution to California by signing Senate Bill 649. Telecommunications access is a necessity in the modern world, so much so that governments around the world pay to subsidize wireless deployment. My legislation, SB 649, does not rely on taxpayers to finance these strategic investments. Small cells attached to utility poles, rather than large cell towers, will be the instruments of choice for unleashing private investment to increase network capacity.
Working Californians deserve a day at the beach, too
While many Californians cooled off at the beach this summer, that classic experience is out of reach for a lot of hardworking families. Soaring real estate prices on the coast have driven many families further and further inland. The cost of a trip to the beach – gas, parking and food – quickly adds up. In a recent UCLA statewide poll, 90 percent said the condition of the coast is important to them personally and 62 percent said that limited public access to the coast is a problem.
In Response: No favors in ridesharing bill
In response to “Rideshare bills stall in Hueso’s committee” (March 11): California prides itself in having a citizen legislature that creates rules to protect the consumer. I support innovation in any industry, including technology-enabled ride-hailing services. However, as chair of the energy committee, it is my duty to protect public safety and to ensure state policies are fair. I do special favors for no one. The two bills the article references are neither fair nor protective of public safety.
In Response: Forming a gas price solution
In response to the March 30 U-T San Diego editorial “Hueso offers hollow posturing on gas prices,” I would like to respond with facts. As chair of the Energy Committee, I was compelled to investigate whether or not price gouging is occurring in California. Our hearing was balanced, with representatives from the California Energy Commission, consumer watchdogs and two representatives from the oil industry. A gasoline oligopoly does in fact exist in California.
