Learning about and presenting on school assessment is as mad as a bag of hammers, to mix a metaphor. The purpose of assessment in schools is very muddy. Is assessment to tell parent something? To motivate students to do better? To give teachers information for targeting teaching? As a summation of learning? As/of/for learning? A combination of the above or something else entirely?

Conservative education commentators attract a lot of clicks, they rail against multiculturalism, the teaching of Indigenous perspectives and one was even comfortable using the ‘n’ word three times during his 2019 book launch (Moran 2019). Some of the views expressed are offensive and incorrect and some are just incorrect. Bigotry Conservative writers see themselves as anti-PC crusaders. In today’s changing world, students need a broader range of skills beyond traditional academic subject areas that they can apply to a wide range of real-life situations. Students will encounter many future situations where they have to bring together multiple complex skills to complete tasks. Using examples from the U.S. and Australia, we will outline two complementary methods that teach these complex skillsets.
