Beware Confected Outrage Aimed at BBC
The last few weeks have seen the BBC embroiled in a series of “scandals” that have taken up the usual disproportionate amount of air time and column inches. It’s been prime fodder for the right-wing press, who love nothing better than to present the BBC as a hive of deranged Bolsheviks bent on the destruction of polite society. I witnessed this first hand. I worked in the BBC’s press office for over six years. A large part of our work was to parry such attacks. It was a relentless task.
Never To Forget
Text within this block will maintain its original spacing when published Nothing which was being done, no matter how stupid, no matter how many people knew and foretold the consequences, could be undone or prevented. Every event had the finality of a last judgement, a judgement that was passed neither by God nor by the devil but looked rather like the expression of some un-redeemably stupid fatality. —Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951) Against stupidity we are defenceless.

Could the Chargers be the surprise NFL team in 2021-22?
The Chargers being a competitive force in the NFL is probably not your first thought, but consider this. The Chargers went 7-9-0 last year with a first-year quarterback and an offensive line in desperate need of help. They added badly needed offensive linemen, All Pro centre Corey Linsey and rookie left tackle Rashawn Slater. The Chargers are hoping Justin Herbert can build on a solid rookie campaign.
Time to end ‘Global War on Terror’ phrase?
Time to end ‘Global War on Terror’ phrase? RAF MILDENHALL, England — Is it time to put an end to the “Global War on Terror?” In a speech, a prominent British politician on Monday was planning to echo calls from U.S. House Armed Services Committee staff member to eschew phrases such as “global war on terrorism.” An internal memo from the committee, made public two weeks ago, advised authors to keep the term “global war on terrorism” out of the 2008 defense budget authorization bill.
Thule Air Base unit provides satellite connections to globe
THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — Somewhere high above the planet, a reconnaissance satellite takes a photo of a Baghdad street corner and stores it in its memory. Such satellites also can gather information on a storm front headed for Europe, or the American South, or virtually anywhere else on the globe. Downloading data from a complex hunk of metal tearing through the cosmos at thousands of feet per second, it turns out, can be a little complicated.
In American hands, Lebanon evacuees 'know we are safe now'
BEIRUT, Lebanon — From the deck of the USS Trenton in the Mediterranean Sea about a mile off the coast of Beirut, Mahmoud Taleb looked back on his journey with near disbelief. He had been visiting his parents in a Lebanese village close to the Israeli border with his wife and three kids when fighting erupted last week, about halfway into the family’s monthlong trip to Lebanon.
Multaka mayor takes unique approach to quieting insurgent activity
MULTAKA, Iraq — You just can’t help but make the comparison: The guy seems a lot like the Godfather. As the mayor of Multaka, a medium-size town just west of Kirkuk in north central Iraq, Abdul Kareem Ali, known as Abu Saif, is more than just a civic leader, he is a man on whom the community centers and whose word acts like local law. Sitting behind a big wooden desk in a large and well-furnished room, he has a grave, measured countenance.
What some of the greatest horror movies of all time tell us about economics
by Ben Murray in Entertainment Tuesday 25 October 2016 Share Tweet Share Pin it Email Share Horror. Love it or hate it, horror has been with us for pretty much as long as we’ve been making up stories. But what, if anything, does horror have to do with economics? Well, when it comes to cinema, there's all the money these movies bring in, as well as the fact that horror often provides wannabe film-makers with a start in the industry.
What is Opportunity Cost? — Economy
Image: © Warner Bros Blue pill or red pill? Whichever you don't take is known as the 'opportunity cost' - and it's a really big deal when it comes to economics... by Lukas Boehm in Issues Wednesday 20 April 2016 Share Tweet Share Pin it Email Share What’s the big idea? They say everything has a cost. And when you look at your debit card bill from Saturday night, and see all those rounds of shots you bought for everyone, you might agree. Still, curing that hangover the next day was free, right?
Unitized Group Rations gain some fans
HOHENFELS, Germany — Going by just the name, it sounds about as appealing as eating your beret. But staring down at steaming mounds of the Unitized Group Ration in a tiny dining facility at the Hohenfels training area this week, soldiers from the 1st Armored Division hardly seemed turned off. “These are 10 times better than MREs,” Sgt. 1st Class Yolanda Lawson from the 1st AD’s headquarters company said, comparing her lunch to the Army’s Meals, Ready to Eat.
