A guide to bootstrapping your open source project with GitHub
There's much more to managing a project with git beyond just committing code and working with branches. GitHub-Driven Development is a process that will help you organize and manage the progression of a project on GitHub, although much of this could be applied to other systems, such as GitLab, as well. This concept isn't only for developers; it can be used for project managers or anyone involved in the development of a project—it could even be applied to non-code projects.
How to run a Raspberry Pi meetup
Raspberry Jam is the name for Raspberry Pi meetups—and they come in many different formats. Some are like traditional tech user groups, but many are family-friendly events that provide opportunities for kids to learn to code and make things. The Raspberry Pi Foundation supports the community of Raspberry Jams and has just released a Guidebook to help people get started. Raspberry Jams take place all around the world—but mostly in the United Kingdom and the United States.
The physical computing capabilities of the Raspberry Pi
While the Raspberry Pi is an excellent and affordable mini Linux computer with a stylish and functional desktop user interface, it has plenty of scope beyond that of a regular PC. Here's an overview of the physical computing capabilities of the Pi. Since 2014, with the release of the Model B+, the Raspberry Pi's form factor has stayed the same, including the uniform 40-pin GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) pin header.
Announcing Pi Zero W with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth
Today, on the fifth anniversary of the release of the original Raspberry Pi, the Foundation has released Pi Zero W, a Pi Zero with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, for $10. The original Pi Zero was great (and still is!)—but many people found its lack of wireless connectivity an inconvenience. Now with Zero W, you can connect to the Internet without using any adapters, and you can even use a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard rather than wired USB, or use a Bluetooth speaker for audio.
Try Raspberry Pi's PIXEL OS on your PC
Over the last four years, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has put a great deal of effort into optimizing Raspbian, its port of Debian, for Pi hardware, including creating new educational software, programming tools, and a nicer looking desktop. In September, we released an update that introduced Pi Improved Xwindows Environment, Lightweight (PIXEL), the Pi's new desktop environment.
Get started today with a Raspberry Pi
So you have a Raspberry Pi, or you’re thinking of getting one, and you want to know how to get started and how to become a master user of one. The Raspberry Pi is a single board computer, meaning that in many ways it's a regular PC, except that everything that makes up the computer is on a single board rather than a traditional PC, which has a motherboard and requires a number of additional daughterboards to make a whole unit. There are a number of different Raspberry Pi models.
Learn about the Raspberry Pi Foundation's mission and programs
This month's column comes from Raleigh, North Carolina where I attended All Things Open 2016! This post consists of the highlights of the lightning talk I gave at the conference, which covered the mission and purpose of Raspberry Pi, and our programs and outreach including Code Club for kids, Raspberry Jams, and Picademy. I'm Raspberry Pi's Community Manager, based in Cambridge, UK. We have sold over 10 million Raspberry Pis since launching our first product in 2012.
Picademy: Free professional development for teachers from the Raspberry Pi Foundation
From the beginning, Raspberry Pi has been all about education. The idea that a piece of hardware everyone could afford in the hands of students used to learn programming skills and to build things was at the heart of the Foundation's mission to fix a problem in the education system in the UK. Soon it became apparent that the hardware was only part of the solution, and hands-on training for teachers would be needed, too.
