Review: ‘House of Smoke,’ a memoir by John T. Edge, is an honest accounting of his rise and fall
HOUSE OF SMOKE: A Southerner Goes Searching for Home. By John T. Edge. Crown. 272 pages. $30. “In my beginning is my end” — the opening line of T.S. Eliot’s “East Coker” — initiates one of the great meditations on the cyclical interplay of past, present and future in the context of the writer’s return to his origins. Later, and in the American South, a character in William Faulkner’s “Requiem for a Nun” acknowledges the same dynamic. “The past is never dead,” he says, “it’s not even past.” John T.
Review: The unappreciated influence of India is the topic of historian William Dalrymple’s magnificent ‘The Golden Road’
THE GOLDEN ROAD: How Ancient India Transformed the World. By William Dalrymple. Bloomsbury. 432 pages. $32.99. Toward the end of “The Golden Road: How Ancient India Transformed the World,” historian William Dalrymple quotes an observation made by the Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore about a visit he made to Southeast Asia in 1927.
Review: ‘Heartbreaker’ a great story of a great band and its ups and downs
HEARTBREAKER: A Memoir. By Mike Campbell with Ari Surdoval. Grand Central Publishing. 464 pages. $32. If a memoir is to be judged by its candor and insight, “Heartbreaker” is exceptional — remarkable, in fact — and is easily among the best to come out of the world of rock music in the last decade. Mike Campbell, the eponymous Heartbreaker and primary author of the book, was the musical engine of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for all of the band’s 40-year run.
Review: Webster and Lochte's 'Rockets' Red Glare' a well-crafted, enjoyable thriller of our times
ROCKETS’ RED GLARE: A Sage Mendiluze Novel. By William Webster and Dick Lochte. Blackstone Publishing. 309 pages. $27.99 Just in time for the beach reading season, William Webster and Dick Lochte have published their debut novel, “Rockets’ Red Glare.” A thriller in the vein of Tom Clancey, Stephen Coonts and Mark Greany, “Rockets’ Red Glare” is pitch perfect for its genre — fast-paced and punchy, with a compelling story and engaging characters.
Artificial Compassion in The Talos Principle 2
The (unexplained) technology of the Somnodrome lets a robot have a direct conversation with their subconscious mind, and you can decide to try it out and broadcast what happens to everyone else. I recommend doing this because the sequence (specifically credited to Tom Jubert) was my favorite part of the game.
