Alaska's not a sitting duck so stop crying wolf
Steven Levi takes us on quite a journey in his April 25 community perspective piece. He leads with futuristic visions of energy from Alaskan coal beaming directly into electric vehicles made from Alaskan minerals. Wow! I did not take up Mr. Levi’s invitation to read the Wikipedia article explaining coal-to-satellite-to-electric-car tech, so I don’t have much to say about this aside from that I hope he’s right! It’s his rather alarming conclusion that I’d like to address here, though.
An ugly reality we're soon to face
To the editor: Anita Hartmann leads her letter of March 26 with a telling anecdote about her time on a “medical mission” in newly post-communist Berlin. Like so many of her contemporaries on their missionary tours of the de-communizing world, she pushed her German counterparts towards austerity and rationalization, presumably modeled on doctrinaire neoliberalism.
Extension of the EFSA Pesticide Genotoxicity Database
In 2012 the EFSA Panel on Plant Protection Products and their Residues, the Panel pointed out to the need for a well-curated database of genotoxicity data to support reliable use of in silico methods for predicting genotoxicity of chemicals in this domain. Subsequently, EFSA developed a database of genotoxicity extracted from data submitted in the course of regulatory approval of pesticides, and this database was used to test the performance of existing tools for predicting genotoxicity.
Matrine and Oxymatrine: Evaluating the gene mutation potential using in silico tools and the bacterial reverse mutation assay (Ames test)
The quinolizidine alkaloids matrine and its N-oxide oxymatrine occur in plants of the genus Sophora. Recently, matrine was sporadically detected in liquorice products. Morphological similarity of the liquorice plant Glycyrrhiza glabra with Sophora species and resulting confusion during harvesting may explain this contamination, but use of matrine as pesticide has also been reported.

'Make Alaska open for business'?
March 22 To the editor: One could almost forgive Jason Brune for his confusion regarding his prestigious new appointment. After all, the Department of Environmental Conservation and the Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development have some of the same letters, and if you say them real fast they sound quite similar.
