Unbeknownst to him, that first step into the professional world would shape his career for nearly half a century.

Moser on Manufacturing: Reshoring and the Truth About Tariffs
A tariff is a tax levied on imported or, occasionally, exported goods, designed to regulate international trade and safeguard domestic industries. President Donald Trump’s administration intends to use tariffs for these purposes, as well as to support border security initiatives and compensate for revenue losses from proposed tax cuts. As I contemplate this column, unexpected shifts, rapid deployment, and swift tariff alterations make writing challenging.

Emerging Technology Accelerators and Barriers
The manufacturing industry is positioned for growth due to several factors, including reshoring efforts and the expansion of sectors such as defense, medical, and space. This demand for growth is driving the adoption of new technologies that enable manufacturers to stay competitive, including automation, additive manufacturing, generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI), and digital twins and simulations. However, despite their potential benefits, barriers hindering their adoption remain.
Powering Technology and Human Progress
Evidence shows that the ancestors of modern humans used tools as early as 3 million years ago. In nearly all the time since then, the tools used by modern humans and their hominid ancestors were limited by the power users could physically apply. Over time, humans augmented that power through the domestication of animals and the introduction of simple machines. With the advent of steam power and its application about 300 years ago, productivity was no longer limited by human or animal power.
