Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was the obituaries editor at the Santa Barbara Independent.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I learned how to type on an IBM Selectric II, and wrote papers on a Royal Safari all through college—in the late-'90s!

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Hunter Thompson. Even though he wasn't fictional, his exploits were legendary.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Being a journalist means being hungry for the myriad odd little details and colorful people that make life interesting.

Why did you become a journalist?

Seemed like the thing to do at the time.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No. I played trumpet in the band and swam on the swim team.

What's your favorite drink?

The negroni.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Surfing, wrenching on an old car, running, or hanging out with family and friends.
