Meet Dispatch news planner Beth Bailey
My road to journalism isn’t like most in the business. I wanted to be a registered nurse all my young life, just like my mom. Then I got to high school and fell in love with my typing and shorthand classes. And I excelled in them. After graduation, I was seeking employment and was directed to the managing editor of the Times Recorder newspaper in Zanesville, my hometown. I never even considered that a possibility. I read the newspaper, but never thought I would work there or want to work there.
23 years since 9/11
Bill and his Wednesday co-host Will Selber are joined by their friend and colleague Beth Bailey of the Afghanistan Project podcast — she also previously served in the intelligence community — on the twenty-third anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001. They reflect on where we were then and how we got to where we are now, twenty-three years later. Issues: Issues: Afghanistan Al Qaeda Islamic State Jihadism The Long War
The Complex History of American Dating
The icon indicates free access to the linked research on JSTOR. Every generation has its different rules when it comes to dating. They are often labyrinthine, maybe even contradictory, but the result was generally two people having fun together. And whatever those rules were for you, they probably weren’t the rules of a generation past, and they’ll seem hopelessly outdated to a new generation. Dating is confusing and complex, and as historian Beth Bailey explains, it always has been.
Keeping the Memorial Day Tradition Alive
I spend the week leading up to Memorial Day reading books with my children about the men and women who have fallen in service to our country. We read several books a night so that our family is primed for a deeper understanding of the holiday when we celebrate the meaning of selfless sacrifice. Some of our favorite books give an idea of the scope and breadth of losses experienced during specific military conflicts.
Military Racism · LRB 2 March 2023
In American popular memory, the Second World War remains the ‘good war’, fought, to borrow the title of Tom Brokaw’s 1998 book, by the ‘greatest generation’. It is remembered as a time of national unity that not only destroyed tyrannies overseas but assimilated young men from all regions and ethnic backgrounds into a shared American identity.
Nearly 85,600 sign up for $641M Flint water settlement, but issues remain
Nearly 85,600 requests for money in the Flint water litigation settlement have been submitted, though law firms make up nearly half of the requests, according to a federal court filing made last week. About 51% of the registrations were submitted by individuals and 49% by law firms by the March 29 deadline.
World War II Veterans Recall Liberation of Holocaust Concentration Camps, Prisons, and Ghettos
During World War II, while closing in on the German capital of Berlin, US forces liberated Ohrdruf concentration camp on April 4, 1945. Inside, they found scenes of barbarity left by fleeing Schutzstaffel (SS) forces. On April 12, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Gen. George S. Patton, and other high-ranking American officers arrived to witness the reported horrors.
Patrol Base Abbate: This Nonprofit Offers A Space for Every Veteran
Sgt. Matt Abbate once said being a Marine was the only thing he had ever been good at. More than good, most recall the scout sniper as a legend. His fellow Marines refer to him as “a physical animal and natural leader with a killer instinct and devilish grin,” the “perfect Marine … built like a brick shithouse,” and a person who could “instantly touch someone’s life.” Maj.
How a Michigan Veteran, and a Small Town, are Paying it Forward to Our Troops at the Holidays
1 hour ago · Written by Beth Bailey 1 hour ago · Written by Beth Bailey Mike Mermuys knows the power of a genuine act of kindness. The surface warfare officer had been deployed on the USS Ponce for four months in February 2017, and was already “feeling beat down and trapped [by his] command,” when a surprise birthday card arrived. Fuzzy and bright pink, the card sang a high-pitched birthday song.
The Best Dating Books

Veterans’ Service Continues After Conflict – The Story of the D.C. War Memorial
Between 1917 and 1918, 4.7 million Americans fought in the First World War. 116,516 gave their lives in the conflict. Around 204,000 veterans returned home with wounds, and possibly as many as one in five suffered varying degrees of “shell shock.” Others came back to the U.S. to encounter violent racism, experience perpetual unemployment, or find their farmland in disarray.
Opinion: How to make school closures work for your family
Beth Bailey Published 5:00 p.m. ET April 2, 2020 Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday responded to Michigan’s outbreak of the COVID-19 virus by closing the state’s K-12 schools for the remainder of the year. Like parents in Warrick County, Indiana, and the commonwealth of Virginia, Michigan parents will soon find themselves charged with overseeing a full semester of education for their school-aged children.
Opinion: Fight antisemitism in Michigan

Carson On Baltimore Controversy: ‘When You Hold People Responsible, They Don’t Like It, They Call You A Racist’ Friday on “Fox & Friends,” Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson weighed in on the controversy surrounding Baltimore, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) and President Donald Trump after Trump called it “rat and rodent-infested” on Twitter.
Opinion: Boycott of Israel threatens Dearborn businessman
Beth Bailey Published 11:00 p.m. ET Aug. 5, 2019 A recent “boycott” in Dearborn has demonstrated the danger that the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (known as BDS) movement poses to Americans and their businesses, as well as the impact such activities have on a community and its members. In July 2018, Sam Zahr prepared to open a Burgerim franchise on Greenfield Road, which straddles the border of Dearborn and Detroit.
The First Amendment protects everyone, even despicable neo-Nazis marching at a Pride festival
When the leadership of the National Socialist Movement planned a counterprotest on June 8 of the Motor City Pride Festival in Detroit, they probably hoped for a better turnout. But according to the Anti-Defamation League, the NSM only managed to draw 10 members, sourced from five different states: Michigan, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, and Tennessee. Though Detroit Police Chief James Craig numbered the socialists’ strength at 15 members, his department took the group seriously.
Bring meaning and purpose to your Memorial Day
Memorial Day was first recognized as a holiday, honoring those who died in service to a grateful nation, in 1868. By 1869, according to Time Magazine’s Merrill Fabry, Americans “were already seeing that the ‘joy’ side of Memorial Day was beginning to outweigh the remembrance [side].” The occasion’s somber purpose has been further co-opted with the passage of 150 years. The Memorial Day of the present is a three-day weekend of blowout sales and raucous start of summer celebrations.
You can fight Rashida Tlaib’s bad Holocaust history without politicizing the Holocaust
My dear friend Jessi and I periodically visit the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Mich., to refresh our understanding of the Holocaust, and to inform ourselves about the power of prejudice. On our most recent visit, our guide began his tour by removing a giant tome from a pedestal in the center’s lobby.
What Tainted Companies Should Do Instead Of Holocaust Reparations
In recognition of Yom HaShoah, Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, which falls this year on May 1 and 2, President Trump designated April 28 through May 5 as Holocaust Remembrance Week. During these seven days, Trump asked Americans to take part “with appropriate study, prayers and commemoration…to honor the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution by remembering the lessons of this atrocity so that it is never repeated,” the Jerusalem Post reported.
Unity, not the blame game, will defeat white nationalist hate
Exactly six months after a white nationalist killed 11 Jewish congregants at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, another white nationalist has carried out a shooting directed against American Jews. On April 27, during Passover services at Congregation Chabad temple in Poway, Calif., a 19-year-old male shot four Jewish worshipers. One of his victims, a 60-year-old woman, died of her wounds, having used her own body to shield her rabbi.
Maxine Waters has an insane defense of Jussie Smollett
With its accompanying media fanfare, the case of the unraveling hate hoax put forward by “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett has captured the attention and outrage of Americans. The story Smollett put forward on Jan.

Progressive candidates and new Democratic representatives have offered lots of radical new proposals lately about voting and voters. They include scrapping the 215-year-old Electoral College. Progressives also talk of extending the vote to 16- or 17-year-olds and ex-felons. They wish to further relax requirements for voter identification, same-day registration and voting, and undocumented immigrants voting in local elections. The 2016 victory of Donald Trump shocked the left.

Opinion: Michigan has a Mexican-sourced drug epidemic
Beth Bailey Published 10:50 p.m. ET March 17, 2019 Fentanyl and meth seized by Customs and Border Protection officers is shown at the Nogales Port of Entry at a press conference in Nogales, Arizona. (Photo: Mamta Popat, AP) Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel last month joined 15 other states in filing suit against President Donald Trump on account of his declaration of a national emergency to secure funds to build a wall at our southern border.
The Afghanistan peace talks must consider the views of the conflict's battered veterans
The Pentagon may pull troops from Afghanistan in the next five years as part of ongoing negotiations with the Taliban, potentially putting an end to a conflict in Afghanistan that is dragging towards its 18th year. As we look back at a complex war and nation-building effort overseen by three U.S. presidents, and resulting in the deaths of 3,566 western coalition forces personnel, there are many important points to consider.
Dear AOC: You can have children, want to save the environment, and still oppose the Green New Deal
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., is again making headlines with her ridiculous disaster-peddling. Last weekend, on Instagram Live, the representative questioned the morality of having children in a world she claims will suffer horribly from climate change. “Our planet is going to face disaster if we don’t turn this ship around,” the representative said. “The lives of children are going to be very difficult and it does lead, I think young people, to have a legitimate question.
Facts About Mass Shootings Support Gun Ownership, Not Gun Control
On February 14, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) marked the one-year anniversary of a horrific school shooting by threatening that President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to secure funding for a border wall could be used as precedent for future gun control. Calling the 2018 massacre of 17 students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida “another manifestation of the epidemic of gun violence in America,” Pelosi remarked, “That’s a national emergency.
By Weaponizing Border Policy, Democrats Play Games With Lives
Since the latest government shutdown, Democrats have fed Americans many a line about border security. Their unified messaging started with the collective outcry that President Trump was throwing a temper tantrum, and that the border crisis did not exist, or is manufactured.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib condemns Trump’s 'hate,' takes no responsibility for her own
Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., may want to look in a mirror. She complains about President Trump spewing "hate" and "pitting folks" against each other. She apparently hasn't realized she has done that herself. It’s important to zoom out and talk about what Trump has tapped into and has no problem spewing. It’s hate. It’s othering. It’s pitting folks against marginalized communities.
On Holocaust Remembrance Day, channel the spirit of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we are called to consider the 6 million Jewish and 5 million non-Jewish victims of Nazi genocide during World War II. Given the disturbing trend of rising anti-Semitism at home, and in countries such as Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia, it is especially critical that we make the effort to recollect the Holocaust’s horrifying history.
Opinion: Remember Holocaust by fighting anti-Semitism
Beth Bailey Published 10:30 p.m. ET Jan. 24, 2019 | Updated 1:59 p.m. ET Jan. 25, 2019 On International Holocaust Remembrance Day this Sunday, we are called to reflect on the history of the Holocaust, and remember that it was Nazi hatred and prejudice that led to the genocide of five million non-Jewish victims, including homosexuals, the disabled, Jehovah’s Witnesses, political and religious dissenters, gypsies, and Poles.
While Democrats dither over the border wall, deadly fentanyl floods our communities
On Christmas Day, 18-month-old Ava Floyd ingested “a large quantity” of fentanyl while her parents were producing and packing the potent drug for sale at their home in Clinton Township, Mich. That afternoon, Ava died at a local hospital.
Rashida Tlaib's Trump hatred has caused selective amnesia
Federal agents arrested three men at their condominium in Novi, Mich., in July 2017, resulting in the seizure of 88 kilograms of heroin, 10 kilograms of fentanyl, and more than $500,000 in cash. The men, one of whom hails from Sinaloa, Mexico, were part of an active network with links to a Mexican cartel that had infiltrated southeastern Michigan, and had ties to Maryland, Florida, Indianapolis, and Dallas.
Bernie Sanders had the strangest response to Trump's immigration address
On Tuesday evening, President Trump addressed the nation from the Oval Office regarding the “crisis of the heart and crisis of the soul” at our Mexican border.
The Time to Study the Holocaust is Now - and Always
2018 saw the most horrific – and deadliest – attack on Jews in US history when, on October 27, Robert Bowers killed eleven congregants at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. When police took Bowers into custody, he explained, “All these Jews have to die.” Shortly after Bowers’ attack, 2017 FBI crime data was released that showed hate crimes against Jews had increased 37 percent from 2016. This marked the third year in a row in which the percentage of anti-Jewish hate crimes had risen.
This Christmas season, mend your fences with charitable giving
In 2018, people of different political stripes were at each other’s throats over everything from the Central American caravans to ballot counting to the number of acceptable genders, and yet the National Retail Federation expects Americans to spend between $717.5 billion and $720.9 billion on retail sales this holiday season. Because what says “Sorry I called you a feckless idiot on Facebook” better than an air fryer? Well … a lot, actually.
Resist the 'resistance' by being careful where you shop
Despite a strong economy, an unemployment rate that sits at a 49-year low, and midterm elections that brought Democrats a majority of seats in the House, an atmosphere of progressive “resistance” continues to spread.
Opinion: Give conservative women some credit, please
OPINION Beth Bailey Published 11:00 p.m. ET Dec. 5, 2018 | Updated 11:18 p.m. ET Dec. 5, 2018 Barbra Streisand(Photo: Evan Agostini/Invision/AP) Singer and actress Barbra Streisand in a recent interview with the Daily Mail dredged up tired complaints about the ill-informed, jealous, or just plain stupid white women who did not vote for presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Sarah Silverman blames Trump for the spike in anti-Semitic crimes. Data show she's wrong
Since 2016, there has been a sudden outbreak of faux Holocaust historians, whose “facts” are divorced from their context and wielded for political gain.
On World War I Armistice anniversary, time for civilians to revive Veterans Day
This Veterans Day, we celebrate the centennial of the date from which our modern celebration gets its start: Armistice Day, and the end of World War I. With the passage of 100 years, our Veterans Day celebrations have evolved. Just as the solemn occasion of Memorial Day has been hijacked for barbecues and frivolity at the beach, many Americans mark Veterans Day as just another day off of work.
Political circus reaches peak insanity just before midterm elections
The early-voting numbers are in, and as of Saturday, they already surpassed numbers from the 2014 midterms. What does that mean for early voters? That they can sit by, unfazed, as the political circus continues. However, in just the past week, major news has broken that may have left early voters reconsidering. It has been discovered, for instance, that two of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s accusers fabricated part or all of their allegations against him.
No excuses: Stop the name-calling and reconcile with your political opponents
Suspicious packages containing explosive devices resembling pipe bombs were sent to the offices and homes of around half a dozen current and former high-ranking Democratic officials on Wednesday in what has been described as an “act of terror.” Americans have had a divided response to this news. Some have taken the opportunity to call for peace and unity, while others have perpetuated divisions by assigning blame for the attempted attacks to President Trump.
Hillary Clinton's trouble with truth: Bill Clinton's impeachment was never about sex
I was 11 years old when the impeachment process against former President Bill Clinton began, but the scurrilous details of his misbehavior did not go unnoticed. A slightly sanitized version of the unfolding drama is recorded in my school composition book from that time period. Twenty years have passed, and Clinton has recovered from his near fall from grace with little effort — until now.
Opinion: Conservative women keep receipts
Since the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh as the newest Supreme Court Associate Justice, the left has demonstrated the consequences should we continue to pursue politics and not cave to emotion-fueled protests. A Republican senator’s wife received a video of a beheading on her cell phone. A Minnesota elementary school teacher took her rage to Twitter, where she asked, “So whose [sic] gonna take one for the team and kill Kavanaugh?” Photographs of Sen.
Opinion: Stop using survivors as political pawns
I was sexually assaulted for the first time in the ninth grade by a boy who forcefully grabbed my genitals and made a foul remark while I swapped books at my locker between classes. I cried, not because he hurt me, but because I was shocked. In a matter of seconds, a thoughtless person had robbed me of the belief that my personal space was inviolable without my consent.
Opinion: 'Thank you for your service' falls short
Beth Bailey Published 10:35 p.m. ET Aug. 8, 2018 Bailey writes: "We need to celebrate this country’s true heroes: those who have given of themselves in service to us."(Photo: Pool, Getty Images) I have been listening to veterans’ stories since I was old enough to sit at a dinner table.

By the late 1960s, what had been widely heralded as the best qualified, best-trained army in US history was descending into crisis as the Vietnam War raged without end. Morale was tanking. AWOL rates were rising. And in August 1968, a group of Black soldiers seized control of the infamous Long Binh Jail, burned buildings, and beat a white inmate to death with a shovel.
