This has sparked debate over where the line should be drawn between free speech and the infringements of others’ rights, and the extent to which the University should, or can, intervene or take responsibility.
Sunak bans disposable vapes in the name of children's health
In one of the first new policy announcements of 2024, the government has announced it will seek to ban disposable vapes in the UK, in the name of ‘children’s health’. It is estimated that 9% of 11-15-year-olds vape either occasionally or regularly, although the number is likely to be higher. The measures announced also include means to reduce the marketing of vapes to children, in particular regarding the placement of them in shops and the bright colours and designs used.
Rishi Sunak’s English Baccalaureate: The Advanced British Standard
Rishi Sunak has a plan to overhaul the post-16 education system in Britain (or at least England, as education is devolved, which means that Sunak cannot enforce change in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland). The Prime Minister announced his first change – compulsory maths for students until they are 18. The policy that was criticised in many educational circles.
Is free speech under threat at university?
Cambridge professor, Arif Ahmed, the Director for Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom at the Office for Students (OfS) gave his first major address this month, following his appointment to the role in June of this year. In his speech, Ahmed asserted that the culture of suppressing free speech at English universities is a “serious cause for concern” and pledged to protect all views.
I suck at meditation
I suck at meditating… like really suck at it… to such an extent that meditation seemed to have the opposite effect than its intention. My mind has always been a monkey party, I can’t recall it ever being anything else. The issue was, I didn’t realise that it was this monkey party that was (almost) entirely to blame for my low mood, low motivation, and general outlook on life. It was why I struggled with almost every aspect of my life.
5 more appointments to expect with 22q
A few weeks ago, I told you about 5 appointments you could expect with 22q. There were 5 appointments that Enfys has attended in the last 2 years. I also said that those appointments were only the tip of the iceberg. Today, I’m giving you 5 more appointments you can expect to attend for 22q. Speech and Language difficulties are common with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome. For some children the difficulty could be physical, due to a cleft palate or other malformation.
Have you ever seen a hernia? - Beth in a Box
Up until last July, I hadn’t. Well unless you count Seren’s and Enfys’ umbilical hernias. But there was something different about them. They were tiny in comparison to this one. I have included photographs of my stomach in this post, complete with my tiger stripes and fat. If you’re squeamish or eating, don’t continue. A hernia that is caused by imperfect healing after abdominal surgery. Mine is courtesy of the emergency section with Anwen. It was a strange thing.
Blog Tour: Murder at Work - Faith Martin
It blog tour time again and it’s another Faith Martin DI Hillary Greene book. This is book 11 (out of 17) and Hill is feeling her age and due to retire shortly. She’s been avoiding big cases and winding down her workload in preparation… until Marcus Donleavy decides to throw her in the fire. Naturally, I don’t mean a literal fire… he practically forces her (with help) to take the next suspicious death that shows itself.
Welcome to The Cwtch - Creating a quiet space for an overstimulated child
Welcome to The Cwtch! It’s a corner of our family room that is dedicated to quiet time. It doesn’t matter whether the quiet time is to read, finish jigsaws or just to lounge around on a beanbag watching Netflix. It’s been designed with Macsen and Enfys in mind. Both have different needs, but both will benefit from it. The Cwtch has taken a lot of hard work and plenty of planning and it still isn’t complete yet. We have a tee pee and another beanbag to come.
