Beth Grosshans
Beth Grosshans’s Biography
Beth Grosshans has devoted her career to supporting families through the many challenges they face during their children's development. Raising children can be difficult, especially when children exhibit challenging behaviors that parents cannot understand or manage. These may include emotional outbursts, resistance to rules, and behaviors seen as demanding or disrespectful. Everyday activities, such as going to school or attending social events, can become overwhelming due to anxiety. Other challenges, such as sleep, eating, and toileting difficulties, often lead to children avoiding, refusing, or making excessive demands on their parents.
Understanding that these struggles are often complex, Dr. Grosshans has focused her work on providing parents with the knowledge and tools necessary to address such issues. She understands parents' frustration when trying to help their children develop key life skills like self-control, respect, cooperation, independent sleep, and healthy eating habits. Her mission is to offer practical, research-backed strategies that help families overcome these developmental and behavioral hurdles.
Beth’s academic journey began with a B.A. in Psychology from The University of Cincinnati. Driven to deepen her understanding, she continued her studies at Ohio State University, earning a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Clinical Child Psychology. Her extensive academic background provided her with the foundation needed to enter the professional world and make a meaningful impact on children's lives.
In the early stages of her career, Dr. Grosshans completed an internship at Boston Children’s Hospital and Judge Baker's Children’s Center. This pivotal experience allowed her to apply her academic training to real-world situations while receiving mentorship from leading experts at Harvard Medical School. It shaped her approach to understanding children's challenges and how best to support their emotional and behavioral growth.
In 1994, Dr. Grosshans began her private practice, where she encountered many children and families struggling with emotional and behavioral issues. Through this work, she observed a critical pattern many families face: the problem of power imbalances within the family unit. In particular, she found that when a child had disproportionate control over family decisions, it led to severe emotional and behavioral disorders. Dr. Grosshans coined this pattern as Imbalanced Family Power (IFP). She identified this dynamic as a root cause of many family struggles, and it became evident that it was not merely a temporary phase but a persistent challenge for families.
Dr. Grosshans developed a highly effective five-step strategy called The Ladder to Effectiveness to address this issue. This approach was designed to help parents re-establish healthy power dynamics and family leadership. The approach empowers parents to take charge in a way that restores balance and leads to more harmonious and functional family relationships. This method has proven highly successful, offering lasting solutions for many families struggling with disruptive behaviors.
Beyond her work in private practice, Dr. Grosshans has made significant contributions to the field of child development through her teaching and consulting. For over 15 years, she worked as an educator at the Princeton Center for Teacher Education, teaching Montessori educators nationwide. In this capacity, she played a vital role in shaping future teachers' education and professional development. Her teaching influenced many educators and helped them understand child development from a psychological perspective.
Dr. Grosshans' contributions also extended to her work with schools and treatment facilities. She was a consultant for many organizations, creating individualized treatment plans for mental health professionals working with children. Her consulting work allowed her to expand her influence and share her extensive knowledge with a broader audience, improving outcomes for children in various settings.
2008, Dr. Grosshans published her groundbreaking book Beyond Time Out: From Chaos to Calm. In this book, she introduced her concept of Imbalanced Family Power and provided parents with practical strategies for navigating difficult power struggles within their families. The book became an essential resource for parents looking to regain control of their family dynamics and create a more peaceful home environment. Its positive impact on families across the country speaks to the effectiveness of her approach and her deep commitment to improving family relationships.
Even after retiring from clinical practice, Dr. Grosshans has remained active in her field, continuing to write and speak on topics related to child development. She deeply understands parents' challenges when their efforts to help their children fail. Drawing from over two decades of experience working with families, she continues to help parents develop the skills they need to raise self-controlled, respectful, and cooperative children. Her work has left a lasting mark on countless families, equipping them with the tools and confidence to foster healthy family dynamics.
Dr. Grosshans’ legacy is one of dedication and impact, and her ongoing commitment to supporting families remains as strong as ever. She continues to be a trusted resource for parents, educators, and mental health professionals looking for effective strategies to help children thrive.
