Routt Commissioner Beth Melton: Explaining noxious weeds and why they’re such a problem
Before I was a county commissioner, when someone said the word “weed,” I assumed they were either talking about cannabis or dandelions. Now, I have served nearly a full term as a commissioner and personally completed the Colorado Master Gardener training program, and I have a whole new understanding about noxious weeds and why they are such a problem.
SB 230 works for county governments
On the final day of Colorado’s 2022 legislative session, lawmakers passed Senate Bill 230, entitled “Collective Bargaining for Counties.” We helped to support lengthy negotiations and numerous changes because we believe that collective bargaining is a fundamental right for all workers and we wanted to find a way to make it work for counties.

County Update: Why I will vaccinate my son against COVID-19

And yet, we are faced with tough decisions about exactly what that means. This has never been more apparent than in the COVID-19 pandemic. Can my kid play with his friends? Can she see her grandma? Is it better to be isolated from his peers or risk COVID-19 exposure at school? What about if she wears a mask?
County Update: A good place to start on climate change
Beth Melton For Steamboat Pilot & Today Let’s start with this premise: Climate change is real and human-caused, largely by the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation and increasingly intensive agricultural practices. Routt County Commissioner Tim Corrigan. Courtesy photo This change in our climate represents a very real threat to humankind’s continued existence on this planet.
County Update: Partnerships and best practices key to effective government
Beth Melton For Steamboat Pilot & Today Just this last week my fellow commissioners Beth Melton and Tim Redmond joined me in Vail, Colorado for the Colorado Counties, Inc. (CCI) annual summer conference. CCI is our statewide membership association offering assistance to county commissioners from across Colorado encouraging us to work together on common issues.
County update: Look how far we’ve come
Beth Melton For Steamboat Pilot & Today This has been a year of incredible challenges that has tested us all. We lost 20 of our community members to COVID-19. Many more have experienced the physical and mental effects of the pandemic. We made the greatest shared sacrifice we have ever been asked for outside of wartime. We had so many moments of uncertainty — our sense of optimism and hope rising and falling with the graphs showing the number of COVID-19 cases.
County Update: Looking forward to 2021 and beyond
Beth Melton For Steamboat Pilot & Today Beth Melton 2020 was unprecedented in so many ways. It has been extremely challenging for everyone, and Routt County’s resources have been narrowly focused on pandemic response – delaying and postponing projects so that we could respond to this emergency. All of us are looking forward to getting back to normal, and the Routt County Commissioners are looking to the future as we plan our topline priorities for 2021.
County Update: Comment on the Colorado Just Transition Plan
Beth Melton For Steamboat Pilot & Today In Routt County, not all of us always recognize the importance that coal plays in our community. The coal industry provides many high-paying jobs that have supported multiple generations of families, especially in Oak Creek and Hayden. The people who work in these jobs have done important, sometimes dangerous, work that keeps the lights on and the ski lifts running.
Opinion: Commissioners thank community members for their sacrifices
Tim Corrigan, Beth Melton and Doug Monger For Steamboat Pilot & Today Today, we write to you, valued members of our community, to say “thank you.” We are living through unprecedented times. There have been many unexpected events in our lifetimes, but it is hard to believe that anything comes close to the upheaval that has been created by the coronavirus. We, like all of you, feel frustrated and concerned about the future of our county and our country.
County Update: Our economic future
Beth Melton For Steamboat Pilot & Today What makes a strong economy? There are many factors, but today I want to talk about one critical aspect: careful management of local resources and assets. In Routt County, I think we can all agree that our primary assets our natural resources and the people who live and work here. Routt County is fortunate to have abundant natural resources — fossil fuels, water, forests and open lands.
From the Chamber: A healthy, sustainable economy for the future
Kara Stoller, John Bristol, Jason Lacy, Beth Melton and Cole Hewitt For Steamboat Pilot & Today STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — In case you haven’t noticed, over the last two years, our community’s economic development program has undergone a sea of change. It’s been redefined, reinvigorated and given new direction. It is now a highly collaborative, public-private partnership between Routt County, the city of Steamboat Springs and the Steamboat Springs Chamber.
County Update: Residents should play a role in safety
Beth Melton For Steamboat Pilot & Today Routt County plays a critical role of ensuring the safety of residents and visitors. The most obvious and visible is law enforcement through the Routt County Sheriff’s Office.
Thoughtful Parenting: Routt County early childhood plan update
Over the past five months, a diverse group of community members has come together to work on a plan for early childhood in Routt County. The purpose of this process, facilitated by the First Impressions Early Childhood Council, is to create a comprehensive early childhood community plan to identify needs and work on solutions for early childhood in Routt County. This is not a plan created by a group of outside consultants, but a plan that reflects the people of Routt County.
Beth Melton: An innovative leader for the future
The oldest of five kids from a working class family, I grew up on a farm in rural Washington. From a young age, I learned the value of a hard day’s work, a strict budget and a strong community. These things are as important to me today as they were to my family. I now manage millions of taxpayer dollars in my educational leadership role at Northwest Colorado Board of Cooperative Educational Services.
Thoughtful Parenting: National March into Literacy Month
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss was born March 2, 1904. In honor of his birthday, March is National March into Literacy Month. Dr. Seuss encouraged all to have fun with reading, and that's your role as a parent — to help your child develop a love for reading and an interest in language. The following are ideas about how to do that. Before they are born, children learn to tune into the sounds of language.

Thoughtful Parenting: Strength-based parenting
As parents, we want our children to be successful in school and in life, and it can become easy to focus on the things that they need to do to improve. But, research shows us that when parents instead focus attention on children's strengths — identifying and pointing out the things they do well — children are more engaged in school, they have an easier time interacting with friends, they experience less stress and they do better academically.
Thoughtful Parenting: What is dyslexia?
When your child struggles to learn to read, it can be difficult to sort through all the information you might receive from doctors, teachers and reading specialists. Following is a summary of the basics. There are many different phrases you may hear to describe a child's challenges with reading. Like many things, reading difficulties occur on a continuum. Children can struggle only a bit, or they can have significant difficulty learning to read.
Thoughtful Parenting: Learning to read
Learning to read is nothing short of a miracle. Our brains are not built for reading. Steven Pinker famously said, "Children are wired for sound, but print is an optional accessory that must be painstakingly bolted on." Our brains easily acquire the sounds of language through lots of exposure.
