A Guide to Support People Who Are Grieving On Mother's Day
I’m just going to say it, Mother’s Day sucks for some people. As this day approaches each year, a familiar feeling creeps over me. It initially appears as irritability and fatigue, but eventually reveals itself as my old friend, grief. I lost my mom suddenly in 2005, and later became a trauma therapist for children in the foster care system. These life experiences make me aware that not everyone wants to celebrate on Mother’s Day.

Are We Really Operating as Trauma-Informed?
As a trauma therapist, I would often fall into the role of trying to reduce unwanted behaviors in children to help the family, but it never worked. The behaviors we see in response to trauma are deeply uncomfortable for adults to witness, but this is not about us and our feelings. When caring for children with trauma, I believe our first priority is safety and trust, not behavior change.

Debunking the Kubler-Ross Five Stages of Grief
It's the middle of the night. My Nokia cell phone vibrates me awake somewhere under the covers, and I manage to locate it just enough to hit silent. A few moments later, the vibrating is present again. This time I look to see that it's my brother in a time zone three hours behind me, but it will have to wait until tomorrow. I'm just too sleepy. The third round of vibration begins. "Alright, I better answer this"…. Me: "Hello?" Brother: "Mom's dead! Mom's dead!" (Heaving and sobbing).
Understanding the Major Types of Therapy Used With Kids
Discovering that your child might need more help than you can provide can feel both scary and overwhelming. You might even feel caught off guard when you realize that your child has a mental health issue. What is Affirmation? Why You Need to Practice Affirmation Daily
What we all need right now, but are missing, is the ability within ourselves to find comfort within discomfort. In our culture, we’ve been taught that there are negative and positive emotions, and we should avoid anything that feels negative. But the reality is, all emotions serve a purpose. They were built into humans to provide information. With our world and safety in flux and any sense of “normal” a distant memory, positive affirmations can be a resource to help you find peace within discomfort.

In the U.S., we have a unique family constellation on the rise known as "grandfamilies". A grandfamily is any household led by a grandparent or relative out of necessity instead of choice. Grandfamilies are a by-product of childhood neglect, abuse, the opioid epidemic, incarceration, untreated mental health issues, and parental disability or death. According to Generations United, we have approximately 7.8 million children living in homes headed by grandparents or other relatives.
