Words by Nane Steinhoff Main photograph by Beth Watson/Ocean Image Bank Additional photograph by Jayne Jenkins/Ocean Image Bank Share Mantis shrimp are known for packing a powerful punch. With the force of a .22 caliber bullet, these colourful invertebrates can smash shells without hurting themselves.
9 Ways to Break Down Irish Genealogy Brick Walls
My research in Ireland has led me lots of places. I’ve climbed over iron fences, rusted farm gates, and stone walls to explore abandoned cemeteries in sheep fields and surrounding medieval churches. I’ve searched for relations and historians in pubs, restaurants, post offices, and even local nursing homes. And I’ve knocked on dozens of strangers’ doors—sometimes the wrong doors! But people happily pointed me in the right direction.
Hayley Ellis & Sally-Anne Hayward
Going to see comedians with no prior knowledge of their work is always a bit of a risk. But when I heard that Hayley Ellis and Sally Anne Hayward were both former Sarah Millican support acts, I relaxed into my seat a little. Unfortunately though, my sense of relief was short lived. While Ellisâ half provided a fun-packed hour of Northern charm, Haywardâs outdated material left me on edge.

A tour of LGBT history through the people that made it, Riot Act is a compelling one-man show that educates as much as it inspires. Performed verbatim from interviews with Michael-Anthony Nozzi, one of the only remaining Stonewall survivors; Lavinia Co-op, a 1970s London radical-drag artist; and Paul Burston, a prominent 1990s AIDS activist, Alexis Gregory provides us with 50 years of oral history, with music from each era signalling the change of persona. Educates as much as it inspires.

Vulvarine: A New Musical
Vulvarine is the superhero movie that all teenage girls were missing when they grew up. This mad musical comedy is the latest production from Fat Rascal, an incredibly talented group of âmovers, shakers and musical comedy makersâ whose inventive shows keep Fringe goers coming back year after year. And this year was no disappointment. Vulvarine was an explosion of colour, dance and feminist fun that left the crowd roaring with laughter.

Unmythable promised an âunforgettable blend of sketch comedy, cross-dressing, stories and songsâ but unfortunately, it didnât deliver. Perhaps the fact that âcross-dressingâ is being used as a selling point for a show in 2019 says it all. It seems the showâs writer is less concerned with making something unforgettable and innovative and more concerned with hammering through all of the Greek myths with a bit of pantoesque comedy.
10 Things I Hate About Taming of the Shrew
Gillian English hates The Taming Of The Shrew. She really hates it. In fact, sheâs not much of a fan of Shakespeare at all, actually, which is surprising considering she trained in Shakespearean theatre at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. But despite studying him rigorously in one of her two (or was it three?) arts degrees, she still spends an hour ripping the bard to shreds. His crimes? Misogyny, propaganda and just about everything in-between.

An adaptation of Joseph Conradâs The Secret Sharer, Geminus tells the story of a young sea captain who, after discovering a fugitive clinging to the side ship, embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Unlike Conradâs original short story though, Geminus explores the possibility of a same sex attraction between The Captain (referred to as Captain Hotson) and the fugitive Leggatt.
Sonia Aste: Made in Spain 2
Spanish comedian Sonia Aste is a woman of many talents. After starting her career in Silicon Valley, her work in AI has led her to travel all over the world and even master four languages. If that wasnât enough, she has now turned her hand to comedy. Following her sell-out show at Brighton Fringe 2018, her latest show Made in Spain 2 focuses on the âcultural differencesâ between Spain and the UK.

A play about murder, greed and unchecked rule, MacBeth is a play that never loses relevance. And, in a time when despotism seems to once again be on the rise, it is a fitting choice as well as a captivating one. Susanne Crosbyâs take on Shakespeareâs gruesome tragedy came alive in the Barn Theatre, where a stripped back venue was transformed into medieval Scotland. Suzi Ruffell - Nocturnal
After appearances on the likes of Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo, Suzi Ruffell has had a massive year. But, that doesn’t mean she hasn’t spent the whole time incredibly anxious. Touring Australia, she worried incessantly about tiny spiders, locked hotel doors and being kicked in the face by a kangaroo. In the Twittersphere, she’s kept up at night by the utterings of a homophobic troll. And in her own flat, she’s terrified of the weird guy who lives on the floor below.
Queen C*nt Sacred or Profane?
China Blue Fish and Deborah Antoinette first met at Bristol artist’s collective Co-resist where they bonded over a love of feminism, the environment and clowning (the two are both registered clowns). Queen C*nt, their irreverent and unpredictable sketch show, aims to 'unleash the power' of the C word and reclaim the female body. From the get-go the audience is treated to the pair’s wry take on femininity.
KoKo Brown: WHITE
The first of Koko Brown’s colour trilogy, White is an intimate portrait of growing up mixed race in the 90s and 00s. While fans of the poet might know her best for her spoken-word performances at events like Word Up and Sonar Sounds, Brown uses White to show the full breadth of her talents, as she skillfully employs the use of a vocal loop pedal.
