About Founded by Robin Wattie and Mathieu Ball in 2012, along with drummer Tasy Hudson, BIG|BRAVE continue explored terrains of experimental rock with a clear focus on the key principles; tension, space, volume, and raw emotion. Sounding many magnitudes bigger than one would suspect a trio is capable of, the essence of their magic has always been the way they balance these dynamics.
Almost exactly a year later, Canadian trio BIG|BRAVE returns to Bike Jesus. Their music is often described as monumental minimalism, while the potential of their work lies in their unique art combining elements of traditional folk techniques and modern guitar music deconstruction. Amplification, feedback and amplitude are as essential to the still-current album A Chaos Of Flowers as the lyrical content.
Sitting in a dimly lit, gentrified bar in a formally industrial area of Birmingham, ex Bloc Party and Young Legionnaire bassist Gordon Moakes is stressing his innocence during the period we’re now supposed to refer to as indie sleaze. “I took the sleaze out of indie if anything,” Moakes sheepishly claims as his new bandmates in noise rock supergroup The None playfully tease him that there have been “oddly few” Bloc Party fangirls at their shows.
Big Brave and Aicher will perform at Bike Jesus in Prague on May 14th. Big Brave achieve their colossal sound through minimalist approaches, a deft understanding of dynamics and an inventive employment of percussion and distortion. The trio reconceptualize what it is to be heavy or minimal, challenging perceptions with their illumination of painfully overlooked perspectives.
