Roosevelt’s Last Hunt
“The man should have youth and strength who seeks adventure in the wide, waste spaces of the earth, in the marshes, and among the vast mountain masses, in the northern forests, amid the streaming jungles of the tropics, or on the deserts of sand or of snow. He must long greatly for the lonely winds that blow across the wilderness and for sunrise and sunset over the rim of the empty world . . .

Arizona 2024 Elk Application Strategy By Andrew Gillett December is one of my favorite months of the year. Early in the month Arizona holds its late rifle bull elk hunts and by the end of the month we usually see the elk and antelope regulations for the next calendar year. This gives my analytical brain a feeding frenzy of data and imagined opportunities. This all culminates in January when Arizona will open the application period for 2024 elk and antelope hunts.
Reshuffle in civil servants, due to creation of new dept
Government is redeploying staff within the Civil Service to ensure that the Ministries are adequately staffed to effectively deliver on Government priorities. This was highlighted by the Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad in Parliament while responding on how Government is funding the new ministries and departments for which there was no specific budget allocation.

Fiji’s economy is projected to grow by 6.3 per cent in 2023 and moderate to 3 per cent in 2024, according to an economic report released by the Asian Development Bank. Junior Bula Boys to miss DFPL
The Junior Bula Boys will not be released to participate in Round 5 of the Digicel Fiji Premier League this weekend. Fiji Football Association chief executive Mohammed Yusuf said the players are in camp and need rest ahead of their departure to Gold Coast on 22 April. “The boys were released to play as part of their training earlier and they have been training regularly in the camp. To avoid any injuries, it is wise that they don’t play this week.

Hughes interested in Flying Fijians
Former England number eight Nathan Hughes wants to represent Fiji at this year’s Rugby World Cup. Playing professionally in Japan for the Ricoh Black Rams, Hughes has already reached out to new Flying Fijians Head Coach Simon Raiwalui. “Yes, 100 per cent,” Hughes told RugbyPass when asked if he was declaring his availability for Fiji. “The (Flying Fijian) coaches and their staff are all in Europe at the moment and I’m not sure when they will be coming to Japan. We’ll wait until the day comes.

Roosevelt’s Game Preserve
To a mountain range, time ticks by unnoticed. The Wichita Mountains of southwest Oklahoma stand steadfast, rising up like an island in a sea of prairie. These are old mountains—older than the mind can comprehend. Five-hundred million years, so say geologists. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge conserves a parcel of the mountains, some 59,000 acres, and all its wild residents. Granite, quartzite, and sandstone lie atop the craggy mountains, worn smooth by wind and rain and time.

In Love Again, with Kuhnert
"Growling Lions" is one of 500 Kuhnert paintings of lion. by Brooke Chilvers Each time we return to Tanzania – from 1994, when we were tasked with building a primitive safari camp in Tarangire Game Reserve, to our recent family photographic safari, where we were headache-free clients instead of stressed-out organizers – I fall in love all over again with German wildlife artist and hunter Friedrich Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865–1926).
On Safari with Grant Hacking
Posted on June 10, 2022 - Art, Big Game, Featured, Sporting Arts Big Five by Grant Hacking by Brooke Chilvers I wish I’d collected the T-shirts I’ve seen over the years of Africa’s Big Five species that picture an obviously Asian elephant and even a tiger. One, perhaps a leftover from the 1960s, included a bear, likely inspired from Bruno the Bear in the TV series Daktari, which takes place in an Americanized East Africa.
BIG GAME AND TEXAS HOOPS by The Hardge Knocks Life Texas Longhorns Podcast
Texas Basketball needs a Clean Up NFL HONORS/ HOF CLASS 2021 SUPER BOWL PREDICTIONS
Understand Your Limits, Recognize Opportunities, Know Your Equipment, Take Only Ethical Shots With three giant mule deer before me, I was faced with an ethical dilemma. The biggest had a high and wide rack. All told, I figured his numbers would probably tally around 190 inches. He stood and stretched at 85 yards. I admit that it was tempting, but I knew better. The second buck stood at 73 yards. He, too, was impressive. I practice at that distance a fair bit with accuracy.
The Goat And The Miner
The Rocky Mountains are a vast stretch of peaks that are young by geologic measure and by any other measure still raw and wild. The men who first journeyed here were the toughest of the tough: adventurers, explorers and trappers who plied the wilderness and hard-rock miners who lusted for gold. Strangely and by wild coincidence, I crossed paths with one of these men at a very critical moment in a hunt for a mountain goat.
Three Bears! - Sporting Classics Daily
Historians estimate that more than 700,000 prospectors rushed the Klondike gold fields. This photo from 1898 shows miners filing over Chilkat Pass on their way to strike it rich. Farther to the west, prospectors took the Dalton Trail over Chilkat Pass for access to the Yukon interior.
Lost In An Alaskan Blizzard
Looking above camp toward where we’d be hunting brown bears, all we could see was snow and mountains, not a tree in sight. The only thing that wasn’t white was an occasional rock sticking out of the blanket of snow. It should be pretty easy to spot a bear in all that white, I thought. Tyrell, my 30-year-old guide, and I had just settled into our base camp at the head of the Kipchuck river about 70 miles south of Aniak, Alaska. Little did we know that we’d be fighting for our lives the very next day.
Tiger Attack in Vietnam
As a Marine deployed to Southeast Asia 25 years ago, I had heard of tiger sightings in the bush and an incident where a Marine had been killed by one. I never ran across anyone, including intelligence people, who could verify this, as most unit reports were classified at that time as were maps. One day, however, I found the incident in Bruce Norton’s account of his time with 1st Force Recon. It is the only documented case of that attack I have seen.
Daniel Smith - Nothing Less Than Magic
“Let me show you some real cool sheep,” Daniel Smith says. He rifles through a stack of slides, pushes one of them across the light table, then hands me the loupe. Sure enough, it is a shot of a half-dozen magnificent bighorns bathed in late-afternoon light, each turning into the sun, apparently unaware of the cameraman — Smith — who is taking their picture. Very cool sheep. “I shot these in Jasper,” he says, beaming.
Leo Tolstoy and The Bear Hunt
A portrait of Count Tolstoy taken outside his home in lasnaia Poliana, circa 1908. Have you had summer in Moscow and St. Petersburg this year? “the bundled-up June tourist asked at the train depot as wind buffeted him and rain fell in torrents. “Yes, we have,” replied the local standing nearby.
Roland Burrows turned his boat out to sea and said, ”I’ll be back tonight at ten.” At mid-morning, I had a day of bear hunting before me. Up a rocky bank some twenty feet above high tide, fully aware of being alone, I watched him motor out of sight, then turned and studied my location. Southeast Alaska’s mountain-top islands look pretty much the same at shoreline and this cove must be remembered. I looked into a fairyland. Like jackstraws, giant trees lay strewn on the ground and across each other.
The Old Timer, Wandering Always Like The Wind
I have often sat, solitary, in twilight’s slow dissolution to gray, awaiting the unmistakable sound of hooves as they rustle their way through the dusk. It is a time of relentless solitude, and in the whispered vespers of the hemlocks, there is a fleeting sadness that draws me to things past.
Hunting Caribou in the Arctic - My Saudade River
The Portuguese have a term they call “Saudade.” It doesn’t translate well to English, but it connotes a deep longing for places, experiences and times that brought excitement and pleasure — a melancholy desire desperate to relive those experiences. The snow pellets glancing off the window take me back to another icy place, where the wind drove snow against a well-worn tent, perched on a little bluff above a rocky river in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
William Robinson Leigh - Artist of Enchantment
William Robinson Leigh was nearly 40 years old when he traveled to the Southwest in 1906. Disgusted and nearly destitute after ten years of trying to make a living painting in New York, he had accepted the invitation of a former classmate, Albert Groll, to visit him at Laguna, New Mexico. The Sante Fe Railroad made a good bargain when it gave him free passage in exchange for a future picture.
10 Best Hunting States Ranked

Deadly Botswana Cape Buffalo
As the source of his torment, you are but a puny bit of rubbish to be quickly and easily gored, stomped and otherwise ground into the hot African mud. The old bull, solitary by nature and belligerent by evolution, at first only considered your intrusion into his world a nuisance, an aggravation. But now you’ve shot him and really pissed him off. He’s waited for you, hurt, angry and vindictive. At your very sight he’s decided you’re history.

What’s in a Name?
Posted on October 21, 2021 - Art, Big Game, Featured, Featured Artist, Sporting Arts Calm on the East African Plains (1918) by John G. Millais by Brooke Chilvers I miss bookstores. Not mall bookstores with 50 shades of the same thing, but independent bookstores that carry obscure titles like Shakespeare and the Hunt or African Animals in Renaissance Literature and Art. That’s how I found The Eponym Dictionary of Mammals.
Mamba By Any Other Name
It was toward the last of his safari that it happened. Having successfully collected nearly every big game animal that he had come for, Jackson Taylor set out one afternoon on foot from camp with Shabani, the tracker, looking for guinea fowl.
Don't Sell Pronghorns Short!
Confession, at least in open form, is said to be good for the soul. With my particular soul being in dire need of the slightest good that might come its way, there is something I need to get off my chest. As a hunter, I’ve been ignoring pronghorns for many years. Since I live in Montana, that might come as a surprise, but opportunity for other species is the reason for the cold shoulder.
Trophy Room? Or House of Memories?
I have a trophy house. Built it myself from beetle-killed pines, lightning-struck oaks, storm-damaged yellow poplars and cedars. No viable trees were felled for this project. I sawed the downed timber into logs and loaded them onto a trailer – alone – by the old system of chain-and-cross-haul. Took them to a sawmill. And while one proficient in the building trades might suggest I limit myself to writing rather than carpentry, I am proud of the structure – this trophy house.
The Perfect Sous Vide Venison Backstrap
by Michael Pendley | Jun 30, 2021 | BIG GAME, HUNTING, LIFESTYLE, RECIPES | Hot water and a blowtorch? Yep, that is all you need to cook a perfect backstrap. Well, some butter and a few fresh herbs help it out, but this sous vide venison backstrap method produces a nice medium-rare backstrap with a perfectly seared surface. Set your butter out on the counter for a bit (if you don’t keep it there anyway), so that it will soften enough for mixing with the fresh herbs.
A Way to Hunt During the Offseason
Summer, the hunter’s offseason, is in full swing, and many—maybe even most—sportsmen have stuck the rifle in the safe and grabbed the golf bag out of the garage. Bows have been hung on their hooks and new line has been wound on fishing reels. I’ve wet a hook or two myself, but by and large, my offseason is reserved for another pastime. The offseason, for me, is a time for dreaming.
Bearing Burdens in My Hunting Journal
It doesn’t always happen on the first sit. Sometimes it takes a few days, maybe even a couple of weeks. One year, my kids were picking out their Halloween costumes before it happened, but I generally feel it before fall’s first frost. Peace. Perspective. I climb into a tree, clip the strap of my safety harness into its carabiner, and the worries of my world just slough off like a second skin. This year, it took longer than it ever has before to find that peace.
The Final Charge: Roosevelt's Bull Moose
In the fall of 1915, 57-year-old Theodore Roosevelt went big game hunting for the last time. It would prove to be one of the strangest hunts he’d ever experienced. TR had been invited by his friend, Dr. Alexander Lambert, to hunt in Quebec, Canada, where they would be based at the Tourilli Club, which offered hunts for eastern bull moose, caribou and beaver. They had two guides, Odilon Genest and Arthur Lirette, who were both familiar with the Lake Croche area.
Endless Skyway, Golden Valley: 23 Stunning Photos of Public Land

Those opposed to the legislation fear that states, if one day given these properties, will sell them in times of financial strain, restricting them from public access forever thereafter.
Bodo Meier, the Artist Who Takes Artists to Africa
Posted on May 13, 2021 - Art, Big Game, Featured, Featured Artist, Sporting Arts Elephants Drinking from the Chobe River by Brooke Chilvers I first met watercolorist Bodo Meier on a snowy night in the dead of winter, over a table laden with red-deer ragout, potato dumplings, and red cabbage. Yet all the talk was of Africa. Already, by the time we met in 2013, Bodo had made numerous trips to East Africa, starting in 1996.

Portrait of a Poacher
Kathy Spengler needed to paint a picture. Not a paint-by-numbers type portrait, but one that had to be closer to a masterpiece – the portrait of a poacher. A special agent with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Office of Law Enforcement based in Wilsonville, Oregon, in 2018 Spengler inherited an ongoing wildlife poaching investigation. There were numerous parts and pieces of evidence that reached back many years, and the potential crime scene covered thousands of acres of rough, remote terrain.
