Why did Bowe take such beatings from Golota?
Listening to Bowe slur with a few years of his trilogy was enough to know his body didn't recover. Aries Spears cracked a bad joke about Bowe, by impersonating, really bad, but he had the words exact. Instead of saying "as long as I do what I'm supposed to do" He said "As long as do what im po'd ta do" Then listen to him first fight post- interview he could enunciate rather well. @reckless I think its 3 things; 1. Golota was a pretty good boxer. Not great, but better than average. 2.
Riddick Bowe v.s. Oliver Mccall & Hasim Rahman
Ali Frazier said: ↑ I think Bowe wins a good decison against McCall. A Bowe defense against a then-hot Oliver McCall was mooted after he blew out Jesse Ferguson, but never came about. Both men were in such good form at the time, i think its impossible to predict what might happen. Like Bowe/Lewis, its hard to visualise how it would of played out. Bowe had a solid chin and wouldn't be vulnerable to getting bombed out like Lewis or Seldon. And McCall never 'outboxed' anybody . .
Harry Greb vs Jack Dempsey
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Big Ukrainian, . It's kind of a weird match, but we've seen even more strange fights. Jack Johnson vs middleweights outweighed by 40 lbs, or Jack Sharkey vs Walker, or Tommy Loughran vs Carnera, and 'small' guys gave the bigger opponents really tough, tough fights. So what if middleweight king Garry Greb fought Jack Dempsey for the HW crown? Your opinions guys. I think Greb would be making a huge mistake to enter the ring with Dempey. It's too dangerous.
Winky Wright vs Erislandy Lara @ 154
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Flo_Raiden, . Between the 2 tricky defensive southpaws who do you favor in this fight? Would a prime Wright be able to handle the slick movement of Lara? Both fought Paul Williams, although Wright was already past it and Lara was straight up robbed. Either a nice chess match or an incredibly dull borefest. I don't know, but I think Winky lost to all of the notable southpaws he fought (Vasquez and Williams).
Harold Johnson's resume
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by mr. magoo, . Johnson won five world title fights.. He also beat guys like Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Eddie Machen, Jimmy Bivens, Nino Valdez, Arturo Godoy, Doug Jones, Clarence Henry, and Bob Satterfield. Not too many resumes that are better or deeper than that. Flo_Raiden, Reinhardt, Seamus and 1 other person like this.
Michael Moorer vs Michael Spinks at 175 and at HW
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Big Ukrainian, . Who was better at 175? At HW? Better puncher? Better skills? Better chin? Who would've won at LHW and at HW? Your opinions Smoochie, Saad54 and Muhammed_Ali_Durmaz like this. Better puncher? Moorer Better skills? - Spinks Better chin? - Spinks Who would've won at LHW and at HW? - Spinks at light heavy. Heavy is a tossup but leaning towards Moorer. Greg Price99 and Flash24 like this. mr. magoo said: ↑ Better puncher? Moorer Better skills?
Jack Sharkey vs Max Baer
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Big Ukrainian, . Who would've won if they both were at their best? Either Baer would knock out Sharkey late, or Sharkey would win a wide points decision, and then weep hysterically. Mr.DagoWop and he grant like this. I'll take Sharkey provided it's prime versus prime. Sharkey could box, he outpointed Godfrey and would have stopped Wills, had Wills not fouled himself out.

Tim Witherspoon vs Alexander Povetkin

Fighters who were great in rematches
Miguel Canto: - Had a draw and a split-decision win in two ten-rounders against Ignacio Espinal before beating him in a wide, uncontested UD when Espinal challenged for the title (one of the two ten-rounders is controversial in the DR, although I don't remember which) - Lost his first world title fight to Betulio Gonzalez but then defeated Gonzalez in two subsequent championship fights - Went 3-0 against Shoji Oguma, but the first win (MD) was extremely close, the second (SD) was...
Anyone else think Holmes beat McCall in 95?
Holmes didn't arguably beat McCall. McCall deserved the decision. And Holmes didn't need a gift decision over Axel Shulz. But Holmes did need a gift decision over (9-8-2) Maurice Harris. George Foreman fought much better competition than Holmes did in his comeback and George won the "World" title. Both fought Holyfield. (Foreman fought him first. Foreman actually hurt Holyfield in their fight, and Evander was clinching trying to run out the clock at the end.
Heavyweight FOTW #10: Terrible Tim Trio (Snipes/Mercer/Williams)
Witherspoon vs Snipes I cannot ever remember a ref telling a guy to fight...fight Renaldo come on throw some punches lol. I also got a draw, but got there a different way, due to lack of action and an ugly mesh of styles I think each guy won 3 rounds pretty clearly, but those other 4 rounds are fairly hard to determine. I can see 6-3-1/5-3-2 for either guy or anything in between, with no argument from me.
Lennox Lewis vs. Tony Tucker
tbh, if Lewis hadn't knocked Tucker down those two times, I would have called the fight a draw Last edited: May 20, 2020
Andrew Golota vs. Nicolai Valuev
Golota at 6-4 would be sacrificing about 8 or 9 inch in height, and about 70 to 80lbs in weight, And a lot more in mental strength, and he Can't handle pressure OR adversity to save his life.. Valuev wouldn't even be seriously hurt in this fight, he had a chin of stone, and would either win by KO in the mid rounds, or by DQ, when Andy decides to use the giants nuts as a speed bag, either way Valuev wins..
Is Jimmy Bivins run from 1943-1945 one of the best ever?
For straters you just proposed Bivins size advantage was a factor in the win over Moore, and that size advantage was a HW weight. 1. 7 out of 11 opponents were HWs when Bivins fought them. -Maxim 178, RING #10 HW -Bettina 185 1/2 last rated as RING #4 HW -Lee Murray 202 lbs RING #3 and #6 HW -Lee Savold 195 -Bob Pastor 184,183 RING #3 HW -Tami Mauriello 180, 187 RING #2 HW -Pat Valentino 184 2. I don't care how boxrec classifies him. Hardly definitive. 3. 177 is still HW.
Prime Povetkin vs
Povetkin survives Shavers' best and stops him later on. He could outbox Ruddock, but it's a dangerous bout. 55-45 Povetkin. Povetkin stops Tommy mid-rounds. Tua's pressure is a threat and he had a very good chin. Povetkin at his best could win a decision, but it's 50-50 imo. Povetkin likely beats Haye and probably stops him. I thought he would back when both were at their best too. I think the two toughest potentially are Ruddock and Tua, but it's possible that Alexander could beat them all.
Anthony Joshua has a great chin
I never thought WK had a bad chin, not granite but still respectable. Certainly intact enough at 41 to survive that hellacious uppercut that as you say totally finished off Whyte. He was still able to defend himself at the end too, slightly early stoppage. I think if he got to the bell he'd have recovered to make the 12th another war.
Frank Bruno vs Herbie Hide.
pablod said: ↑ Be a good fight hide was definitely explosive and was faster, plenty of flair and could move. Bruno was much bigger physically and had a nice tidy defence, very heavy hands and a banging jab. Hide could definitely slip one through Bruno's defence at any given moment and hurt big frank, who did seem to freeze when stunned, maybe even flatten him but Bruno could equally move forward behind that hard jab and big arcing right and break the much lighter herbie up. so 2 scenarios I think.
Jesse Ferguson Discussion
I've watched many of his fights recently. Douglas - it was an even fight which could've gone either way. The scores were too wide. Douglas almost knocked Jesse out at the end of the 1st with fantastic uppercut. A very good win. Mercer 1 - Ray underestimated Jesse, and Ferguson won easily, 98-92 IMO. Another good win. Mercer 2 - Mercer in excellent shape, motivated. IMO Ray won 96-93, action-packed fight. Bowe - Ferguson was in great shape, but prime Rid**** was too much for him.
Who was better: Tex Cobb or Ossie Ocasio?
Big Ukrainian said: ↑ Cobb looked unskilled and slow, but he somehow won against good opponents (Shavers, Mercado) and gave tough fights to much more talented fighters than him (Norton, Buster Douglas, Dokes twice).
Sonny Liston vs George Benton sparring
InMemoryofJakeLamotta said: ↑ I heard a sparring story in which Liston, either right before or right after he became the heavyweight champion, he sparred top middle weight contender George Benton. The story was, Benton was moving so fast that Liston went whole rounds without being able to land anything, while Benton was landing about everything he threw. Liston started to get angry and really trying to hurt Benton, so Benton's manager stopped the session.
Ray Mercer vs Tim Witherspoon - who won the war?
I agree with Harold Lederman's cards 95% of the time. The fight was close. I think Witherspoon edged it, but a draw would have been fine. The judges sucked. All three had Mercer in the lead by 4-6 rounds. Terrible. Their cards were: Judge: Calvin Claxton 93-97 Judge: John Poturaj 93-97 Judge: Paul Venti 91-97 A few points. 1 ) Witherspoon was past his prime. He's the better fighter. Compubox numbers : Witherspoon landed 280 punches of 471 (59 %), Mercer landed 255 punches of 528 (48 %).
Trevor Berbick vs Gerry Cooney
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by mr. magoo, . At their best and let’s say 10 rounds. What do you think ? Great post. I've wondered off and on how this would turn out, and it would be no yawner for sure. Cooney dominates the early rounds, Berbick sweeps the last rounds, and there's a lot of see-sawing in between. Both hit hard, but Cooney's power seemed to go into effect much quicker. I would say for sheer stamina and durability that Berbick wins a decision.
Ray Mercer: Best I Faced
From Ring TV: In the early 1990s, Ray Mercer was regarded as one of the best heavyweights in the world. Owner of one of the most durable chins in the division, as well as fight ending power, he was capable of giving the very best a tough outing. Mercer was born in Jacksonville, Florida on April 4, 1961. His father was in the military and served in Vietnam. “We had a good life; we lived the military life,” Mercer told The Ring. “We traveled overseas, we lived in Germany when I was 15.
Greatest South African boxers
I was recently doing some research on South African boxers. I don't know if he was THE BEST, but the most popular South African boxer in the 1970s (and maybe ever) was Elijah "Tap Tap" Makhathini. Makhthini was featured regularly on South African boxing telecasts. When the country finally got a national television station (that could be viewed by the whole country) in the mid '70s, he became the most popular television fighter in his country, among both whites and blacks.
Dwight Qawi vs James Toney
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by heizenberg, . One of the very best match ups I think could be made. Two badass old school masters of boxing. Toney with his great defense and counter punching against Qawi's relentless yet skillful and strategic attack. Both guys had a tone of tricks up there sleeves and were true fighters. How do you see this one playing out had they met in there primes at light heavyweight or cruiserweight?
Why Is Your Favorite Fighter Your Favorite Fighter?
Evander Holyfield. And the story. The 1st fight I've ever watched was Holyfield-Cooper fight. Not only it was a great fight, but Holy also tore his right glove with numerous uppercuts to the Cooper's head. I remembered this moment especially. And the 2nd fight I've ever watched was Holy vs Bowe rematch, also a great fight. And a Fan man in the middle of the fight, another interesting event. You know, Holy was involved in so many legendary events through his career, it's hardly believable.
Lennox Lewis v. Tim Witherspoon
Lewis deserves a better chance against Witherspoon than Bowe does. I believe Bowe is not so distinguishable between the whole 1980s rabble of belt holders that include Witherspoon. Lewis is But a tad higher because of his resume, his effort to face everyone, better condition, the extra guys he beat and the fact he wound up reversing his two losses. But that’s not to say Bowe or Witherspoon and the rest of the 1980s weight whatchers gang were bad fighters.
Oleg Maskaev Appreciation Thread
Boxed Ears said: ↑ Now, here's a story about Oleg Maskaev. In the early 1990's, he ran down to New Orleans, and I saw him at a big tollgate down there, you know. The light shone in his eyes like a reflection of God on a small, Mexican woman's toaster. I could tell he was hot, so hot, with anticipation and furious anger. As he picked up steam, he told the tollgate man he had livestock, Russian mules, etc, all livestock.
Gary Mason vs. Frank Bruno
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by William Walker, . Isn't interesting that these two never matched up? I'm pretty confident about the outcome, but still think it would be a real hectic fight. I predict a quick knockdown in round 1 by Mason followed by a Bruno onslaught. Bruno's attacks quickly die down within a round or two, and Mason punishes him before stopping him in the 7th. No way it would make it longer. InMemoryofJakeLamotta, LoadedGlove and The Morlocks like this.
90s Heavyweight match up: Riddick Bowe vs Shannon Briggs
Bowe hit harder than Lewis?? Not sure about that. I'm sure Holyfield personally liked Bowe better than Lennox, and also had a victory over Bowe. So that might have played into him saying Bowe hit harder. Bowe v.s Briggs would be action packed. A brawl wouldn't take too long to break out, but Bowe puts him away in 5-6. Bowes chin would survive the early storm and his size, strength and superior skills would put Briggs on his face or a*s eventually. Bowe tko 5 or 6
Shannon Briggs vs Herbie Hide
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Eye of Timaeus, . Two big punchers but Briggs could take them better then Hide so I'm going with Briggs to finish this early. Thoughts? Briggs would lay Hide out. Gatekeeper and Heisenberg like this. Hide was the better boxer, better mobility and speed. But Briggs was too durable and powerful for him, stopping the "better fighter" imho. Thats were power*chin-level comes into play.
Francois Botha's Training Regimen (Prime)
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Seamus, . Anyone have insights on his training regimen around the time of the Moorer fight? Been trying to contact Soderstrom to no avail. I need this for the final part of my doctorate thesis. National Geographic did an article on this in the 90's. You should be able to find it on microfilm in the library. Unforgiven and Big Ukrainian like this. It was modern as ****. Very modern. Very feel. Nutrition was good. Poolside. BBQ. Roids. Spar. Rest. Watch the Rugger.
