Australia and Korea's underdeveloped strategic relationship needs substance
Despite periodic claims by political leaders in both Australia and Korea, neither government has capitalised on commonalities and shared interests to build a deeper and more strategic partnership. Australians are struck by Koreas expressions of gratitude for our role in the Korean War, and often see this as providing the underpinning for a close relationship today.

CRITICAL MINERALSSouth Korea’s Demand for Critical Minerals Published 4 March 2024 Korea’s geostrategic situation feeds a sense of strategic and economic insecurity—it is close to an assertive China prepared to demonstrate displeasure by imposing costly economic coercion measures, while the ever-present threat from North Korea drives the south’s priorities for military resilience, including a hi-tech military industry.
South Korea’s demand for critical minerals
In December 2021 the then president of the Republic of Korea, Moon Jae-in, made a largely unexpected working visit to Australia, at the end of his term, and at unusually short notice. Media speculation was that the visit was all about China, given that both Australia and Korea had been subjected by China to costly economic coercion measures, and China’s aggressive actions continued to provoke concern in both countries. The speculation was partially right, the visit was about China.
Will Australia’s defence relationship with Korea be a casualty of the DSR?
The government’s decisions to shrink or cancel previous choices on the acquisition of armour may well be appropriate to Australia’s changing strategic circumstances. Fast, agile, easily deployable and long range, armour is not. But there is potentially a significant strategic casualty from the decisions that followed the defence strategic review: Australia’s defence reputation with a key regional partner, the Republic of Korea.
My View: Because of Damar Hamlin, I finally know the score
Damar Hamlin took a poor angle on a play and missed his assignment, allowing the Bengals to gain big yardage. Reflexively, I hurled an explosion of curses at the TV. This is how overly invested in winning a Super Bowl I have been for 40 years of being a Buffalo Bills fan. Bill Paterson, of Amherst A few minutes of game time later, Hamlin lay motionless on the field receiving CPR. All of us at home and in the stadium struggled to process the scene, a sinking feeling slowly taking hold.
South Korea seeks closer strategic links with Australia
Little noticed publicly in either Australia or South Korea, Seoul has taken steps in recent months that suggest intent to forge closer strategic links with Canberra. The trend has accelerated under Korea’s new administration and should be factored in to Australia’s defence strategic review as an opportunity to strengthen our regional security and economic relationships.
