Chicago Cubs: 5 guys on postseason teams who are a perfect fit
(Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images) Use your ← → (arrows) to browse Carlos Rodon (Photo by Ron Vesely/Getty Images) We don’t have the luxury and beauty of Chicago Cubs playoff baseball this year, and while it might be a necessary evil to push the button on a bit of a restart, it doesn’t have to last. To that end, there are players who are or were on the rosters of postseason teams who have already proven they can be winning ballplayers and contributors on successful teams.
Chicago Cubs: 5 bold moves to turn the team into World Series contenders
(Photo by Denis Poroy/Getty Images) Use your ← → (arrows) to browse (Photo by Nuccio DiNuzzo/Getty Images) What if I told you that the Chicago Cubs would have a chance to be really good in 2022 by making just five moves? You’d probably think I was crazy, but it’s true. And, to be honest, it’s a completely plausible if tremendously bold set of moves that would mostly just cost the Ricketts family some money.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (10/2/21): Cubs 6, Cardinals 5 - Happ Bomb Gives Cubs Win in 9th
Ian Happ sent the Cards fans home unhappy with his two-out 9th inning blast to put the Cubs on top for good 6-5 on Saturday night at Busch Stadium. The Cubs only scored on two hits, but boy oh boy were they big ones. Trayce Thompson went deep for the second night in a row as he started the Cubs scoring with a bang on a 5th inning grand slam off old buddy Jon Lester.
3 Chicago Cubs players who will be back in the mix in 2022
(Photo by Quinn Harris/Getty Images) While there are sure to be some free agent signings and wheeling and dealing by Jed Hoyer this offseason, it’s a good bet that a few of your favorite September (and October) Chicago Cubs will still be playing with the team in 2022. We know that won’t be the case for all 67 of the guys the Cubs have used this season, but there’s reason for hope for a few of the bright spots amongst the new-look end of summer North Siders.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (10/1/21): Cardinals 4, Cubs 3 - Walk-Off Opens Final Series
Despite a nice outing from Cory Abbott in his first big league start, the Cardinals went to work on building another streak, winning 4-3 on a Paul Goldschmidt walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th at Busch Stadium. Both team’s starting pitchers, Abbott and Dakota Hudson, went five strong innings in this game without figuring in the decision. Abbott did give up two early bombs to a red hot Tyler O’Neill in the 1st and 4th, but limited damage to just that and kept his team close.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/24/21, Game 2): Cardinals 12, Cubs 4 (Final/7) - Red Hot Redbirds Sweep DH
It wasn’t a good day for Cubs pitching as Friday night saw the Cardinals continue the offensive explosion they started in the afternoon game to sweep the split doubleheader at Wrigley Field. There wasn’t a ton to get excited about as a Cubs fan and even less to celebrate after Patrick Wisdom’s 1st inning bomb pulled the Cubs to within 3-2 after Zach Davies gave up a bunch early.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/18/21): Brewers 6, Cubs 4 - Happ, Contreras Hit Bombs in Loss
Despite some clutch hits, the Cubs dropped their fourth straight and second in as many nights to Milwaukee in an exciting back-and-forth game that ended up 6-4. The Cubs hadn’t had much luck against Corbin Burnes in two previous starts and did strike out 11 times again in this one, but they were scrappy and scratched together three runs against him. After Justin Steele spotted the Brew Crew one early tally on a Manny Piña solo shot, the Cubs went to work on Burnes.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/17/21): Brewers 8, Cubs 5 - Bullpen Falters as Cubs Drop Third Straight
Despite getting out to a four-run lead in the 4th inning, Cubs pitchers kept walking batters and giving up hits until the Brewers had secured an 8-5 win in Milwaukee. Things started out well as the Cubs knocked starter Adrian Houser out of the game after just four innings by being patient and putting the ball in play. Ian Happ started off the inning with a walk and was pushed to second by a Patrick Wisdom single.
Will the Chicago Cubs trade Kyle Hendricks, Willson Contreras and Ian Happ?
(Photo by Jon Durr/Getty Images) Use your ← → (arrows) to browse (Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images) If Chicago Cubs fans thought the agony of the deadline fire sale was over, they may want to just hold off on going out and grabbing their new favorite player’s jersey until this offseason is over and the 2022 season is underway. Heck, it may last a little longer than that, but patience is a virtue, right?
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/7/21): Reds 4, Cubs 3 - Winning Streak Ends at Seven Following Narrow Loss
Despite a feeling that the Cubs would come back in the late innings once again, the magic of the post-deadline ball club came to an end as the Reds held on for dear life to earn a 4-3 victory at Wrigley Field. Cubs’ starter Adrian Sampson spotted the Reds a 2-0 lead after three hitters, allowing solo shots to both presumptive NL Rookie of the Year Jonathan India and former Cub favorite Nicholas Castellanos.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (9/8/21): Cubs 4, Reds 1 - Heyward Walk-Off Bomb in 10th Seals Victory For Cubs
If you were disappointed in the loss last night ending a seven-game winning streak, you didn’t have to wait very long for the Cubs to get right back on the horse again. Jason Heyward crushed a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Cubs a dramatic 4-1 win at Wrigley. Both Alec Mills and Vladimir Gutierrez yielded just one solo home run apiece, while both bullpens kept the other lineup off the board through nine innings.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/28/21): Cubs 7, White Sox 0 - Wisdom Birthday Bash Extended as Mills Twirls Gem
Winning has become a somewhat arduous task of late for the Cubs, but they’ve found interesting new ways to provide some entertainment to even the most crestfallen fans. On Saturday night in the Crosstown Cup on the Southside, the Cubs gave what’s left of the fans watching their games a rare win as they shut out the Sox 7-0. Following the fire sale at the deadline, some of these new regulars have become the new “big” names.
How high of a draft pick could the Chicago Cubs nab next season?
(Photo by Stacy Revere/Getty Images) Sure, this may seem like a silly sentiment seeing as the Chicago Cubs have gutted their squad and have done their best to emulate the Cleveland Indians from Major League, but there is still a chance for the Cubs to win some ballgames in the same fashion as what went down Saturday night. They’ve got some interesting and productive players despite the deluge of losses, and those players are all that stands between the Cubs and a higher draft pick in 2022.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/27/21): White Sox 17, Cubs 13
If you tuned into Friday night’s installment of the Crosstown Classic between the Cubs and White Sox, you were treated to quite the resplendent offensive feast as the teams combined to score 30 runs. The Cubs wasted no time getting to work and the Sox responded in kind as both teams traded runs throughout the game.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/25/21): Rockies 13, Cubs 10 - Happ Homer Sends Nightcap to Extras, Rox Prevail in 10th
After winning the first game of the doubleheader and playing even for nine innings in the nightcap, the good times came to an end with the Rockies beating the Cubs thanks to a Ryan McMahon blast to win 13-9 at Wrigley Field. What should have been a 7-inning affair looked like it might stay that way as both Justin Steele and Germán Márquez were chased early. Ultimately, the game was won in extras as the Rockies outlasted the Cubs in a long but fun day at the Friendly Confines.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/17/21): Cubs 2, Reds 1 - Hendricks Helps Cubs Stop Streaking
It isn’t going to make everyone happily forget the fire sale at the trade deadline that sent away all their favorite players, but the Cubs actually won a game 2-1 against the Reds. The narrow victory ended a 12-game streak of futility that had many legitimately wondering if the Cubs would ever win again. While some may be mildly annoyed by the win given the Cubs’ growing chance at a top-5 draft pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, there’s still plenty of time for more losses.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/16/21): Reds 14, Cubs 5- Another Game, Another Blowout
After their 12th loss in a row, it would be easy to say the Cubs are actively trying to do as poorly as possible for a better draft slot. However, even in the wake of a 14-5 drubbing at the hands of the Reds at Great American Ball Park, I just can’t say that because these guys are doing what they can and fighting till the end. If you’re looking for silver linings, Justin Steele was actually not too shabby in his second start for the Cubs.
5 reasons the fire sale was actually serendipitous for the Chicago Cubs
(Photo by Nuccio DiNuzzo/Getty Images) Use your ← → (arrows) to browse (Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports) It’s hard to turn waste into gold and it’s tough to find excitement in what the Chicago Cubs did to their club at the trade deadline (and prior to) just a few weeks ago. Just 1-14 in August since the trade deadline dust settled, the Cubs are officially a really bad team.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/13/21): Marlins 14, Cubs 10
The night started and ended with a ton of promise for the Cubs, yet the Marlins were still able to prevail in Miami thanks to an ugly 11-run 2nd inning. This was probably the most exciting game the Cubs have played since the trade deadline and it almost felt like you weren’t watching the same team that has lost nine in a row and 15 of 17 since July 26. Alas, it’s still a squad devoid of big names, and most of those playing roles right now probably won’t even be on the team next year.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/11/21): Brewers 10, Cubs 0- Arrieta, Offense Continue to Struggle Mightily in Embarrassing Loss
There was very little to cheer for or get excited about in Wednesday night’s Cubs-Brewers matchup as Corbin Burnes absolutely dominated the Cubs en route to a 10-0 Milwaukee victory. Burnes was nasty, the Cubs’ bats continue to be anemic, and Jake Arrieta was ineffective yet again. Arrieta surrendered seven runs before the offense even started thinking about hitting, which is a sure sign of a loss with the lineup the Cubs are currently deploying.
What is the ceiling for a retooling Chicago Cubs team in 2022?
(Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images) In the midst of the dreariest and most morose Chicago Cubs baseball in about nine years, there’s gotta be hope for the future, right? Team president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer’s word choice in this latest teardown may be just the hope that some are looking for, even if the trust in the Cubs’ head decision-maker is a bit lacking of late (or in general).
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (8/8/21): White Sox 9, Cubs 3- Former Farmhands Continue to Haunt Cubs as Sox Sweep
You’d be forgiven if you turned the game off after the top of the 2nd inning as the White Sox jumped out to a 7-0 lead early and finished off the weekend sweep over the Cubs with a 9-3 victory. Cubs starter Zach Davies wasn’t good and lasted just two innings, coughing up home runs to Tim Anderson, old farmhand friend Eloy Jiménez, and Andrew Vaughn in the 1st inning. Davies then surrendered a two run double to Jiménez in the 2nd.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/31/21): Cubs 6, Nationals 3- Kyle Hendricks Still Wearing Cubs Uniform, Winning Ballgames
Even after Friday’s devastating teardown, the Professor, Kyle Hendricks, is still throwing baseballs for the Northsiders. And tonight he led them to a 6-3 victory over the equally demoralized Washington Nationals. The Cubs got a vintage Hendricks performance over seven innings, with the only run coming on a ball that Ian Happ should have caught off the bat of Yadiel Hernandez in the 1st inning.
Chicago Cubs: Javier Baez, Anthony Rizzo making friends in the Big Apple
(Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images) If there’s one sentiment most Chicago Cubs fans can agree upon in the aftermath of Black (and not so Blue) Friday, it’s that Javier Baez, Anthony RIzzo and Kris Bryant are guys we’ll cheer for regardless of the color of their pinstripes or what number they’re wearing. And now, these guys will have a lot more people cheering for them when you add the fans in their new cities, especially if they continue scorching hot starts.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/27/21): Reds 7, Cubs 4 - Votto Beats Cubs With Bat, Glove, Arm
Despite a valiant and nearly dramatic rally in the bottom of the 9th, the Cubs dropped a tough one to the Reds 7-4 at Wrigley Field Tuesday night. Adbert Alzolay wasn’t sharp, but did get through five innings while giving up three solo shots and a Kyle Farmer RBI single. Joey Votto was rough on Alzolay, hitting two solo home runs, and fellow lefty slugger Jesse Winker added the third off the right-hander as his struggles with keeping balls in the park (especially to lefties) continue.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/26/21): Cubs 6, Reds 5 - Báez Walks it Off Against Nemesis Amir Garrett
In a game where Kyle Hendricks didn’t have his best stuff, the Cubs found a way to claw their way back into the game. For the second night in a row, “Bryzzo” used the long ball in the first inning of the ball game, this time Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run bomb to drive in Kris Bryant and stake the Cubs to an early 2-0 lead against Reds’ starter Wade Miley.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/10/21): Cardinals 6, Cubs 0- Dreary Weather, Dull Performance at Wrigley
On a rainy night in Chicago, the Cubs’ play mirrored the miserable weather as Kwang Hyun Kim and the Cardinals dominated en route to a 6-0 shutout. Kim stifled the Cubs for six innings, giving up only five hits while striking out seven and walking just one. He handed over to the bullpen and it was more of the same as the Cubs struggled to scratch anything together, notching five singles, two walks, and a lone double from Nico Hoerner in the 8th.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (7/2/21): Reds 2, Cubs 1- Mills Solid, Offensive Woes Continue
The Cubs got a solid start from Alec Mills, but the offense couldn’t do much once again. The Cubs lost a rare low-scoring game at Great American Ball Park to the Reds 2-1. When Jason Heyward doubled to score Kris Bryant in the 4th, it seemed as though the Cubs might only need that one run. Alec Mills was cruising along through five innings until he walked Jonathan India. After giving up a hit back through the middle to old pal Nicholas Castellanos in the bottom of the 6th, Mills was pulled.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/27/21): Dodgers 7, Cubs 1 - Alzolay Shelled as Offense Continues to Sputter
The Cubs ended their four-game set in Los Angeles on a sour note as they were blown out by a score of 7-1. It wasn’t just the finale on Sunday night, the Cubs ended up losing the final three games of the series after a promising Game 1 win at Chavez Ravine. No one would blame Cubs fans for turning off the ol’ tube during the finale after an Adbert Alzolay implosion in the 2nd inning, especially if they were watching (and listening) on ESPN.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/26/21): Dodgers 3, Cubs 2 - Bellinger Walks Off Bullpen Battle
Cody Bellinger didn’t start the game for the Dodgers, but he certainly did finish it as his walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th inning gave the home team a 3-2 win over the Cubs on Saturday night in Los Angeles. Some nincompoop might say the bullpen faltered again and lost the game, but the offense produced only two runs while the pen worked 4.2 scoreless before Keegan Thompson gave up the longball.
Could Chicago Cubs deal for Max Scherzer, Kyle Schwarber or Joe Ross?
(Photo by Mark Brown/Getty Images) The Chicago Cubs are going to need some help if they going to stay in the hunt and ultimately win the NL Central. Everyone and their mother knows that, at the very least, the starting rotation could use a serious injection of quality and consistency. Beyond that, the club getting healthy could certainly cure a few ills, but another bat wouldn’t hurt given the offensive struggles, of late.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/25/21): Dodgers 6, Cubs 2 - Bullpen Falters, Offense Packs Little Punch
The Dodgers made what was a very tight pitcher’s duel into a foregone conclusion with four runs in the 8th inning against the Cubs bullpen en route to a 6-2 win at Chavez Ravine. It was bound to happen with how good the relief corps been all year, but a 2-2 game at Dodger Stadium was a rough time for an implosion to take place.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/24/21): Cubs 4, Dodgers 0 - Cubs Combine for Historic No-No in L.A.
On Thursday night, the Cubs did something they’ve never done before in the history of their franchise by throwing a combined no-hitter against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, winning 4-0. Zach Davies started the no-no party off by going six innings and working into and out of trouble early on. Despite five walks, Davies was, quite obviously, tough to hit and relied on that changeup to keep the Dodgers off-balance.
Chicago Cubs: Could Patrick Wisdom actually be the real deal?
(Photo by Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images) While the home run barrage has slowed down considerably since his first week and a half, Patrick Wisdom continues to make it difficult to keep him out of the Chicago Cubs lineup. playing well in all facets of the game since being called up on May 25. In the past month, Wisdom has slashed a pretty crazy .284/.343/.716, but obviously his numbers have come down a bit since his blistering start.
Chicago Cubs could certainly use Kyle Schwarber right now
WASHINGTON, DC - JUNE 13: Kyle Schwarber #12 of the Washington Nationals follows his three run home run in the second inning against the San Francisco Giants at Nationals Park on June 13, 2021 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images) It’s not nice to kick a team while it’s (sorta) down, but boy, oh boy could the Chicago Cubs use the offensive services of Kyle Schwarber right now.
Cubs @ Mets Series Preview (June 14-17): TV and Game Info, Starting Pitchers, Insights
The Chicago Cubs continue to be fun, hot, and thriving in spite of myriad injuries. They’ll head to New York to play four weeknight games against a team that’s had just as much of an issue with injuries this season, the Metropolitans. The blue and orange guys will be looking for some payback after being swept at Wrigley in late April, especially given the best pitcher in baseball is scheduled to pitch Wednesday.
Chicago Cubs: Sergio Alcantara has made Eric Sogard irrelevant
(Photo by David Banks/Getty Images) David Ross and the Chicago Cubs are adding insult to injury Sunday night with the inclusion of Eric Sogard in the starting lineup over Sergio Alcantara (although he’s now been inserted at shortstop with Javier Baez a late scratch), but in the eyes of just about everyone else watching the games, talking about the games, and scouting the games, it would appear Sogard’s time in Chicago is about at an end.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/12/21): Cubs 7, Cardinals 2 - Hendricks Deals, Offense Bombs Away
In front of 39,095 paid fans at Wrigley Field, the Cubs dispatched the Cardinals in fine fashion for a second straight day. The home team fell behind early before winning Saturday night’s tilt 7-2. Cardinals starter John Gant had worked out of trouble all year despite walking a ton of guys and owning peripherals that say he should be much worse than he has been. That sorta caught up to him tonight, as he got behind Cubs’ hitters and then either walked them or gave up tanks.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/8/21): Cubs 7, Padres 1 - Rizzo, Wisdom Provide Power as Davies Keeps Friars at Bay
The Cubs evened the series in San Diego with a nice bounceback performance that featured good starting pitching, plenty of power at the plate, and solid bullpen work en route to a 7-1 win. Zach Davies was exactly what the Cubs needed in this one, going six shutout innings while only allowing one hit against his former mates. Davies used his repertoire to keep the Padres off-balance after some hard contact early, needing only four strikeouts to dominate the powerful lineup.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/7/21): Padres 9, Cubs 4 - Alzolay Scuffles as Friars Offense Explodes
The Chicago Cubs rolled into San Diego for a three game set on the heels of dropping three of four in San Francisco and proceeded to drop yet another on this West Coast trip, losing 9-4 to the Padres. If you had told David Ross that Cubs pitching would hold Fernando Tatis Jr. to an 0-for-5 night, he probably would have liked his chances.
Chicago Cubs: Team’s stretch of good luck may be at its end
(Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images) Despite all the success in May, when the Chicago Cubs overcame what seemed like an injury on a near-daily basis over a two-week span, it looks like things are leveling off – and not in a good way, either.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/5/21): Giants 4, Cubs 3 - Fake Rally Can’t Overcome Gausman
Despite an early home run that provided a 2-0 Cubs lead for the second straight night, the offense was otherwise anemic against Kevin Gausman as the Giants won for the third night in a row. Patrick Wisdom provided the early blow as he continues his incendiary ways at the plate, putting the Cubs in the top of the 2nd with a bomb to straightaway center. Alas, that would be the only real fireworks the Cubs would shoot off all night, as Gausman continued his dominance this season.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (6/4/21): Giants 8, Cubs 5- Arrieta Struggles as Giants Play Home Run Derby
Kris Bryant launched his 13th home run of the year to stake the Cubs to an early 2-0 lead. The Giants jumped all over Jake Arrieta and took a second straight ballgame from the Cubs in San Francisco. After Willson Contreras singled to start the ballgame, Bryant immediately put the Cubs on top with his bomb to left, and the omens seemed good. When Arrieta got a double play ball in the bottom half of the inning, it seemed to be even more auspicious for the Cubs.
2021 Chicago Cubs possess a magical je ne sais quoi reminiscent of “Major League”
(Photo by Joe Sargent/Getty Images) Use your ← → (arrows) to browse Jobu, from the movie Major League (Photo by Robert Laberge/Getty Images) If you’ve ever seen the movie Major League, you know how easily comedy can explode at the confluence of opportunity, talent and doubt. The truly comic irony, however, is that pieces of that movie seem to be intersecting with pieces of whatever reality is going on with the Chicago Cubs in 2021.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/29/21): Cubs 10, Reds 2 - Magic Continues For Cubs in Blowout Win
The Chicago Cubs are on a roll and the magic continued today behind a solid effort from Zach Davies, who gave up just one run through five innings. The Cubs got on the board in the 2nd inning when Willson Contreras scored on a single by Eric Sogard. Davies then helped his own cause and laid down a safety-squeeze that turned into a single and RBI on a play that should have resulted in an out but instead was a gift from the Reds defense. Rex Brothers came on in the 6th after a Davies walk.
Chicago Cubs Score and Recap (5/23/21): Cubs 2, Cardinals 1 - Báez Provides Fireworks in Extras as Cubs Take Series from Cards
Other than a terrible strike zone and a David Ross ejection, there wasn’t much to write home about in this game for the Cubs until extra innings. Thankfully, they outlasted the Cards in what had been a scoreless affair through nine and Javier Báez provided just enough offense for the Cubs in the 10th as he obliterated a hanging slider from Alex Reyes to give the Cubs a 2-1 win in St. Louis.
