TRIGGER WARNING: THIS POST DISCUSSES SUICIDE This article was written shortly after the brother’s death in 2018. We have brushed this issue under the carpet for so long, our brooms are tattered, and the carpet is now redundant. My fingers feel laboured writing these sentences, because I cannot fully fathom it—yet in other ways, unfortunately, I can. In 2018, a French national named Azzouz Boutobba died due to suicide in the month of Ramadan.
I am grateful to Allah (SWT) who gives us every opportunity to call upon Him in times of abundance and scarcity. He loves us more when we call on Him for His help, mercy and protection. We will always be in need from the One who is never in need. Can you imagine the number of people who call Him, day in day out, during the twilight of the dawn and in the darkness of the night? They forsake their beds to contemplate, reflect and meditate.
During the blessed month of Ramadan, we usually spend our time worshipping Allah through reading the Quran, increasing our voluntary salah such as Taraweeh or Tahajjud and giving more in charity. Subhan’ Allah we have been given the power of du’a, to ask Allah for what we want; and what better month to utilise this opportunity than the month of Ramadan to do this?
