Life Without You
Q: My husband, Chaim, passed away about 15 months ago after a short illness. We were married 52 years at the time. Chaim was my partner. We built our home, raised our family, went through all of life together. Now — and I feel terrible to say this, but it’s the truth — without him, my life feels pointless. I know it makes no sense. I have children and grandchildren, work, friends, extended family, community and more — I’m not an isolated, lonely old woman.
Perilous Poaching
Yanky printed out the monthly aging report for the third time that week, hoping the numbers had magically shifted. They hadn’t. Tens of thousands of dollars in uncollected revenue remained stalled in accounts receivable, a creeping financial bleed that directly battered Summit’s bottom line. This is getting out of hand, he thought to himself.
Out of His League
Nachum: The team’s win came at my son’s expense. Yumi: Teamwork means keeping your eye on the goal. Nachum It was Chavie’s idea to sign Benny up for a team in the local basketball league. I wouldn’t have thought of it myself — he’d never shown particular interest in basketball — but I agreed it was a good idea. A lot of his classmates were part of the league, and he seemed excited to try it, which was definitely encouraging.
Spice Is Nice - Mishpacha
Lives: Lakewood Cooking for: two adults, three kids aged three and under Time we eat: kids at four thrity or five. Adults at seven My cooking philosophy: I am a quick cook because I have to be. I come home from work at around three forty-five with my kids, and I need to prepare their supper while keeping an eye on them. After that, I do supper, bath, and bedtime for my three little boys, then I have from six thirty to seven to make an adult supper.
Lech Lecha: 5787
“Behold, I now know that you are a beautiful woman.” (Bereishis 12:11) The Torah is telling us that Sarah Imeinu was a beautiful woman. Similarly, we find that the Gemara (Megillah 15a) states that there were four beautiful women in the world, and Sarah was one of them. The Torah also states that Rivkah and Rochel were beautiful. One might wonder why the Torah is giving importance to something so superficial. As it says in Mishlei (31:30), “Grace is false and beauty is worthless.” So why praise it?
Reach for the Peak
Embedded in Matan Torah itself is the Torah’s attraction to the humblest of mountains. Torah is most comfortable there — it shines brightest through these untainted prisms of the truly selfless. Rav Yisroel Meir Kagan, rosh yeshivah of Yeshivah Toras Chaim of Denver, slipped away from This World last Monday, 8 Cheshvan, at 93 years old. Only those closest to him heard the crashing thunder of his passing. For most others, it was a whisper. He was that humble. He was that great.
A Yiddishe Ponim
A desperate mother, three frightened children, and a prayer for salvation in the middle of Arkansas. But what began as a family’s miraculous rescue would lead, more than a century later, to a very different kind of search — because not every great story has a neat ending The year is 1908, and Chaya Freida Cooperman is standing on a street corner in Little Rock, Arkansas. She doesn’t have a penny in her pocket and she doesn’t know a word of English.
The Peddlers - Mishpacha
Most of us are familiar with the truism that the bottom of New York Harbor is covered with tefillin thrown overboard at Ellis Island. And it’s true that many immigrants arrived looking forward to rejecting the old world and embracing the new — and that included their religious observance. Yet my family history paints a different picture. Both sets of my grandparents were prewar immigrants and my father a”h grew up in the old neighborhood of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
You Can Tell a Man by the Forgiveness He Seeks
The forgiveness I seek indicates how I view my wrongdoing. Let me give you an example. My wife asks me to pick up some ice cream for her when I go to the store. I forget and come home empty-handed. I say, “I’m sorry.” What I mean is, “I had no malicious intent, I just forgot. I don’t feel a need to ask for forgiveness.
Congregation Ariel: Remember Kindness to Start Sweet Year
Memories. They are my narrative. They also express the psyche I have crafted for myself. Some memories I have chosen to forget. Others I have chosen to remember, and I have chosen how I remember them. They are, after all, my memories. They are the source of my fears and my motivations. I love to share certain memories, and others I hide in a deep, dark place inside me. Know my memories, and you know me. Does G-d also have memories?
