Vaccination accident. advice
2 The fact that she poked herself and then went ahead and put the same needle into your body is a MASSIVE violation. I would be much angrier than you appear to be. I recommend discussing this with a lawyer. Given the discussion of percentage threats, has she been tested for HIV? Are they going to get back to you with results? She should be given a slate of tests for any and all possible blood-borne disease and the results shared with you. This is outrageous.
Getting a Watch Repaired
July 22, 2026, 3:19am 1 When my aunt said she was going to send me my uncle’s watch, I had no idea she was sending me something potentially worth thousands of dollars. It’s a 1979 Heuer Monnin 844 diving watch. It was the first diving watch the company produced, this early version was made in France before moving production to Switzerland, and if it’s real it could be worth a few thousand dollars. I’ve never owned a watch I cared much about getting repaired.
Things ya gotta 'splain in the MMP
April 27, 2026, 6:01am 1 Well, you don’t hafta explain to US cuz we’re all smart ‘n’ stuff. But then there’s the rest of the world. “There’s no such thing as a stupid question.” Narrator: Ummm … I spent more than a few minutes at work earlier tonight listening to TWO people explaining to a 19? 20? year old what a radish is. He claimed he’d never seen one, had zero concept of their existence. I believe they show up at this thing called a “grocery store” but here we are.
What is this shower for?
3 I’d want to see what’s immediately outside. If it’s a beach home maybe people wash the sand off their feet, and the dog too. But I suspect washing the dog’s (or dogs’) feet is probably the main focus. Other similar places I’ve seen in home reno tv shows have had a more enclosed place, so the dirt and water won’t splash around so much, but I’ve never had a dog so I don’t know.
Good place to get generic bulk Dayquil WITHOUT Nyquil?
February 10, 2026, 10:16pm 1 Is there a good place to get a multi-symptom cold medicine, like Dayquil, but without the drowsy nighttime version that’s usually bundled with it, and preferably as a caplet instead of a gel? e.g. Walmart has Robot or human?, but it’s out of stock for shipping, with only 1 left locally. Target has https://www.target.com/p/daytime-cold-38-flu-relief-softgels-24ct-up-38-up-8482/-/A-11003529#lnk=sametab, but it seems pretty expensive for a 24 ct.
Vintage Christmas lights
December 18, 2025, 7:45pm 1 Like a lot of people, I’ve developed a deep need for classic Christmas lights – I mean indoor ones, for the tree. These are fairly big bulbs, called C7.
I'm surprised Trump doesn't have a bowl game named after him
December 18, 2025, 3:03am 1 One of the small southern bowl games must need a sponsor.
Medicare: Advantage vs. Medigap
5 Bottom line: Medicare Advantage (Part C formally) is lower quality budget oriented care suitable for folks who’ll never ever get very sick before dropping dead one day. But the big thing is its the budget plan for folks who can’t afford better. It’s the equivalent of an employer-provided rock bottom cheap PPO plan.
The Florentine diamond wasn't lost after all
November 7, 2025, 1:26am 1 The Habsburgs just kept it hidden for 100 years… The Globe and Mail – 6 Nov 25 The Habsburg family heirloom survived the fall of Austro-Hungarian Empire Quote: Its 137 carats, intricately cut, passed through the hands of one European dynasty after another – the Medicis, the Habsburgs – before disappearing in the fog of two world wars. The mystery of its whereabouts inspired rumours, fiction, even a high-priced perfume. Now, the mystery has been solved.
Synthetic opioid carfentanil
13 If micrograms can kill a human, then milligrams could kill an elephant. So it’s a decent bet the serum being loaded into animal tranquilizer darts isn’t 100% active ingredient. But for damn sure the entire charge, being sized to knock out an elephant quickly, albeit temporarily, would knock out a human both quickly and permanently. Decent bet if a human did receive an appropriate therapeutic dose of carfentanyl it’d work about like fentanyl does with similar objective and subjective effects.
Omaha restaurants?
October 11, 2025, 1:51pm 1 A friend and I are going to Omaha next week to visit the Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. We are both complete animal nerds and this was a “wouldn’t it be fun …” conversation that just grew legs — I’m so excited about it! It’s 5 hr drive for her and 5 hrs of plane travel for me. We also want to eat fun new things, and Omaha looks to have a pretty good variety of restaurants. Does anyone know the city and have any recommendations?
What was the nicest and most civil era of U.S. politics?
October 2, 2025, 11:50pm 1 Being a Millennial, I’m probably one of the youngest Dopers here. From as early as I could follow American politics, it was nasty. The Lewinsky scandal, Gingrich era, George W. Bush, Obama - all pretty venomous eras. Then Trump came along and it was triple-nasty. Were the 1980s better? I know the 1960s-1970s were tumultuous. The 1950s had McCarthyism. Was World War II the only recent united time? The Civil War and Reconstruction, of course, weren’t nice times.

Looking for input on Super Automatic Espresso Machines
October 1, 2025, 12:34pm 1 I am considering getting a fancy new coffee maker that has loads of bells and whistles and I would love to get some input. Super Automatic Espresso Machines will grind the beans, fresh, and brew the coffee (or espresso) within a couple of minutes. Examples include the Jura E8 and the DeLonghi Eletta Explore. There is a Jura E6, and it makes coffee and espresso - that’s it. Other models can steam/ foam milk on the side and a couple can make latte or cappuccino directly.
Any Doper Jeweler/ artisans in the house?
So. The Marketplace seems very much geared towards selling not buying. Mods, if this is not appropriate please do direct me accordingly ? I’ve got an idea for a silver bracelet that will be the band for an Art Deco era watch. I have several silver bracelets that could be melted down. If there’s a Doper out there who does silversmithing and would like to talk, I’d like to know it ! Many thanks, Cartooniverse @Sticks_and_Scones does some jewelry work with silver.
How will this meeting with lawyer go? (wills and car titles)
July 29, 2025, 2:54pm 1 Please help me anticipate how a meeting with our lawyer is going to go. My spouse and I are both having wills drawn up. She is especially worried because her brother in law recently died without a will, leaving big messes for her sister to deal with. One of the problems was that he owned several expensive things, and her name wasn’t on any of the deeds or titles.
Senior Dopers - do you feel like valued elders? Old and in the way? Something else?
July 23, 2025, 12:26pm 1 To those of you “of a certain age” - let’s say over 60. In general, how do you feel you are viewed by those around you: family, neighbors, co-workers, whomever? And younger folk - how do you view older folk? Me, I feel mostly invisible. I don’t consider myself some brilliant resource to be sought out, but I do have SOME life experience which I’d be happy to share. Hell, I’ve made plenty of mistakes tht I’d be happy to help younger folk avoid. ;).
Water spots be us, our new MMP
Last week you all said we should, so here it is. Carry on.
Have you used a CPAP device?
June 10, 2025, 7:21pm 1 My wife says I snore. Perhaps I do, I’m asleep at the time. But I don’t think I have any issues with sleep apnea. At least, it’s never been a problem serious enough to consult a doctor. So: are these things really medically necessary, or are they a fad or a fake?
So... how are men supposed to look for "business casual" shirts?
June 10, 2025, 4:11pm 1 It’s a bit embarrassing to ask this… but, uh, how do I shop for everyday shirts that aren’t just t-shirts? (I don’t know all the different clothing vocabulary, sorry, maybe “business casual”?) As a working-class millennial, I feel like this is one of those things that I was just never really taught or picked up on my own.
Advice on how to deal with long-lost friend who has "transitioned"
Years ago, in my last year of high school, in a new, for me, school, I was befriended by a guy who sat next to me in home room. It was literally in the first five minutes of my first day, when he turned around and introduced himself to some new guy, and asked if he wanted to go to an upcoming party. We became great friends for the next couple of years, until I ghosted him for whatever BS, autism-inspired reason (though I was not diagnosed until 50 years later).
Which do you like with chili: Crackers, cornbread, or tortillas?
April 11, 2025, 4:27pm 1 Mr. brown and I were debating this the last time I served chili. He loves slightly sweet cornbread best of all, but I like the contrast of crunchy saltines with my chili. Cracker bonus: you can use them as a scoop for the chili topped with molten cheese. But I also love toasted corn tortillas with chili. The savory corn flavor complements the red chili wonderfully. What say you?
What was your most feared/hated lesson in school, and why?
April 2, 2025, 1:57pm 1 I don’t know why I’m thinking about this now, but I am. I absolutely hated German lessons. I had, rather foolishly, done well in a French exam when I was 12, which put me in the top stream, which was terrible for me because I was desperately shy and hated speaking up, and modern language learning demands that you do so. Plus it meant I was with the brainiest people in my year who all seemed fluent. Then it got worse.
What’s For Drinks Tonight: Episode 2025 - The Empire Strikes Back
March 15, 2025, 10:06pm 1 Continuing the discussion from What's For Dinner Tonight: Episode 2021 – A New Hope: Per the lolz of @needscoffee (the founder of the parent thread) and the request of @BippityBoppityBoo, here’s the What’s for Dinner Tonight companion thread! To all our honored drinkers, booze enthusiasts, wine snobs, and people who just like to get your drink on, here’s why you ca regale us all with this evenings fine beverages. Or less than fine, or just plain weird.
Canadopers: What should be on my emergency grocery list tonight?
10 My three most important essentials, in priority order, are: Vodka Caesar mix Bacardi Gold rum The first comes from Sweden, the second is a domestic product. The third comes from Puerto Rico, which may be at risk if Puerto Rico is technically considered part of the USA. If so, however, I’ll just switch to authentic Havana Club rum – not the Bacardi imitation sold in the US under that name, but the real Cuban stuff, because we don’t have an idiotic embargo on Cuba.

The value of the things
January 12, 2025, 5:44pm 1 My MIL died recently – she was 93, nearly blind, and mostly sad, having lost her husband of 74 years 2 years earlier. Much of the time in her last weeks was spent sorting her things – jewelry, old kitchen items, clothing, knick-knacks, and such. And the big round Shaw rug – she kept telling me how much they paid for it and how good a rug it is, but it’s not to my taste or my daughter’s.
“ Oh shit! I see Monday!” - Spot‘s new MMP (told you I liked it)
I can’t tell if I did this new MMP at the crack o’ Monday dark in the am right. About all I can say is I tried, I really did. I’m not even home yet. Stayed late at my daughter’s house because they have streaming covering football and so I could watch my beloved Huskers win yesterday’s game and become bowl eligible. And rewind and watch the best parts over and over again. Whilst folding basket after basket of clean laundry while the dirtiers of said laundry snooze upstairs all snug in their beds.
Dog Illness - Opinions Needed
November 22, 2024, 4:53pm 1 So, the other tech I work with has a dog that is 6 months old. The dog has had its shots and whatever other services are routinely done for dogs by vets. The dog was a normal pup, energetic, happy, playful, etc. Suddenly, about a week ago, the dog began throwing up after meals. The dog is still basically energetic and “normal” except for the fact it pukes up its meals.
Company Towns {spun off of "A thread for Rudy Giuliani"}
7 And the pseudo-currency is “Company Scrip” en.wikipedia.org Company scrip is scrip (a substitute for government-issued legal tender or currency) issued by a company to pay its employees. It can only be exchanged in company stores owned by the employers. In the United Kingdom, such truck systems have long been formally outlawed under the Truck Acts. In the United States, payment in scrip became illegal in 1938 as part of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Hot toddy after long wait to vote!
November 14, 2024, 1:40am 1 Today was municipal and school board elections in Sask, and I just came back from the longest voting line I’ve ever been in! Roughly an hour and a half, start to finish. Voting was in a school and the line curved around the block, and then a big snake line in the lobby of the school, with the school doors propped open by the number of people coming and going. Got in some nice chats with people in line, saw some of my neighbours and friends.
Situation before Roe v. Wade; is it worse now?
November 3, 2024, 10:25pm 1 Beck before Roe v. Wade, abortion was illegal in many except to save the life of the mother. But now even that exception is dubious because doctors are afraid that a zealous prosecutor could argue that the mother’s life was not really in danger and women have died because of it. Or been near death. Or had to be airlifted to another state. Does anyone know what the situation was before Roe v. Wade?
Does The Department Of Motor Vehicles Deserve Its Terrible Reputation?
October 19, 2024, 4:44pm 1 Disclaimer- I have never had a driver’s license. My only dealings with the DMV involve obtaining, renewing, and changing the address on a state issued non-driver ID. The state was supposed to send me a voter registration card with my new address. It never arrived. The polling place usually does not ask to see ID or a voter registration card. But, given the importance of voting and the great importance of the upcoming Presidential election I want to be on the safe side.
Medicare Part D (Drug coverage)
September 27, 2024, 8:16pm 1 Mrs. Martian is preparing to move onto Medicare in December. She has signed up for Parts A and B, and is going to sign up for Medigap Plan G through UHC/AARP. That leaves what to do about Part D - drug coverage. The Medicare.gov section for comparing Part D plans is really slow and buggy.
Is there an app for this?
September 24, 2024, 5:24pm 1 Sometimes I put my phone down somewhere and then forget where it is. If somebody else is around, I can ask them to call my number and then locate my phone by the ringing. This doesn’t work when I’m by myself. I have to resort to finding my phone by the old-fashioned process of looking for it. It occurred to me that there might be a technological substitute.
Is rawdogging it bad for you?
September 1, 2024, 8:11pm 1 Some “health experts” are claiming that sitting doing nothing for a few hours is bad for your health, but it doesn’t seem that outrageous a practice to me. Some people simply call that “meditating”, or “Saturday”. Forbes 'Rawdogging' a flight was the unexpected travel trend that emerged this summer. Distraction-free flying can be good for mindfulness, health experts have some concerns. What? What else did you think I was asking about?
My Sister-In-Law Tracy-Not looking good at all
August 18, 2024, 4:14pm 1 Late last night we got word that my SIL is in a very bad way, with multiple shut downs and a major heart attack. Another Sister-in-law Edie picked up My Beloved here in Portland very early this morning and they rushed to Spokane where other relatives are waiting. A couple minutes ago I got word that Tracy had a second major heart attack and they will try to keep her alive until Edie (the eldest sister) gets there. Hope, pray, wish etc. Whatever you’ve got I’ll take.
What is the geometry of prism eyeglass prescriptions? And why are they so expensive?
August 10, 2024, 3:46pm 1 I do not have a prism prescription, but I’m trying to understand my own prescription for astigmatism and ran across this term. The sites I’ve been able to find talk about what type of vision defects are corrected by them but not what that really means. How can a prism lens correct double vision? Also I’ve heard that prism correction can drive up the cost of lenses dramatically.
If you get sick on vacation (cold/flu/COVID) is it ok to fly home or should you hunker down in a hotel room till you are better?
July 28, 2024, 4:48pm 1 I have a friend who recently went on vacation. Within a day after arriving she got sick (cold/flu). She decided to come home. I can certainly understand wanting to be back home and not paying a couple hundred dollars a day to sleep and be miserable. But, I can’t help but think about the poor people she will come across as she makes her way home (flying and taxis and mass transit even a ferry boat). What is the right thing to do? What would you do?
Prison sentence of hard labor--what do they do?
July 26, 2024, 8:25pm 1 I just read about a guy sentenced to 60 days of “hard labor” in an Alabama jail. What does that mean? A quick google only turned up info about prison labor in general, (which is typical factory work, or working in a laundry, etc). But the phrase “hard labor” sounds old-fashioned chain gangs breaking rocks. Does this still exist? What will this NFL football player be doing while he is in jail?
Obituary Listings- Where?
June 19, 2024, 8:23pm 1 I left my hometown of San Diego 20 years ago. I like to keep abreast of Obituary listings, because reasons. The only comprehensive notices have always been the San Diego Union, which charges outrageous prices for the privilege of posting a death notice. When my mother died six years ago the cost for adding one photo to her eight line obit was well over a thousand dollars.
Question for Romance Fans
June 10, 2024, 1:26pm 1 I have a question for all two of you, I suspect. I’m writing a romance novel (an action thriller) and I’m kind of stuck trying to figure out where to put the sex. I prefer slow burn stories where it takes some time to warm up and intimacy is a gradual process. But my sex scenes are explicit. I don’t want to put too many in the book because in my experience it drags down the story. So any sex I do include needs a story based reason. Right now I’m at the midpoint of the book.
Getting Organised in the MMP
June 10, 2024, 9:15am 1 Morning, mumpers! It’s currently 11c/53f with a predicted high of 14c/58f, and mostly cloudy. Weather app must have heard about nellie’s new neighbours as it says “Cloudy with a slight chance for a fucking stampede of drunken elephants.
Waiting for an Update in the MMP
Morning, mumpers! Its currently 15c/58f with a predicted high of 18c/64f and cloudy. Weather app says “It’s the perfect weather to fucking clean your house. If you have a llama, it’s also a good day to brush your fucking llama.” No llamas here, and no time for cleaning either! Today at midday is the deadline for students to submit applications for extenuating circumstances (means they get a first go at their assessments in August instead of a second one) so there’s a flood of those in our inboxes.
Anybody here know about canes?
May 27, 2024, 11:13pm 1 (Of course someone does. Someone here knows everything) A dear friend has developed a hip condition that has her using a cane to walk, and she’s depressed about the whole thing. It may not be a permanent thing, but maybe. Right now she’s using a medical supply center cane, your basic utilitarian cane that looks like an aluminum tube with a rubber cap and the handle is a plain curve made of some dull gray plastic. IOW, pretty ugly.
Tell me how airplane movie watching works - headphone related
May 10, 2024, 8:22pm 1 My gym Bluetooth headphones bit the dust so I need to buy a new pair. Add to that, I’m traveling to Europe this year (from America) and want to make sure the pair I buy will be compatible with the airplanes system. Problem is, I know nothing about how planes and movie watching work. Do you have to plug them into the planes system? Or are they Bluetooth ?
It's a surprise birthday party for you! What cake would you be happiest and least happy to find waiting on the table?
11 Best: chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. I’d be disappointed if the cake had whipped cream frosting instead of cream cheese or shortening frosting, but I’d eat it. Also perfectly acceptable, vanilla wedding cake. I like how dense wedding cake is, presumably to hold up under its own weight. Worst: German chocolate cake- I really hate coconut. Almost as bad: carrot cake. We’re talking cake here damnit, no vegetables! A zucchini cake I would pick up and throw at you.
So...I've been showing my kids SDMB posts and threads. I'm found out but they don't care
April 3, 2024, 7:04pm 1 I’m so lost(sorry @solost , this is actually a tribute to you). They actually look bored and ho-hum. The Lil’wrekker said “and you think I didn’t know and you talking about me was news, How?” She just astounds me with her dismissal of my humorous threads about her. Her and her magnificence and how highly I think of her. Son-of-a-wreks best comment was “damn, I’m funny” Ivy said I needed to shut up alittle. I told her, yeah that’s an opinion I’ve heard before.
Brits -- especially sewing people -- ever heard of jacinet (a fabric or interfacing)? (possibly not correct spelling)
1 I specify Brits because it was a Brit who brought it to my attention, but of course anyone who recognizes what this is please respond. This Brit was teaching a workshop in book binding. We used it instead of mull for stabilizing the book spine, and I found I prefer it, but I can’t seem to find it by that name. He’s the one who spelled it out that way.
Getting burnt-on crud off a old teflon pan
1 The easiest move is to buy a new Teflon pan–this one is very old, and I’ve been meaning to replace it for a while. But I’ll invariably burn some crud on the new one, so I’d like to solicit opinions on anything beyond “Just keep throwing them out.”
