Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

TV critic

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I started out using an old manual typewriter. It made me feel like an old school journalist.

How is social media changing news?

Everything is available right now. Faster, better, brighter and in a way that anyone can contribute an opinion.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Telling every side of a story. Truthfully.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email. I turn off my phone to avoid useless PR pitches.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Photoshop, imovie, camera, phone, Facebook

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook. My users are a little older. I'm trying super hard to use Snapchat more.

Why did you become a journalist?

Everyone has a story. I want to help them tell it.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A story I wrote about a little pig. I planned to eat it, but vegans rescued it. So I bought another pig. And ate it.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Unless you want to do this more than anything in the world, get another job.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime. As long as its email.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

There are too many to count. Mostly ones that show no insight into what I actually do.

What's your favorite drink?

Diet Pepsi.
