Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
From my post-grad program at Harvard/Radcliffe, I was hired to help launch a publication in consumer electronics. Associate Editor.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. Saved my 1913 Smith Corona for years until I discovered it was the iPad of its day and only worth $4 even 100 years later.
How is social media changing news?
Not enough room to answer. Take that, Twitter!
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Faith, hope and charity. Faith you'll get the story right. Hope that you'll keep getting hired. Charity to colleagues.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By email with open-ended suggestions.
What's your favorite social network?
LinkedIn
Who do you wish followed you?
Bill Gates.
Why did you become a journalist?
I grew up in the country and books and magazines were my link to the world. "New journalism" caught my attention.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, but I started my own in college--and put the official newspaper out of business.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Write. Write. Write. And always tell the story.
