Furrow Irrigation Rice Yield Variations
If you ask experienced furrow irrigated rice producers one thing is clear, they recognize only a small, if any, yield reduction.
Fertilizing Crops with Poultry Litter
Poultry litter has been used to produce Mississippi crops for decades. However, most often it has fertilized hay and forage crops grown near the production facilities. The increased volatility of inorganic fertilizer prices circa 2008 led to more interest and use in row crops over the past decade. Mississippi ranks among the top five states in both numbers of broiler chickens grown and quantity of meat produced.

The Versatility of Furrow Irrigated Rice
Bill O’Neal of Allendale Planting Company in Shelby is well versed in adaptation to get the job done. Allendale is one of the farms on the riverside that for “Delta standards” most would call rolling or hilly. Two years ago, O’Neal was given the opportunity to purchase an adjacent property that was rolling and being irrigated by center pivot. With furrow irrigation for row crops of corn, soybeans and cotton in mind, O’Neal worked with his surveyor to precision landform the property.

Furrow Irrigated Rice On Farm Studies
Last week we started our conversation concerning Furrow Irrigated rice (row rice), this week we look at the on farm studies. “On farm” research trials attempt to look at the real world. “On farm” trials evaluate real world data, uncontrollable and sometimes un-explainable, but hopefully with enough time and locations, the data gives producers a glimpse of what they can expect on their farm.
Researching Row Rice
Nitrogen management was also investigated using the different rice cultivars and irrigation treatments. The results suggest that when nitrogen is applied utilizing a three way spilt of 50/25/25, highest yields were achieved. The other treatments; 100% pre flood, two thirds/one third split, and 25%/25%/25%/25% all resulted in the similar yield. All fertilizer (NBPT treated) applications were applied to wet soils with the exception of the initial pre flood treatments.
MSU research sheds light on row-rice yields
• By Bobby Golden and Dan Roach • Producing rice in a “rowed-up” manner as other row crops such as corn, soybean and cotton, was a foreign concept just a couple of years ago. Row rice or furrow-irrigated rice was initially investigated by Mississippi State University researchers as an alternative to conventional flooded rice production in the 1980s. Some of you may recall Drs. Joe Street and Ted Miller worked with Clarksdale’s Leon Bramlett to explore the agronomics of furrow-irrigated rice.
