Phone Injustice: Profiting from Families of the Incarcerated
During my 30 years in Congress, I have dedicated my time to improving the lives of vulnerable people. Before I return home from Washington, I am determined to pass the Martha Wright Prison Phone Justice Act, which will end predatory prison and jail call rates. Right now, families of incarcerated people are forced to pay prohibitively expensive fees to stay connected through simple phone calls. It is inhumane and immoral.

I AINT STUDDIN YA by Bobby Rush Herb Powell Read by Leon Nixon Bobby Rush
The ribald 87-year-old blues legend Bobby Rush reads the introduction to his thoughtful memoir, while Leon Nixon narrates the balance of the production. The result is an easy-to-hear and authentic-sounding account of how a gutsy 12-year-old Louisiana guitar player rose from poverty to develop a stage act in Black clubs on the so-called Chitlin Circuit and become a big-city name in blues and pop music.

In 'I Ain't Studdin' Ya,' Blues Legend Bobby Rush Reflects On Over 7 Decades Of Making Music
American blues musician Bobby Rush took inspiration for the name of his memoir — “I Ain’t Studdin’ Ya” — after one of his hundreds of song titles. The Grammy-winning musician shares stories about his life dating all the way back to the Jim Crow era. Rush has written over 400 songs and won his first Grammy at 83 years old for his album “Porcupine Meat.” In the book, one of his earliest memories he recounts is when he created a guitar from a broom with a wire in his mother’s house.
Little Walter’s Song That Changed Everything For the Blues
In 1957 my first child with Hazel was born, Valerie. Hazel, I, and the baby moved from my brother Alvin’s home to the 1100 block of Troy Street on Chicago’s West Side. Little did I know, on the next block over, on Albany Avenue, lived Little Walter. Our back doors were catty-corner to each other. I learned harp from Daddy and then from listening to Sonny Boy Williamson. But that learnin’ was elementary school and high school. Hangin’ with Little Walter was college.
Iconic Blues Musician Bobby Rush Remembers His Rocky Relationship With James Brown
In 1957, I was making $7.50 a night at a joint called Walton’s Corner. That was top dollar for me. Walton’s Corner had a gigantic neon sign in the shape of a T, with “Walton’s” in the top of the T and “Corner” in the stem of the T. With showplace written at the bottom, it was impressive-looking for the neighborhood it was in. That bright sign stuck out like a church steeple. It was one of the better blues spots around. In the fall, I invited Sonny Thompson over to my show. He loved it.

S. Side Target customers looking for economic justice, respect
When Target made public its callous decision to close its stores in Chatham and Morgan Park, many residents of Chicago’s South Side were shocked and angered. After all, they were loyal Target customers who spent their hard-earned money in these stores, conveniently located in their communities. Their anger grew into action and as their congressman and resident of the South Side, I joined them as they demanded Target Corp. keep the stores open and work on a turnaround plan.

How the House voted to pass the GOP health-care bill
On Thursday, House Republicans successfully voted to unwind major parts of the Affordable Care Act. But they barely got it through their own chamber: After having to pull a version of this bill in March for lack of support from both conservative and moderate Republicans, it passed by a margin of four votes. All 193 Democrats opposed the bill, alongside 20 Republicans — primarily moderates who thought the legislation rolls back health-care benefits too much.
Steinberg: But who WANTS Oprah as president? Or Trump in Chicago?
I’m reading all this speculation about Oprah Winfrey maybe being interested in running for president. Conversation seems to revolve around her views. Is she sincere? Is it a joke? And the logic seems to be, heck, experience doesn’t count for anything, obviously, since Donald Trump was elected president. So why not Oprah? She’s a big rich star too! Those people are missing the point, entirely. Yes, Trump won.

Should NCAA Athletes Be Paid?
This weekend, the Final Four of both the Women's and Men's NCAA basketball tournaments will garner the collective attention of sports fans across the country. Brackets will be busted, nets will be cut down, and two champions will ultimately be crowned. But while those teams are celebrating a national title, the real winners of the tournaments may be their corporate sponsors, broadcasters and ultimately, the NCAA itself.
