Associations between women’s childhood maltreatment and thyroid function before and during pregnancy
Abstract Maternal childhood maltreatment has been associated with complications during pregnancy and neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring. Thyroid dysfunction could be a mechanistic pathway underlying this relationship. The thyroid is vital for reproductive health in women, maintaining menstrual cycles, fertility, and pregnancy. However, little is known how childhood maltreatment affects thyroid function in women contemplating pregnancy and those who are pregnant.
Synthesizing scientific literature with retrieval-augmented language models

9 hours ago After a year of headlines claiming AI would replace millions of jobs, companies are quietly discovering something else instead. AI isn’t eliminating human work. It’s redistributing human judgment, away from routine tasks and into the narrow zones where ambiguity is high, mistakes are costly, and …

Synthesizing scientific literature with retrieval-augmented language models - Nature
|
Abstract Scientific progress depends on the ability of researchers to synthesize the growing body of literature. Can large language models (LLMs) assist scientists in this task? Here we introduce OpenScholar, a specialized retrieval-augmented language model (LM)1 that answers scientific queries by identifying relevant passages from 45 million open-access papers and synthesizing citation-backed responses.

Pre‐pregnancy BMI, rate of gestational weight gain, and preterm birth among US Pacific Islander individuals
Objective The objective of this study was to examine the association between rate of gestational weight gain (GWG) and preterm birth (PTB) classified by pre-pregnancy BMI among Pacific Islander individuals in the United States. Methods Pacific Islander mothers (n = 55,975) and singleton infants (22–41 gestational weeks) without congenital anomalies were included using data from the National Center for Health Statistics (2014–2018).
Birth-Based vs Fetuses-at-Risk Approaches for Assessing Neonatal Mortality Rate by Race
Birth-Based vs Fetuses-at-Risk Approaches for Assessing Neonatal Mortality Rate by Race Preterm birth (PTB; live birth at <37 gestational weeks) is among the leading causes of neonatal death (NND; <28 days of life).1 Racial disparities in PTB outcomes can be contradictory when estimating neonatal mortality rate (NMR) stratified by gestational age (GA) at birth,2 with a lower NMR among Black vs White preterm-born neonates, which is inconsistent with the NMR in the Black population being almost...
Memorializing Wartime Emigration from Japan to China: Local Narratives and State Power in Two Countries
As the most devastating conflict between China and Japan, the Second Sino-Japanese War became an integral part of national histories in both countries during the postwar period.
