Art fund offers £2 million in grants to help UK museums and galleries
Museums and galleries are facing uncertain futures due to months of closures, long-term cancellations, and new hygiene regulations. Art Fund, the London-based charitable organisation, will now offer £2 million in grants in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which will help this industry recover after lockdown. “The future of our museums and galleries, which are so vital to society, is far from certain,” announced Jenny Waldman, the director of Art Fund.
Old Master discovered in elderly woman’s kitchen worth £5.3 million
A long-lost Medieval masterpiece has been discovered hanging above an elderly woman’s kitchen stove in northern France. When it goes up for auction in October, the painting is estimated to fetch around €6 million (£5.3 million). “It was considered special by the family, but they thought it was an icon,” explained Philomene Wolf, the auctioneer who found the artwork during a house clearance in Compiegne this summer.
St Fagans in Wales wins Museum of the Year award
St Fagans National Museum of History has been awarded the prestigious title of Art Fund museum of the year 2019. On Wednesday, the Cardiff museum was praised for its “exceptional imagination, innovation and achievement”. The title also comes with a £100,000 prize, which is the biggest single art prize in Britain.

Doge’s Palace livid over fake Modigliani show
Amedeo Modigliani enthusiasts are astounded by the revelation that an exhibition of the Italian artist’s work contained 20 fake paintings. The major showcase at the Doge’s Palace in Genoa was shut three days early in July 2017 after suspicions were raised over the authenticity of the works on display. Prior to closing, tens of thousands of visitors visited the exhibition to view the iconic expressionist works thought to be worth tens of millions of pounds.
French court to decide who owns Pissarro’s pea pickers
The lawyer for an American couple defending a restitution claim for a Camille Pissarro painting has said they should not have to “pay for the crimes of Vichy”. On Tuesday (10 October 2017) a hearing began in Paris to determine whether or not Bruce and Robbi Toll are the rightful owners of ‘La Cueillette des Pois’ (‘Picking Peas’). The 1887 gouache originally belonged to French Jewish owner, Simon Bauer.
