Favoritism is often a problem in schools. Students can feel mistreated or downgraded when they are treated differently or see other students treated differently by their teacher. Elkin High School freshman Noe Torriente said he has witnessed favoritism in school. “Yes, teachers’ kids don’t get in as much trouble.” Torriente believes students are treated differently based on who their parents may be.
The transition of moving from a middle-school student to a high-school student is a pretty big deal, and preparation is necessary. Many freshmen students report feeling overwhelmed in the first semester of high school. In middle school, teachers expect students to start taking responsibility for their actions, and in high school, teachers expect students to take full responsibility for their actions.
Cafeteria conditions remain among the biggest problems students would like to be improved. Among the greatest complaints this year is the lack of free ketchup. A new policy this year was to give students two free packets of ketchup with their meal, but students must pay five cents per extra packets above those first two. Elkin High School student Cortland Sturdivant describes the lack of ketchup as “unacceptable” and says he regularly complains about the situation.
