“Francine” by Booth Tarkington
Weekly Newsletter The best of The Saturday Evening Post in your inbox! Though scarcely studied or read by present-day literati, Booth Tarkington’s novels, short stories, and plays were wildly successful during his lifetime — from the turn of the century through the 1940s — and he remains one of only four authors to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction twice. His famous novels The Magnificent Ambersons and Alice Adams are both set in the Midwest, the former in his hometown of Indianapolis.
SEVENTEEN by Booth Tarkington Read by Stacy Gonzalez
Stacy Gonzalez superbly re-creates life in an unnamed Midwestern town just before WWI. At the center are 17-year-old William "Willie" Baxter and his bratty, ever-present kid sister, Jane. Their tranquil summer changes when baby-talking, impressively portrayed Lola Pratt and her doglet, Flopit, arrive for a prolonged visit. Gonzalez is an excellent storyteller as Willie and his buddies go "wild" over Lola. She also skillfully demonstrates the language patterns, family life, and propriety of the day.
“Things” by Sinclair Lewis
Weekly Newsletter The best of The Saturday Evening Post in your inbox! Editor George Horace Lorimer accepted Sinclair Lewis’s short story “Nature, Inc.” from The Saturday Evening Post’s “slush pile” of manuscripts in 1915 and began a prolific relationship between the satirical author and the magazine. Lewis’s novel Babbitt (1922) brought this kinship to a screeching halt due to its critique of business and the middle class.
“The Anthology of Another Town” by E.W. Howe
Weekly Newsletter The best of The Saturday Evening Post in your inbox! Journalist and novelist E.W. Howe wrote about the small towns of middle America in his fiction as well as his magazine E.W. Howe’s Monthly. A known difficult father and all-around grump, Howe’s writing never gained wide acclaim despite having stamps of approval from Mark Twain and H.L. Mencken (Twain wrote back to Howe after reading one of his manuscripts, “you may have caught the only fish there was in your pond”).
Alice Adams | David Frum
ALICE ADAMS By Booth Tarkington Booth Tarkington: now there is a name with which to terrify a young writer! Tarkington dominated American letters in the first third of the 20th century. His novels headed the newly invented bestseller lists. He won the Pulitzer Prize for literature twice in four years, 1919 and 1922. His books were brought to Broadway and made into movies. And now? Now Tarkington is forgotten, dismissed, dusted. Even his biography seems out of print.
Get the Word of the Day - joyance | Dictionary.com
Origin of joyance 1580-1590 Joyance “gladness, rejoicing,” a compound of the verb joy “to feel glad, rejoice” and the suffix -ance, used to form nouns from verbs, was coined by Edmund Spenser (c1552-99) in his Faerie Queene (1590). Ben Jonson (c1573-1637) and Samuel Johnson (1709-84) were not great fans of Edmund Spenser’s contrived, artificial diction, and joyance may be one of the reasons why.

Henry James’s 1904 Sordid Little Sex Farce
If you are able to withstand the near complete absence of plot, the involuted (and convoluted) sentences, and the preposterous metaphors (“she sat there in the solid chamber of her helplessness as in a bath of benevolence artfully prepared for her”)—if you’re able, in other words, to withstand Henry James, you’ll find that The Golden Bowl is a sordid little sex farce. James demands more than the usual suspension of disbelief, but his premise is original and wicked.

Booth Tarkington’s ‘Freedom of Speech’
In 1943, the Post commissioned four writers to craft an essay to accompany each of Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms paintings, which had quickly come to represent America’s moral imperative during World War II. You can read the other three essays here. In a small chalet on the mountain road from Verona to Innsbruck, two furtive tourists sat, pretending not to study each other.
Get the Word of the Day - myrmidon | Dictionary.com
Origin of myrmidon Myrmidon (Greek Myrmid?n) in Greek myth was the son of Zeus and Eurymedusa, whom Zeus seduced disguised as an ant. Her son was called Myrmidon (by an ancient, false etymology from mýrm?x, the ancient Greek word for “ant”) and was regarded as the ancestor of the Myrmidons, a tribe in Thessaly whose warriors followed Achilles to Troy.
