Editor’s Note: The following is the English-language translation of an op-ed by Boris Nemtsov, originally published on Sept. 1, 2014 in the Kyiv Post. Before investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, (both 27) were killed, there’d been no immediate sign that someone was targeting them. Slovak police records, however, show that the assassins had been preparing the hit for at least two weeks.

The Right Way to Sanction Russia
On Thursday, the U.S. Senate will hold a hearing to discuss the accession of Russia to the World Trade Organization and the repeal of the Jackson-Vanik amendment that impedes American trade relations with Russia. The Obama administration has portrayed it as little more than overdue Cold War housekeeping while touting the imagined economic benefits for American farmers that could result from freer trade with Russia. But the reality on the ground in today's authoritarian Russia is far more complex.

Putin Must Be the Luckiest Person on Earth With just eight months remaining before the presidential election, we can sum up the results of President Vladimir Putin's term in office.
No more Western hugs for Russia's rulers
This year started quite symbolically in Russia. In the last days of 2010, government authorities decided to demonstrate their power and their intolerance for being challenged: The verdict issued at the farcical trial of Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev had no relation to jurisprudence; leading opposition figures were detained for as many as 15 days on purely political grounds.
Russia's Best Bet
Vladimir Putin has seamlessly replaced Boris Yeltsin as leader of Russia, moving quickly to take advantage of his high approval ratings and his party's bolstered support in parliament. This is quite an accomplishment for a government that lacked a popular mandate only a month ago. Yet many in the United States have expressed doubts about Russia's new acting president.
Boris Nemtsov: Why does Putin wage war with Ukraine?
At first glance, and from the point of view of a sane person, the war between Russia and Ukraine is some sort of a nightmare, a madness that only brings grief, conflicts and problems to all. Half a year ago this scenario seemed unreal. It seems that it would take an enemy of both Russia and Ukraine to make enemies out of two peoples with centuries of common history. However, current events indicate that the most nightmarish, the most bloody scenario of fratricidal war is already developing.
