In November, two priests at Pushkar, site of a Brahma temple, said that Rahul Gandhi belonged to the Dattatreya ‘gotra’. So, his lineage can be ‘traced back’ to that mythical sage who may or may not have been an incarnation of Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva. BJP, which pretends to have a monopoly on Hinduism, wasn’t amused. It said Gandhi’s gotra was ‘Itlus’. For the perplexed, Itlus was supposed to stand for Italy, where Rahul’s mother was born. Pity BJP’s wags.
