Ken Norton Vs Rocky Marciano -Who Wins And How Does It Unfold?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Fergy, . Taking both in their prime's and 15 rounds? Please judge both at their respective peak's rather comparing their records alone. I think this is the archetypal Marciano fight. Kenny starts well, times Rocky coming in and wins rounds 1-6 clearly although ships the odd crunching body shot, an investment in the future for Rocky.
Ali’s disdain for the body
Just curious as to any opinions on this. I understand that if something isn’t broke there’s no need to fix it. Also, you can’t just insert an additional weapon/stylistic accent to a fighter’s armoury without considering its potential to upset the fine balance and effectiveness of the whole. Also, some accents/weapons simply can’t optimally co-exist together.
Chris Byrd Vs. Jimmy Young
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by ikrasevic, . No one wins it would be a draw in a very dull affair. Stevie G, mr. magoo and ikrasevic like this. It’s really anyone’s decision to get. Probably a very close fight and difficult to judge. Whoever stays busier will likely win ikrasevic and Stevie G like this. Boxed Ears and ikrasevic like this. Jimmy was much better than Byrd during his short 5 year peak. And was better for like...8?

Michael Moorer - how weight drained was he?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by dmt, . At 175 lbs, how weight drained was MM? I have heard he was was weight draining 25 lbs or so. I'm under the same impression you are about that. In an all time ranking of 1-5… where does lewis’s fight vs Mavrovic rank as his hardest?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by CooperKupp, . I’d say around 3 personally. Behind Vitali as #1 and mercer at #2. This content is protected And that lead left hook at the beginning there… Wladimir threw that same shot faster and way harder I still think that shot would’ve been lights out for lewis had those two fought but that’s a different conversation for another day. Well Lewis did lose twice as well..... Then there is also Holyfield 2.
Who is the greatest heavyweight still around who professionally boxed in the 60's?

What's keeping Dariusz Michalczewski from being in the IBHOF?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Flo_Raiden, . I've always wondered why Dariusz Michalczewski has yet to be considered for an induction to the International Boxing Hall of Fame given his impressive 23 title defenses as well as victories over Vergil Hill, Montell Griffin, Graciano Rocchigianni, Drake Thadzi, Richard Hall.
Who would you rather see? Pac vs Gervonta or pac vs Stevensen
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by DobyZhee, . Sounds like they are negotiations… Vs Davis. I'd love to see him get knocked the **** out. Davis. He's already shown himself to be shameless and unambitious so fighting a 1000 year old Pac wouldn't be anything new for him. Shakur is coming off his career best win, is P4P ranked and there are like plenty of better real fights he could make from 135-147. Fighting Pac would be a disappointing waste of time.

Gracious boxers
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by GoldenHulk, . Just watched Tua vs Oquendo- " I would like to thank Mr. Oquendo, he was a great champion, I would like to say hello to his family in Puerto Rico" Yes, Oquendo was truly a great champion. I like this quote for the thread: "People ask me who the most gracious boxer I ever faced was, on a personal level, and I have to say it was Roberto Duran." ~Sugar Ray Leonard III El'Ice and Andre2000 like this.
Funerals
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Fitz56, . Here's an off-the-grid thought: Max Schmeling (Sinatra also kicked in) paid for Joe Louis's funeral (and served as a pallbearer coming all the way from Germany at age 76). Foreman begged off Frazier's funeral because it "would be too emotionally overwhelming" but reportedly offered to help with expenses, yet apparently Mayweather picked up the the whole tab.
Prime Nonito Donaire vs Prime Naoya Inoue (poll added) edit: at Bantamweight
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Devon, . Naoya Donaire from 10 or so years ago vs Inoue from today, and was today’s fight more Inoue’s improvement or Donaire’s decline? Because from the opening few minutes, Donaire still looked light on his feet and fast hands, has Inoue improved his IQ and timing? Who wins this matchup? Both occuring matches were false. Naoya's injury in the first fight gave a false impression - Donaire's age gave a false impression in the second fight.
Winky Wright(prime) vs. Vernon Forrest(prime). Who wins?
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by dudemcdudeson, . It's ashame this fight never went down. It could have been a classic I would have loved to see this one. I'd favor Forrest by a little bit. Good fight. Vernon would win in my opinion. His jab was equally as good or better than Wrights but he threw a more wide array of power shots. Vernon comfortable UD. I like Wright in this one, it is a great fight though.

Prime Sonny liston vs prime tony tucker?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by DR. FEELGOOD, . Liston is definitely greater, but i always thought stylistically tucker would be a tough matchup for liston, because tuckers style was similar to ali's style. What do you guys think? This is one of those H2H's where you don't pick against the great fighter, because he's the great fighter, and it makes the thread seem pointless, even though you also get the logic of why it was proposed, minus the rose tint on your glasses.
Rex Layne v Chris Arreola?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by mcvey, . Twelve rounds, who takes it? Arreola was a bigger, more skilled, stronger Layne. He KO's Rex in 6-8 rounds. mcvey, Pat M and USFBulls727 like this. Layne has trouble with really physically fit fighters like Marciano and Arreola. Guys who really put everything into being as fit as a person possibly can be. Boxed Ears said: ↑ Layne has trouble with really physically fit fighters like Marciano and Arreola.
Apart From A Few Exceptions No Heavies Pre 1960 Beat Todays Men
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by mcvey, . Who are your best Southpaw Counterpunchers?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Seamus, . If you were to coach a southpaw, who would you pick out for him to study for solid counterpunching basics from the southpaw stance? Recent guys. Whitaker, Martinez, JCG, Nunn, Moreno, Payakaroon, Nazarov, Sanders, Byrd, Bute, Chagaev. Some of them are more aggressive like Nazarov, Sanders, Bute and aren't always doing it off the back foot like Nunn but they're very good counter punchers too.
The best white boxer of all time
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by ikrasevic, . We get that the best boxer of all time is Ray Sugar Robinson, but the best white boxer… that's easy. Benny Leonard. Honorable mention Tommy Loughran Depends what you mean by "best". Harry Greb has the greatest record. I think it's underestimated what Fitz did as far as being the top of that lot.
Rate Floyd Patterson's chin
It depends. For his size, as a light heavyweight, he showed no weaknesses taking punches from notable hitters such as Archie Moore and Yvon Durelle. As a heavyweight he was suspectible to being floored in the early rounds and even being put away by big punchers such as Sonny Liston and Ingemar Johansson. To his credit he did last against the likes of Oscar Bonavena, George Chuvalo, Jimmy Ellis, Jerry Quarry and Eddie Machen later in his career.
Wilfred Benitez vs. James Toney
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by KOTF, . Benitez pre-Hearns (before he lost his 154 lb. title) moves up six pounds to challenge the Toney of the McCallum I fight. How does this fight play out? It is hard to match them up since Benitez fought well up to 154 and fought almost his best at 154, but at 160 that weight proved to be his limit and he did not fight well at 160. Toney fought well starting at 160 and up to heavyweight. Hard to compare them.

Worse Opponent For Joe Frazier ?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Fergy, . David Tua or Razor Ruddock? Which fighter would Pose the most danger for a prime Joe Frazier? Mods, delete this thread! Of the two offered, I think Tua is worse for Frazier. Tua might be marginally more problematic but Joe cold-cocks both of them jarama, Fergy and MaccaveliMacc like this. I just checked and the mods have not even deleted the first thread I asked them to delete. And that was seventeen years ago.

Prime James Tony vs Joe Calzaghe? MW
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Greb & Papke 707, . p4p Pryor or Arguello?
Although we can say Pryor owned Arguello, we must remember that Arguello was actually the smaller man, considerably past his prime, and had moved up one time too many. Pryor was looked at almost as a joke but I noticed that KO mag had actually favored him in their first matchup. I myself gave Pryor a good chance since he had to be the naturally bigger man.
Just Bought The Book " Four Kings" By George Kimball
It’s a fantastic book. Read it cover to cover years ago and ever since, every few months I pick it up and thumb through to a random section and reread (and relive) another great chapter in boxing history. The author was there to witness it all. He primarily covered Marvin for one of the Boston papers (I think it was Herald rather than Globe but maybe I got that backwards) but also covered the rest.
Just Bought The Book " Four Kings" By Spencer Kimball
Yeah it's pretty great overall. I like to view it as an unofficial mini Hagler biography for his sections. In fact it was thanks to this book that I developed my love for Hagler, as I initially thought him the least interesting of the 4 kings and hadn't looked into his non fab 4 fights. His story really made me give him another chance and he's either my favourite or 2nd favourite of the group now.
Inoue is 34 and failed to KO his last 3 opponents will he be washed against Bam like Canelo was ?
Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by MarkusFlorez99, . Bam is looking to fight Inoue in 2027 but Inoue will be in his mid 30s by then and he might be washed by next year similar to Canelo when he fought Crawford. Inoue failed to KO his recent opponents just like Canelo in the run up to the Crawford fight and Canelo was also in his mid 30s i think History might repeat itself Inoue should probably duck bam and move up to 126 quickly Inoue has no power. None.

Usyk had an off night
Finally got round to watching the bout... So what? What a fighter he is still. Didn't think i'd get to see him have an off night but he did. He's still a sex symbol only matched by Fury himself. It's us fickle boxing fans who put fighters on pedestals to make them more than human with unrealistic expectations. A false perception of a fighter beyond the raw cold truth, the truth that everyone is human and If it bleeds we can kill it.
Stop making fun of Tony Galento
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by InMemoryofJakeLamotta, . People laugh at Galento but what's there to laugh at? Has Usyk slipped?
Did Usyk slip this bad since Dubois 2, or was he unmotivated? Is it really possible he lost all of his speed and timing in 10 months? 0 footwork, lateral movement, jabs or feints. I've seen him talking about becoming an actor or coach and what not... Add in to all of this he's also firing a lot of his former coaches and team members. He's also spending a lot of time mentoring AJ, and they seem to share the same new (poor?) coach.

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Yorbals, . This fella is pretty much forgotten about already. He had an impressive run up until he took on more than he could handle with Spence.
