Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Features for The Southampton Press.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

My grandmother's Royal from the time I was eight until six months ago when I finally stored the aging beast in a safe place.

How is social media changing news?

It takes active, willful ignorance to stay uninformed today and social media plays a huge role in keeping transparency at the fore.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Hunter S. Thompson. No one could capture the surreal and force it up against the painfully real the way he did.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

It was up there: #MormonMafia

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Since I'm often on the road, via email. Direct details, connect the dots for me, show me why it matters.

Why did you become a journalist?

Typical to most journalists, it started with fierce curiosity. Walking around asking "why?" all the time can lead to reporting if you let it.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time, day or night.

What's your favorite drink?

Bulleit Rye, neat.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Driving around Northern Virginia and fighting D.C. traffic as I chase down the next story. And if not, check any clean body of salt water.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That all D.C. news is fake news and theater. There are great authentic stories happening all the time here.
