Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Ghostwriting press releases for large financial firms.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

My friend let me use an electric IBM typewriter and I spent the whole cartridge writing verses for my friends.

How is social media changing news?

Adding integrity and free flow of vital information through citizen journalism. Anyone can easily participate outside the corporate motive.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

J. Jonah Jameson

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A person who writes for newspapers, magazines, or news websites or prepares news to be broadcast.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I don't really use Twitter or follow hashtags.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I usually get very specific pitches, but I also enjoy being given a general topic and the freedom to create my own headlines.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Mostly Gmail and docs. Sometimes specialized cybersecurity tools, market analysis tools, and always a standard web browser.

What's your favorite social network?

The social network of real community.

Who do you wish followed you?

No one really. Have the courage to follow your own path.

Why did you become a journalist?

To earn an honest living and escape from a difficult situation.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but this seems like a good way to encourage new writers.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Mostly technical material that provides useful educational value.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Professional experience is the key to success. Also be kind to your editors.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time of day, I work with companies all over the globe. Send what you want to send at any time of the day.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Coolest job I've had was to teach hacking tools and tactics to DoD trainees. Made me feel proud to be an American and to help my nation.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Anything I've declined that violates my personal code of ethics.

What's your favorite drink?

Sweet iced tea.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Enjoying the company of my loved ones. Practicing and performing music. Making delicious food. Working with local activists. Out in nature.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

None in particular. Preference for publications that maintain integrity towards the public through reader funding.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

There is an incentive behind every word you read. It's usually profit, and financial news is very transparent about this. Some are less.
