The Evolution of Automotive Design: Why Form Still Follows Function
The automotive industry stands as one of the most compelling examples of how engineering necessity shapes aesthetic evolution. From the horseless carriages of the 1890s to today’s aerodynamically sculpted electric vehicles, car design has consistently demonstrated that form follows function, a principle that remains as relevant today as it was when architect Louis Sullivan first coined the phrase in 1896.

Navigating Race, Privilege and Opportunity
On May 31st, 2023, I woke up overwhelmed by feelings of self-doubt. I was up early for a flight to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to meet with fellow aspiring Black leaders in venture capital through a not for profit organization called HBCUvc. Its mission is to build pipelines into VC for individuals with non-traditional backgrounds. The trip was meant to be an orientation before each of us fellows went off to our respective venture capital firms for a summer internship.
5 Ways to Build Community Engagement in Schools
It’s pretty difficult to understate the importance of community involvement in schools. At KIPP, when we talk about “Family and community engagement in school,” we’re talking about schools, families, and other stakeholders in the community sharing knowledge and information with each other. The purpose of that kind of engagement is straightforward: We want to make decisions that improve outcomes for students.
Investing In The Underbanked: An Opportunity At The Intersection Of Fintech And Proptech
By Brandon Best Underbanked consumers represent a massive and misunderstood segment of the US consumer market. These individuals tend to be disproportionately younger, poorer, and persons of color. They have distinct attitudes and motivations that have not been catered to by the traditional banking system. Decreased trust in financial institutions, tightening lending standards, and rising interest rates will push this segment further away from the traditional banking environment.

Happiness, Thy Name is National School Choice Week
January 21, 2020 School Choice Week showcases the interest in school choice and pent-up demand for more of it. Whether supply meets that demand will depend in part on decisions in the political and legal realms. The 10th annual National School Choice Week (NSCW) will kick off January 26 with some 25,000 schools participating in a mind-boggling 51,300 independently organized events encompassing all 50 states.
Regulations are Bringing Back Dirt, Filth, and Disease
January 21, 2020 Trump is exactly right that problems trace to preposterous government regulations designed to save water that actually end up using more, and not dealing with the real problem which has nothing to do with domestic water use. The more Donald Trump does these extemporaneous speeches at rallies, the better he gets at perfecting their sheer entertainment value. He has a comedic sense of timing. He connects with people like a great entertainer.

Power to the Parents!
January 21, 2020 The abusive education monopoly must go. Having retired as a teacher over ten years ago, I often look back on some of the great educators that I worked with during my 28-year career, and how lucky their students were to have them. I also think about the stinkers I encountered, and how sad it is that my students’ parents were essentially powerless to do anything about them.
Texas Takes Control of Houston Public Schools

States Struggle to Control Legal Marijuana Markets
January 16, 2020 Legal marijuana continues to compete with its black-market cousin because of the time needed to establish a legitimate marketplace and the taxes on legal marijuana. Legalized marijuana was supposed to provide a windfall of new tax revenue for states that took the plunge, but instead states have struggled to reach expected revenue targets and create a regulatory framework that allows licensed sellers to access the banking system.

Decline in Phonics Has Led to Downfall of Public Education
December 1, 2017 American education has been failing for more 100 years – ever since we abandoned teaching reading with phonics. In 1955, Rudolph Flesch wrote a simple book, Why Johnny Can’t Read, in which he pointed out that education was failing simply because we were no longer teaching reading by using phonics. It seems no one was listening.

Carrying for the Kids
November 13, 2019 An analysis of school shootings by the U.S. Secret Service doesn’t really tell us anything new. A report released last week by the U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center on “targeted school violence” doesn’t add much to what we already knew. Nearly every attacker “experienced negative home life factors.” Most were victims of bullying and had a history of school disciplinary actions.

News - HuffPost Atttempts to Smear Heartland Again
We understand HuffPost may be writing an article based on a disgruntled former employee’s false allegations that The Heartland Institute has tolerated sexual harassment in the past. The accusation is completely false. Heartland always has had policies and procedures in place to ensure a professional and safe environment for its employees. Heartland’s policies allow us to remove problem employees quickly – and certainly faster than HuffPost.
