The Best Gastropubs in Canberra
Where are the best gastropubs in Canberra? Photo: Bentspoke Brewing Co. Ever dreamed of a relaxing drink with more than a just house parma to satisfy the appetite? Well, you are not alone. Surfacing in London in the early 1990’s the first gastropubs pushed boundaries by fusing a pub and restaurant in one. Fast forward thirty odd years and you will find gastropubs residing in New York to New Delhi and everywhere in between.
Take 3: Belconnen Fresh Food Market
Sophia Brady 4 November 2020 4 November 2020 Tasty treasures at the wall of preserved goods at Deli Cravings. Photo: Emma Bickley. Belconnen Fresh Food Market is a Canberra institution. No matter what side of the lake you live on, who hasn’t stopped in to pick up everything from your weekly grocery haul to a Christmas ham and that hard to find deli ingredient that your cookbook insists you need to complete the new recipe you are trying?
Multicultural Eats: the Ambassador's guide to Croatian food in Canberra

For me, one of the best parts about international travel is the food. Taking time to discover new flavours and dishes trumps all the well-meaning hop-on, hop-off bus tours. Boarding a flight and arriving in a new land is not possible right now, but the joy of unearthing great cuisines right here at home is.
Hot in the city: Dumpling Social's an addictive addition to Bradley St in Woden

A brand new colourful and hip dumpling joint has opened in the heart of the Bradley Street foodie precinct at Westfield Woden. It joins Fenway Public House, The Bavarian, San Churro and Sushi Musa on the ground floor of the multi-storey car park that was transformed last year into Southsides’ own little eat-street.
Take 3: Woodfired Pizza is all about the base
I am quite a pizza fan and have done the rounds (once or twice) of a lot of Canberra’s woodfired pizza establishments. Everything from enjoying it delivered to my door in a brown box to the high-end slick service of hatted restaurants. Biting into a slice of woodfired pizza has been the antidote to many a long day. Cooked at temperatures of 400 degrees or more, as Meghan Trainor would say, it is all about the bass(e). I like it best when it is charred on the bottom while remaining chewy on top.
On Lake Cafe, Canberra’s only lakeside cafe: come for the coffee, stay for the loukoumades
On Lake Cafe’s deck with views across Lake Burley Griffin. Photos: Michelle Taylor. The grass is damp underfoot as John begins unfolding tables and setting chairs out, readying for the day ahead at On Lake Cafe. The crisp spring morning dawns cautiously after yesterday’s battering of storms and gloom. Then the sun peeks out through the clouds and John declares: “Sunshine means people will be out walking.
First Look: Propaganda Bistro where love rules
Retro decor and a delicious Vietnamese Iced Coffee are a feature at Propaganda Bistro. Photo: Sophia Brady. As I turn the corner into Gartside Street, Wanniassa, I am met by a mini traffic jam. Going at 7:00 pm, there is a stream of cars looking for parking just as I am. The whole area is bustling. There are people coming in and out of the many restaurants dotted along the street and a huge queue of frozen custard lovers has formed outside popular teenage haunt, Goodberry’s.
First Look: Short Eats Sri Lankan Food Van

I am thrilled when I spot the shining blue beacon that is the Short Eats Sri Lankan Food Van atop the car park at Westfield Belconnen. Living on the Southside of Canberra and being a creature of habit, I rarely venture to that side of town for shopping and when I do, I always park in the same underground spot.
The art of antipasto at Tutto Delicatessen
A little slice of Italy in the heart of Mawson. Photos: Supplied. If you are after a little slice of Italy in Canberra, you will find it in Mawson. Between the service station and dentist on Mawson Place, just look for the constant stream of people coming in and out the doors and a crowd sitting around the outdoor tables of Tutto Delicatessen.
Dickson: Canberra’s ultimate foodie destination

Photo: Sophia Brady Flanked by busy Northbourne, Limestone and Majura Avenue, Dickson has always been a bustling hub. As one of Canberra’s earliest suburbs, it has also long held the reputation of having an exciting multicultural dining precinct.

Crepe Stop: Canberra’s pancake scene just got batter! | The RiotACT
Michael makes an M&M version of his Candy Bar crepe. Photos: Michelle Taylor. Crepe-lovers of Canberra, get excited! A new café dedicated to churning out crepe perfection has landed! Not all crepes are created equal, and before opening the Crepe Stop in May, owners Michael and Amany wanted to ensure that their crepes were going to be first-class. This led to a great Australian crepe crawl, a journey that inspired and galvanised their dream.
KorBQ brings a smoke and char experience where everyone gets a chance to grill
Gleaming foil-covered slinkies dangle from the ceiling like science fiction film props. Photos: Michelle Taylor. How would you like a dinner out where there is so much interaction no one even thinks to pull out a device? KorBQ in Belconnen is that restaurant. “We’re a family-friendly place; we have something for everybody. The kids love the crispy chicken and everyone gets to take part in frying the food,” owner Jocelyn says. Belconnen is her second KorBQ restaurant in Canberra.

The oven working its magic. Photos: Tim Bean Photography. With Canberraâs warm spring evenings stretching out longer now that daylight savings has kicked in, alfresco dining is back. Sweep the cobwebs off the BBQ and stock up on bags of ice to keep drinks cold. It is a fabulous time of year.
