Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first writing job was for a hair and beauty blog, Mayvenn. I contributed original pieces to the blog for two years!

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. My mom brought me a typewriter after I saw 'Harriet the Spy.'

How is social media changing news?

Social media has curated the craving for quick news and video, making it difficult for longer-form editorial features to gain traction.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Moesha Mitchell

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be a journalist is to be a seeker of truth and integrity.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I love the latest Netflix documentary trend!

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Pro, iMovie, Slack, Asana, Google Docs, WordPress, Prism, and social media outlets.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram

Who do you wish followed you?

Oprah Winfrey!

Why did you become a journalist?

I've always had a passion for storytelling and have been dedicated to finding out the "why." I am also proudly nosy!

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, but I contributed several editorial pieces to the annual yearbook :)

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My most prized interview was speaking with Rickey Minor, Whitney Houston's longtime musical director. I am a Whitney Houston fanatic!

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be able to be adaptable and hone skills in all areas of writing, editing, and production.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time!

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Anything travel-related that I can cover a new destination.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I do not like pitches about destinations if it is not an invitation to said destination.

What's your favorite drink?

Arnold Palmer

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Taking a walk and enjoying the nature.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I love legacy publications, such as the Los Angeles Times.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

A lot of people put journalists who've covered entertainment in a box. One beat does not define good storytelling.
