Otter AI (transcripts); micro recorder; Scrivener; Scapple; MS Office.
What's your favorite social network?
Substack
Why did you become a journalist?
To write about a wide variety of topics and to make clear to my audience subjects that can be confusing.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Editor in chief
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Read widely and don't hyperspecialize.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Several tie for this: all were authors with new books offering to review them for my then-employer, TechTarget
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The New Yorker
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That specialization is essential to expertise; my experience in international affairs, baking, travel, and fiction writing feed one another.
