TOWNE/BRANDANO: Legislators Say Open the Machines Before the Midterms and Protect the Voters
More than 45 days of notices to towns, the Ballot Law Commission, and the Secretary of State have gone unanswered. No one has opened a single ballot-counting machine that a town has already bought. The September 17 presentation, the September 23 statewide notice, and the September 28 Attorney General complaints all asked the same thing: show us the machines have no network access. The October 19 hearing produced nothing.
TOWNE/BRANDANO: A Meter Reading, Thirty-Five Days of Silence, and a $3 Million Problem
On 8 September, during the primary, a Nashua Ward 9 moderator held a radio-frequency meter next to an ImageCast voting machine. The meter detects cellular, Wi-Fi, and radio activity. The radio number registered. The electric and magnetic rows stayed at zero, so it was not a motor despite 2 nervous voting machine companies trying to dismiss it in the media as electromagnetic frequency. City and Concord officials were told.
TOWNE/BRANDANO: What’s in Your Moderator’s Closet? Nobody Knows.
Here is the fact that swallows the rest of the argument. No voting machine in any New Hampshire town hall has been examined to see whether it can reach the internet. RSA 656:42, X is not a suggestion. It says no electronic ballot counting device shall have access to or be connected to the Internet. The Ballot Law Commission’s own 2021 standards said the same thing. Approval was supposed to rest on that foundation.
OPINION: The Ballot Law Commission Should Open the Hood
The New Hampshire Ballot Law Commission meets Thursday, September 17, at 1:00 p.m. at the State Archives Building, 9 Ratification Way, Concord. The public should be there. The Commission approves the machines that count our paper ballots. It also hears federal Help America Vote Act complaints. On both jobs, it is flying with incomplete information. In September 2023, the Commission gave two systems a conditional green light for use starting March 1, 2024: VotingWorks and Dominion/Liberty.
